Seriously! Remember my brontosaurus one that I made and fired in the campfire that fooled Banks?

and final FINAL point: Commercial vs Non-Commercial permitting is the issue here. Many youtubers make money off of their videos - so are they considered commercial, and would they therefore still need a permit? How would NPS enforce this? Some clarification by Biden Admin is necessary.

And my final point: in entering the second trump era, where misinformation and flouting of laws and regulations is the norm, and where the funding of the NPS is very at risk, we should definitely be concerned about this.

Further 3/3 This activity will no doubt increase – putting the already financially stressed and understaffed NPS in dire straits when trying to counter the misinformation and when trying to protect the resources from illicit activity and damage.

Further 2/3 Misinformation and pseudoscience spouted through social media often encourages others to “investigate,” which can lead to unauthorised activities and trespass. This can damage both cultural and natural resources, which are often fragile and non-renewable.

Further clarification 1/3: The NPS is not in the business of limiting free speech or moderating content, HOWEVER, with no oversight in permitting this type of non-commercial media at all, the opportunity for misinformation to run rampant is there.

Mini thread (4/4): I am very interested to see how this all plays out. I would assume ethical youtubers will remain ethical, but I don’t hold out much hope for the pseudoscience and pseudoarchaeology youtubers.

Mini thread (3/4): …this will be very confusing to the average visitor – many who will only see Canyon de Chelly as a unit of the NPS that is covered by this new rule, and who don’t even realise there are people living in the park until they visit!

Mini thread (2/4): This makes for a tricky management situation when it comes some Federal legislation. I hope that Navajo Nation regs would still prohibit filming w/i the park, but…

New mini-thread (1/4): And related to this-I used to work at Canyon de Chelly National Monument which is wholly on Navajo Nation land and has Diné people living within the park. NPS is responsible for management of cultural/natural resources, and co-manages visitor experience with Navajo Nation.

3/3 At this point, it will prob be up to individual parks to create park-specific legislation against it, but how that would fare if legally challenged is up in the air.

3/3 I am hoping for some park-specific regs to be established and would hope that most YouTubers would respect if a park prohibits filming for valid reasons (like at Canyon de Chelly to protect residents), but I fear that unethical/pseudo-spouting folks will challenge this. 3/3

…this will be very confusing to the average visitor who only sees Canyon de Chelly as a unit of NPS and doesn’t understand the management situation. None of them really do - a lot of visitors don’t even realise there are people living within the park until they visit!) 2/3

And a foreseeable issue: I worked at Canyon de Chelly. We have Diné residents within the park and the Navajo Nation owns the land while NPS manages the resources (cultural and natural). This makes for a confusing situation for most visitors. (1/3)

While I do see benefit in people sharing their love for the parks, the much-larger downside is that the gate keeping we had to prevent the spread of misinformation and downright pseudoarchaeology/pseudoscience is now gone. 2/3 buckrail.com/biden-signs-...

NASA aficionados know Musk has often worked behind the scenes to lobby government officials in ways that manifestly hurt NASA and benefit his own company SpaceX. SpaceX both partners with and competes with NASA. Putting a 41-year-old with no relevant degrees (or any degrees) at NASA is preposterous.
