Together for a just and lasting peace, together with Ukraine.

In my latest post, I made some concrete recommendations what Europe+ needs to do now to make sure we don’t get steamrolled by the speed at which Trump is destroying everything that is dear to us. Including some thoughts on willingness to defend. In the end, strength is a mindset.

It’s unacceptable that 500 million Europeans have left themselves exposed and dependent on 340 million Americans to protect them from 140 million Russians, who have been unable to win against 40 million Ukrainians in a three-day war that has lasted for three years.

How do we make Europe more secure? Here are five steps we need to take now

Starmer has spoken to both Trump and Macron tonight on the eve of what will be a huge European Leaders Defence Summit tomorrow. The time for words is done. Something big needs to come out of that meeting.

I think what makes this moment feel so big and groundbreaking is that even those among us who have been talking about the need/danger of a Europe without the US for a long time, were usually in the mindset of a US disinterested in Europe. But not a US actively hostile to Europe& European interests.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk responds, something we hopefully see a lot more of that from other European leaders. It's never been clearer than in this moment that Trump is Putin's ally, not Europe's.

Look, obviously my emotional reaction to that press conference is to punch a wall so hard either it or my knuckles break. But let put that on hold for a moment and ask, very dispassionately and calmly: What American national interest objective or foreign policy goal was served by that shit-show?

Starlink should be banned from European markets on national security grounds. Anything requiring Starlink should be shut out of the European market, and sanctions should be considered against all relevant actors. kyivindependent.com/us-threatens...

For young Europeans, the Trump situation can feel hopeless. The feeling of impotence on this continent is strong. But they can correct the mistakes of their parents by embracing European sovereignty. It's not too late. My thoughts on what is needed:

"Betrayed. First Zelensky, and soon us? The radical rejection of the US by its allies" – today's cover of the German Der Spiegel

Plans to boost capacity at St Pancras are welcome. But the hurdles to run trains from London to 🇩🇪, 🇨🇭 and 🇫🇷 beyond Paris are elsewhere, as I explain in this piece for the iPaper inews.co.uk/inews-lifest... #CrossChannelRail

Here's one of the warnings I gave in an article before the US election. It's devastating to see it all happening. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

"Europe's leaders are divided, frightened, weakened by their political quarrels. Many still want to see the US as an ally or at least as a partner. They seek compromise, small arrangements. Without understanding that Trump, like Putin and Xi, want to break their Union because they fear it."

We say it, we mean it. Ukraine's security is Europe's security!

Google warns that hackers tied to Russia are tricking Ukrainian soldiers with fake QR codes for Signal group invites that let spies steal their messages. Signal has pushed out new safeguards.

Europe doesn't need any more wake-up calls. It's awake. It's just very comfortable in its warm bed and procrastinating on getting up in the hopes something turns up to magically take care of all the chores it knows it should be getting on with.

This is why you fight these cowards. The moment you stand up to them, they crumble. Homan has nothing. The Fourth Amendment is clear and I am well within my duties to educate people of their rights. He can threaten me with jail and call names all he wants. He’s got nothing else.

Social democracy is not a viable alternative to capitalism. It is a tempting prospect, but ultimately suffers from violent contradictions that cannot be sustained. 🧵

Real men don’t barricade women and children. Real men don’t threaten and intimidate. Real men don’t preach hate. Real men DO show respect, compassion & love. Real men are comfortable enough in who they are to celebrate the diversity of others. Brian Tamaki you are just a boy.

EU defence industry problems: EU Member States are not procuring European defence products (<50%), too much fragmentation, not enough production capacity, lack of interoperability and need to meet NATO standards…⬇️ A thread 🧵1/8 andriuskubilius.lt/en/european-...

Ok folks, deep breaths. There is very real reason to worry about the dynamic emerging between Washington and Moscow when it comes to Ukraine. But there is also very real reason to believe that Ukraine and Europe can create a better outcome. (A rather long 🧵, obviously) /1

NEW: A moment in Munich. Zelenskyy says Russia is creating 15 new divisions of 150,000 soldiers: "Maybe these soldiers are for Ukraine. Maybe they are for you.” He ends hoping for peace. A long, standing ovation. What a contrast to Vance, met with silence as he torched transatlantic relations.

"Appeasement will always fail" EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas just gave strongest rebuke we've seen of Trump-Putin talks. "It's not good negotiation tactics if you just give away everything before the negotiations have even started" Suggests EU could support 🇺🇦 if it rejects US-brokered deal

The neoliberal dream of fossil fuel billionaire Charles Koch was always the destruction of US democracy and the elimination of government (except for its repressive organs police, courts, prisons, military ofc), and now he has won. What now? A 🧵. 1/ t.co/FKxxmLyfce

Popular or not Dems cannot bend on the need for trans people to be treated with basic humanity and respect. If we give up that because the right made trans people unpopular, we give up everything. They’ll dice us group by group like a salami. We die on this hill or we die alone in a ditch

This will have consequences not just for the US, but for every country which relies on them sharing parts of their intelligence. Which is many countries. To those who still try to keep their head down &hope for the best: Time to recognize events unfolding in the US as the sea change that they are.
