It was wonderful to meet you Judi and to hear about your fantastic work. Really keen to support everything you are doing to make sure we have a hospice locally and end the inequity in palliative care for residents.

So you think it’s healthy for children to watch violent pornography? I worked for a children’s charity and the harm caused to children watching pornography is clear. That’s why it’s being age-gated this year.

I think mostly we just juggle between grandparents, holiday clubs and split time between our leave to spend quality time with the kids. Not easy if you are a single parent though.

Honouring Fawziyah’s legacy means achieving real change.
Implementing a long-overdue statutory definition of honour-based abuse is the first step in achieving that change.

I was honoured to hear Yasmin and Karma Nirvana’s Survivor Ambassador Panel speak at our event. Their incredible bravery made this event possible.
I would also like to thank Minister Jess Phillips and Nicole Jacobs, Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England & Wales, for speaking.

In the wake of Fawziyah’s murder, her family, spearheaded by her mother, Yasmin, have campaigned with Karma Nirvana for concrete change that will stop their immense pain from being experienced by other families.

This definition of HBA, drafted by barrister Naomi Wiseman, has been endorsed by victims and the VAWG sector.
Writing it into law will provide clarity across sectors, ensuring consistent identification, response and recording of HBA, and leading to better protection for victims.

- HBA is misunderstood or overlooked by professionals and legal bodies
- HBA is inconsistently identified due to competing definitions
- The role of multiple perpetrators is missed
- Data collection is poor
- And, ultimately, the human cost will continue to grow.

HBA victims face unique barriers to seeking help. The systemic response to HBA continues to fall short, failing to fully understand the honour-driven and collective dynamics underpinning its perpetration.
Failing to address it specifically means:

Fawziyah’s abuse was characterised by key elements of HBA:
- Collective perpetration
- Honour-driven motivations
- Control and punishment
- Shame as a barrier to leave
Had her case been recognised for the complex abuse it involved, Fawziyah might have had a chance to escape.

Her story, told through the C4 documentary ‘The Push: Murder on the Cliff’, highlights systemic failures to recognise the abuse she faced and take suitable action.
Despite calls for help, including two police visits days before her death, the abuse was never fully recognised as HBA.

In 2021, Fawziyah Javed, a 31-year old lawyer from Leeds, was murdered by her husband Kashif Anwar after he pushed her off Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh.
At the time of her murder, Fawziyah was pregnant; she planned to divorce Anwar and raise her first child as a single parent.
