The Portland airport has touted its $2 billion renovation for being made of sustainably and locally sourced timber. In truth, we don’t know exactly where most of the wood came from, or how much came from sustainably managed forests. www.opb.org/article/2025...

Happy to see @opb.org now using Bluesky!

Oopsie!

Counterpoint: They’ve been perpetuating American imperialism since they read The Fountainhead and they’re just here to capture more power in the chaos.

It’s so close.

“There aren’t really any good choices here,” is certainly THEE vibe of this year's city budget.

A cozy relationship between a city administrator and a business lobbyist highlights potential conflicts of interest around Zenith Energy and other executive functions. Metro Chamber privately discussed Zenith with the mayor's admin staff before sending a letter supporting LUCS, records show.

Public records obtained by Street Roots show Portland Metro Chamber’s influence over a city administrator’s work on Zenith Energy, providing political cover for the controversial land use approval earlier this month.

The City of Portland has long argued Zenith Energy's land use credential is a simple administrative decision. Environmental advocates today sued the city, arguing state law requires a "quasi-judicial" process, meaning the public has sufficient notice and opportunity to comment.

“The goal is not to grow this system (of shelters),” Kotek told the House Committee on Housing and Homelessness. “Shelter is not the goal. Rehousing is the goal.” But Kotek said safe, available shelter is a necessary portion of her larger plan. More from @lmonghughes.bsky.social 👇

There was going to be a lawsuit regardless, either from zenith or Portland citizens. Thanks to those citizens we now also have a city council willing to step up. Thx to Jeremiah & @streetroots.bsky.social for amazing coverage!

Jeremiah Hayden has some in depth reporting on the lawsuit challenging the City's LUCS approval for Zenith Energy. 👇

The City of Portland faces a new legal challenge over its recent land use approval for Zenith Energy. Today, 350PDX, Willamette Riverkeeper, NW Environmental Defense Center and 18 Portlanders filed a Notice of Intent to Appeal at the state Land Use Board, setting up some draaama. Story incoming.

"It is no longer enough to say, 'The other side is really bad, so vote for us because we’re slightly less bad.'" In this op-ed, Angelita Morillo calls on fellow Democrats to stand up to Trump. ⤵️

“You can come up with a lot of ways in which this goes sideways very quickly for mountain communities, for forest communities and for anyone who lives in the wildland urban interface.” Everyone should be reading @aprilehrlich.bsky.social reporting on Forest Service cuts & what it means for Oregon.

“She spoke up, and now she doesn’t want to suffer the consequences” is a chilling thing to hear as an attendee is forcibly removed by private security and cops at a town hall. First Amendment is not going great these days. ✍️ @kayethornbrugh.bsky.social

Big court win: judge rules Exxon, Shell, Chevron, BP and others must face claims by Puerto Rican towns in a RICO case alleging the companies engaged in a coordinated, decades-long deception campaign to conceal the true dangers of fossil fuel consumption. www.reuters.com/legal/litiga...

One day after Enrique Tarrio showed up at an anti-Trump conference to harass Michael Fanone and other Capitol police officers who fended off Trump's shock troops on Jan 6, a bomb threat in the name of 'Enrique T' targets Fanone and the conference, reporting from @joanegreve.bsky.social on the scene

Can’t wait to pay $349.99 a month for a mandatory app subscription to enter a park filled with oil derricks and deputized storm troopers serving cotton ketamine to kids.

To be clear: We are witnessing the dismantling of our firefighting system, leaving wild lands dangerously vulnerable to catastrophic fires. Not just on federal lands —This could weaken our mutual aid firefighting across the board. If you live near wild areas, prepare yourself and your family.

For months we were told a ceasefire could not be reached mostly because Hamas refused to release hostages, but the disparity in the number of Israelis v. Palestinians being released is staggering. The “prisoner” or “hostage” label does a lot of work here.

Ta-Nehisi Coates in Seattle about the Democratic Party in this moment: “If you can’t stand up against genocide, why should I believe you can stand up for democracy?”

When asked how Oregon Republicans feel about Trump & D.C. Republicans freezing U.S. Forest Service wildfire prevention grants, firing 10% of agency staff, Oregon's lead House Republican, Rep. Christine Drazan, said she has "every confidence" feds will protect the 53% of Oregon land they own...

Advocates are gathering outside the US District Courthouse in Seattle to call for the release of José Medina Andrade, a Venezuelan asylum seeker who was recently transferred by the Trump administration to Guantanamo Bay.

In the next few weeks I'll be introducing a process to submit your policy ideas to me. I've been cooking up this idea for a while now and I'm excited to try it out! My entire motivation to enter politics is to change the paradigm and return the power to the people. Y'all ready to lock in!? 💪🏾🫡

Great piece on academic writing vs narrative reportage. Rothman also nails how an otherwise laudably intense focus on text can close off *talking*. I'll ask students: "Did you contact the author of this study?" No, they didn't. Writing has a person behind it, & they're a source too.

Reporting is that all the kids with measles in Texas outbreak are unvaccinated, but something important to realize is that, because this vaccine is not 100% effective, anti-vax parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids also risk the lives of *other people's children* who have weak immune response

Oh yeah we’re talking on KBOO at 5:30 today about some of this plus new info showing how city administrators and business lobbyists tried to change the narrative in advance of LUCS approval. 🥃

Four city councilors have co-signed a resolution seeking an investigation into Zenith Energy's potential franchise agreement violations and asking the City Auditor to investigate recent "competing statements" by public officials. Councilors requested an addition to the full council agenda on 2/19.
