Did you know you can get a fantastic Oregon literary magazine in the mail three times a year… for FREE? Mine came in the mail yesterday. Can’t wait to read the Spring issue. oregonhumanities.org/rll/magazine...

BREAKING: Under threat of imminent arrests, organizers have instructed the newly constructed Gaza solidarity encampment at Yale to disperse for the night. They instructed protestors to reconvene tomorrow, when war-criminal Itamar Ben-Gvir will be addressing a Yale society. 🧵

The Bureau of Land Management is no longer being shy about prioritizing logging in Oregon’s forests. I can’t say I ever noticed it using the hashtag #TimberDominance at the end of a press release before.

I wrote about the Sweet Briar College Vixens, and how they are better than the adults in charge lithub.com/lydia-kiesli...

“There is no way to play three-dimensional chess with bigots.” @lydiakiesling.bsky.social will not speak at an anti-trans university.

I went to Salem for breakfast with my grandma this morning; stopped by the Capitol. 100s of people, signs, car horns, and of course the Gold Man, which represents a prior version of US white supremacy and now gets an elevated spot. “Good, start small,” Grandma said of the gathering. Happy 86th, gma.

NMF was founded in 2017, has organizing thousands of Portlanders to submit written and oral testimony against ODOT’s freeway expansions; has been in the NYT and filed over five lawsuits. Monday is the first time NMF has been designated as invited testimony to speak to local or state government

This White House propaganda makes it look like Trump is taking credit for leaking COVID out of a lab. Nice.

OR House Bill 3564 was not on my radar, but it is the only bill so far introduced by a new rep of Lane County, Darin Harbick. It may make journalists easier to sue and was inspired by the Rep's son Tyler Harbick—who would like everyone to know that he was only observing the Jan 6 Capitol attack.

In 49-0 floor vote, the OR House just got a step closer to making it easier to force journalists to issue corrections, doubling time to build a defamation case. Free press champs say the bill, born of a legislator's son's J6 insurrection attendance, may be used to harass journalists. ✍️Tom Henderson

I said my main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that chance. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.

Jackie Llanos, a reporter with our sister outlet @floridaphoenix.com, spent the day tracking the case of an American citizen and Georgia resident wrongly held in a Florida jail on an immigration detainer and who has since been released. Her original story: floridaphoenix.com/2025/04/17/u...

As well as flat out wrong and awful to say, this is chilling because it echoes Nazi rhetoric— the “useless eaters” definition that would go on to be the excuse to murder hundreds of thousands of disabled people

The Ritz-Carlton Portland's developers boasted a "very big addition to the city’s coffers" when the project broke ground in 2019 — $7.8 million toward more affordable housing. But with recent news of a potential foreclosure on the building, it's an open question whether the city will see the money.

Earlier tonight, City Councilor Angelita Morillo referred her proposed algorithmic rental price-fixing software ordinance back to the Homelessness & Housing Committee. Council was slated to vote on the policy tonight. Morillo cited "new litigation elsewhere" that warrants monitoring. (1/2)

Gonna skeet about the AI rental price fixing ban vote tonight (at least until my phone runs out of batteries). It’s the first item after the consent agenda tonight so maybe it will come up quick but you never know! Here’s @streetroots.bsky.social coverage of the issue while you wait 👇

12 Dem Senators and 48 Dem House members voted for the Laken Riley Act—allowing US Govt to deport immigrants on the mere accusation of a crime. As you see those 60 Dems complain about Mahmoud Khalil, Rumeysa Ozturk, or Kilmar Abrego Garcia, among many more—please know they enabled this fascism.

“The newspaper would shift from a reliance on advertising and subscription revenue under a for-profit structure to a hybrid model that continues gathering these forms of revenue with added philanthropy.” Big news out of Spokane: www.spokesman.com/stories/2025...

Hold on 😶 If the people pay taxes 😕 and those taxes pay for government work 🤔 and the government stops all of that work 😯 but the people are still paying taxes 😳 where is all the revenue going? 🤯

Putting together the Mercury's Pride Guide for June. If you're a queer writer / reporter and you want to contribute, HMU. Ideally, we'd love to work with writers who want to pitch regularly, but also if you've got one fiery essay in your heart, we're here for that too. [email protected]

Too many people told me it “won’t happen here” over the past few years.

i have argued before that MAGA is recapitulating antebellum pro-slavery ideas about citizenship and bodily autonomy. one thing i am also thinking about, when it comes to the rendition of people to a foreign gulag, is the way it is reminiscent of the kidnapping of free blacks for sale into slavery

This is for all the brave ones with moral clarity who constantly inspire me. You’re in my karass.

Hello, it is almost the weekend and you need a new book. Might I recommend my latest? bookshop.org/p/books/blaz...

BREAKING: An immigration court determined our client Mahmoud Khalil to be removable from the U.S. based solely on his political speech. The fight isn't over — we'll keep fighting for Mahmoud's freedom and all of our First Amendment rights in federal court.

A second reading of this ordinance is first up on the regular agenda for the City Council's April 16 meeting (next Wednesday).

Landlords, lobbyists and real estate developers at odds with Portland’s new City Council amid a proposed ordinance banning algorithmic price fixing. Local renters support the ordinance, which is likely to rein in bloated rents. ✍️: @jeremiahhayden.bsky.social

Dan Handelman, an ardent police watchdog and co-founder of Portland Copwatch, died Wednesday. Handelman was best known for his decades of commitment to police oversight and accountability, but his legacy is also steeped in the dogged pursuit of social justice. www.portlandmercury.com/news/2025/04...

The first major legislative action under Portland's new form of government drew broad support from renters struggling to afford inflated housing costs. The proposal to ban algorithmic price fixing also drew fierce opposition from entrenched business advocates seemingly threatened by shifts in power.

The Eugene, Oregon program, Cahoots, which served as the model for Portland Street Response, is shutting down due to funding cuts. This highlights the ongoing challenges in securing sustainable funding for public health and safety programs. www.klcc.org/breaking/202...

Short read from one of my favorite contemporary writers, @elizkolbert.bsky.social, writing about one of my favorite essays, by one of the best to ever do it, the inimitable John McPhee.

Clarence Thomas issued a concurring opinion in Grants Pass v. Johnson homelessness case last year saying 1962's Robinson v. California—which barred criminalizing a status like addiction to narcotics or having a common cold—was wrongly decided. If the US could punish status it could disappear anyone.

Freshman lawmaker introduces bill inspired by newspaper coverage of his son’s presence at the Jan. 6 insurrection. House Bill 3564 would expand the window of time people have to accuse a print, digital or broadcast news outlet of defamation and demand a correction or retraction from 20 days to 60.

I would obviously take a dream job like this as long as it also came with the requisite poverty wage.

See? Old Town’s not so bad!

RealPage already vaguely threatening to sue over Portland's proposed ban on algorithmic rent pricing. The company just filed a lawsuit against Berkeley for a similar ban. A RealPage lobbyist told city councilors Wed that the policy could result in “lengthy and expensive court cases for the city.”

PacifiCorp is appealing the massive 2023 class-action lawsuit that’s expected to award billions of dollars to up to 5,000 Oregonians. An appeal could reverse judgements for wildfire victims who have already gone through trials. www.opb.org/article/2025...
