Getting to deploy a pun like that always makes a headline writer's day.

Also, a lot of programs will auto-convert it for you if you type two hyphens in a row. I've seen it work in TextEdit, Pages, and Scrivener. It's called "smart dashes," and you can turn it on or off in settings if you want (I think it's on by default).

Enough concerns got raised about those contracts that we got told by our own higher-ups that they were taking it back to Legal, and until we got further word, DON'T SIGN ANYTHING. We never got new ones.
But I vow I never stole any scrap lumber.
(May have acquired a few pens, though.)

Years back, after a merger that brought the company I was working for into Disney, we got sent contracts. My favorite bit was the section that specified what we weren't allowed to take off of Studio (yes, it was capitalized) property. It got as granular as dead batteries and scrap lumber.

You can always tell when the editors have pretty much been told, "DOESN'T MATTER. GET IT TO PRINT. GET. IT. TO. PRINT."
(I remember finding British spelling/wording sneaking into the US editions of a series that shall go unnamed, but erratically, like the copyedit had been a serious rush job.)

What say we get the entire West Coast together on this?

(On that note, my favorite piece of "someone actually paid some fucking attention" set dressing was in Fargo. There's one scene where you can see a set of Red Wing Pottery mugs exactly like the ones my Minnesotan mom bought there years back. :)

As for 50 Shades, I watched Jenny Nicholson's video on it and that's as close as I'm gonna get.

I read the Twilight books because I wanted to get a handle on why they got so popular. I left the experience having, shall we say, complicated thoughts.
Only ever watched the first movie, but if only for promptly putting a logging truck onscreen and then having Charlie drink a Rainier: ten points.

oh no. Just...nope.
For that matter, one of the Twilight books mentions "Union Lake" instead of "Lake Union." And for some reason, Bella gets to Forks by first flying from SeaTac to Port Angeles. For God's sake, just get in a car and drive.

I don't know if I'd say we used it ALL the time, but "kerfuffle" is a fun word that deserves more play.
Also, my mom accidentally said "fot hudge" in place of "hot fudge" once and I've struggled ever since to say it the right way around. The spoonerism's too good.

My dad worked for Boeing in defense & space when they had the contract to build the ISS's first module. He spent the better part of a couple years in Huntsville working on that.
I'm more and more glad he's not around to watch this clusterfuck right now. *sigh*

The latter doesn't work for dashes, though. You just get --------.

Macs have pretty intuitive keyboard shortcuts for a lot of diacritics. If you want to type an umlaut, for example, it's option+u and then the vowel you want (ü, ï, ö, whatever). They've also picked up the trick from iOS where you can long-press a letter and pick from various options.

lol. Valid.
On a Mac, if you need to do it manually, it basically goes like this:
- : hyphen
– : option + hyphen
— : option + shift + hyphen
I just rarely remember to do it because mostly it swaps it out for me!

(TextEdit does it, Scrivener does it, Pages presumably does but I haven't had it open in a while...)

In most of the programs I use, typing them that way auto-converts to proper em dashes, but Chrome isn't cooperating with me. :)
Here—this one should look better.

These are the same people who shriek at writers who do actually know what we're doing because--gasp--occasionally we use em dashes.

You want to up your pun game, pick the horsiest word. :)

But I do remember reading the plot descriptions of some of the SVH books and feeling very "?!?" about it all. :)

I never got to Sweet Valley High, mostly because I started with Sweet Valley Twins, realized the plot of almost every book was "Jessica gets in trouble, Elizabeth gets her out" (and extremely rarely the other way around), and decided I was just kinda done before graduating to the YA section.
