Weedle doesn’t get clean lines. But you get a peek into my process a bit. The whole point of drawing Pokémon is to practice construction. Assembling complex shapes from simple ones. In 3D. I normally don’t draw colored contours like this, I try to imagine them, but here they help the circles.

My first attempt at a full rendering! The upside of being a smooth with defined grooves, and being made of simple shapes that are still interesting to try and define form with. Metapod and Kakuna are definitely still the most boring Pokémon though.

Starter lines are officially in the books. I heard you all like bugs, right? That counts as size content, right? I was borderline on shadow and highlights here. Blastoise is a big round boy. But there are plenty more of those later.

Blastoise has really thrown me for a loop. The right cannon/arm took me a lot of tries and I'm still not entirely thrilled, but it looks good enough. And at least the shell looks like it has some depth! Perspective! Gonna fix up the lines and add color tomorrow.

Take two. After making the eyes bigger (mostly taller, bringing the bottoms down) and squishing the shell/body downward a little, he looks much better. Quick and dirty edits I wish I noticed at the sketch stage, but hey, this is about learning.

For what it’s worth, the Squirtle line is the best designed starters in Gen One. I only use Charizard on my team for Fly, and Blastoise doesn’t get STAB for Blizzard…

Here he is. Even with ink and shading he took less total time than Venusaur. I’m satisfied but not thrilled with the cell shading. Maybe by the end I’ll be fully rendering paintings. I might come back to my six team members at the end, but here’s the first.

Charizard is going to be a little later tonight (hopefully). Despite thinking Charizard's probably the most overrated Gen 1 Pokémon, I want to do good line art and maybe even some shadows and highlights on 'em, since they're part of my Gen 1 team. And yes, Legendaries and Dragonite is cheating.

Charmeleon really is just “Charmander but angry instead of cute.” A lot of the shapes are very similar. Just more pointy. For some reason I had a lot of trouble getting the arms to look decent. And I’m less happy with the flame compared to Charmander.
