We just released Leaves Fall, Spirits Rise today! Rake up leaves with friends (or solo!) by "raking up" playing cards. Push to get up to 20 points. You can stop anytime, but if you push too far... buh-bye cards. Buy it or grab a free copy --> beth-and-angel-make-games.itch.io/leaves-fall-...

Just reminded myself how hard the ending of Coffin Text Spell 714 goes

Probably my favourite traditional roll & move is the Sudanese Li’b el Marafib, aka the Hyena Game. It starts as a gentle race game & ends as survival horror. To start, you're trying to get your mother from the village to the well, where she washes her clothes, then back home. But there's a twist.

Strawberries! #art #illustration

I chatted about the first issue of Tumulus (review copy provided) on today's episode of @omnigamers.bsky.social. It's a smorgasboard of game ephemera from board game reviews to TTRPG tables and micro-games. It's always a delight to see independant games coverage as physical media.

It is not just costing us more money at the ports, it is slowing down the time at the ports which is creating havoc too. Pro-business my butt.

I started dancing two years ago, best thing I did for myself in forever Beside dancing being great, it was (is) really a journey of learning that I can still learn things from the bottom Highly recommend!

Wizards need rest too

This weekend my biggest and dummeste game got closer to realization. We delivered the rules to the judges of Fastaval 2025, and now mostly just have to produce the dumb thing (and maybe tweak a few numbers). Looking forward to see it in action, and being able to work on smaller stuff again✨ 🎲✂️

old Soviet joke for our times: Guy stops by the newsstand every day, scans the front page, doesn’t buy the paper. One day the vendor asks what he’s up to. Guy says: “looking for an obituary.” Vendor says “those are towards the back of the paper, comrade.” Guy says: “not the one I’m looking for.”

If you're still on Substack but want to make the move elsewhere, I highly recommend Ghost. Email [email protected] and they'll take care of virtually everything. If you're worried about hanging onto subscribers, they kept everything in place from the old place. I've added 100+ new ones today.

Rabbit mum from Gwelf book one. Watercolour.

Headed up to the Forest of Dean yesterday for the Queer Nature Cabaret. I performed as Mother Nature, making a new utopia before the end of the world, with the help of the audience, some toilet roll tubes and a lot of gaffer tape 😁🧡

I've finished off the sellsheet for World's Edge! This game won a design competition a while back, has seen a bunch of development since then, and I'll be looking for a publisher real soon! (if anyone knows any pubs looking for small-box flip-and-writes, I'm all ears 😅) 🎲✂️

You think you have designed a simple game, and then you sit down to write the rules ... 🎲✂️

Introducing the FINALISTS FOR THE 2025 CARDBOARD EDISON AWARD!!! cardboardedison.com/award

One week left in the crowdfunding campaign for Keep the Faith! Here’s me running some tests earlier today to make sure everything is locked and ready to go. I really happy with this game — if you’re RPG-curious or if you love worldbuilding games, you’lldig it. www.backerkit.com/c/projects/c...

Development of the Birrin 'EVA' artwork. The second version had a little maneuvering unit, probably just pressurized nitrogen for helping move around outside; another advantage of more limbs.

I think in the end, supporting these companies it’s a little like with eating animal produce. Every bit you can cut out of your life helps if a lot of us do it. It’s not necessarily a 0 or 100 thing.

If you played TTRPGs between 1970-2004, PhD Candidate Geoffrey Ramirez (Binghamton U) is seeking participants for “Character Creation: The Tabletop Role-Players Oral History Project” as part of his dissertation. Interviews will be archived at the Strong Museum of Play (can be time-locked, etc)

you do not owe the world misery

It might hurt my bottom line, but I’m probably going to stop posting art to Twitter entirely and I suggest you do too. Not only is the site actively putting a “Okay, now remix this” button below art (and elevating them above the OP with a QRT) and it’s false flagging original art as made by AI.

K! So! We spent this week figuring out how the tariffs, inflation and other bullshit is going to affect business. Time to thread. For those not in the know, I'm the Director at Hachette Boardgames USA and I import games for foreign publishers and market and sell them in the US. 1/?

I just learned the exciting hack that you can prevent Google’s AI from showing up at the top of your results by including a curse word, which has given me the perfect excuse to start every query with “fucking.”

Is this the famed freedom of speech these people flount and claim to defend? Banning words? I wish media outlets would talk more about the term of "Gleichschaltung". It's a cold, hard word that lead to the death of millions. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gleichs...

Yes!! One of the main sources for my historical research are trade journals. Obviously the games themselves are important, but a game in isolation can rarely tell me about the wider ecosystem of the industry, player engagement, player communities etc.

Big helmet for comfort :)

Getting slightly distracted by this mural painting that's going on outside

I also do consulting for games and game-adjacent projects! Need help with worldbuilding/narrative/flavour text etc? Turns out a narrative person who’s also a trained and published historian can be very helpful for a bunch of things even if your game does not have a historical setting!

If the way you verbally explain a game rule or card doesn't match how it's written down, it's worth examining whether the writing can be tweaked in some way. Reminder text is good!

I do think it’s important.

Why won't Star Wars return to podracing, what are they afraid of?
