‘supercilious’ | adjective | coolly and patronizingly haughty It comes from the Latin word meaning “eyebrow,” and was used in Latin to refer to the expression of arrogant people.

‘Mortgage’ comes from two Old French words meaning “death” and “pledge.” …seems like a bit much, right?

‘Starting’ is one of the longest English words which can still form a word if you keep removing one letter at a time. Starting Staring String Sting Sing Sin In I

I love this time of year because people will post something super dramatic and vague like “Nooooooo” and I can’t tell if it’s about football or *gestures outside window* all of this.

When we lock into a particular goal too quickly, we blind ourselves to alternate routes forward that might have been better and easier. We can avoid this trap by asking ourselves one simple question. behavioralscientist.org/dan-heath-wh...

A little motivation for your Sunday from David Lynch 🤍

Gift link to Kyle MacLachlan's essay on #DavidLynch in the NYT. "It’s why he never wanted to explain his work. He wasn’t trying to be surly or obtuse....It’s just that explaining his art after the fact seemed antithetical to the very point of making it."

I saw a post calling the TikTok ban “mass unemployment.” I feel for folks, but I’m horrified by how social apps trick ppl into building a biz entirely on what are just marketing channels. We need businesses that can survive w/o social media. If they can’t, we don’t own our businesses. They do.

Why is the save icon in your software a floppy disk that no one has used for over 20 years? It's a skeuomorph. A skeuomorph is when a new design borrows practical elements from a former design and repurposes them in a functional or ornamental way.

So here's what's cool about my job: Yesterday morning I said, "We really ought to have TWIN PEAKS available." So then a bunch of people scrambled, worked really hard, and now you can watch every episode of David Lynch & Mark Frost's original series for free on Pluto TV: pluto.tv/us/on-demand...

Another way to say that is: They wanted alternative sources of news. What they got is alternatives to reality itself.

"We're in a dark woods now, and there's a soft wind blowing through some sycamore trees. There's a moon out and some animal sounds in the background, and you can hear the hoot of an owl. ... Get me into that beautiful darkness with the soft wind." www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-eq...

I was a huge Twin Peaks fan. Totally obsessed. It was so different and so perfect. David Lynch created magnificently intricate worlds with characters who had depth and soul. He probed interesting concepts in his unique way. He was truly one of a kind.

No need to debunk this. The word ‘bunk’ is a shortened form of ‘bunkum,’ which came from Buncombe County, North Carolina (where Asheville is located). In 1820, the congressman from Buncombe County gave an intentionally boring and long-winded speech to Congress...

No thank you

'World Wide Web' contains fewer syllables than its intended short form, 'www.' The shorter version actually takes longer to say.

Telling writers the emdash signals AI is like telling a YouTuber the jump cut does. AI creates the statistical average of the internet. Unless you go to great lengths to train it on your style or direct it to include or omit things, all you can expect is what’s common.

A simplified Three Bricklayers story goes that a person visited a building project asking 3 workers: “What are you doing?” The first, “I’m laying bricks.” The second, “I’m building a wall.” And the third, “I’m creating a cathedral.” More: https://sketchplanations.com/the-three-bricklayers

Me: Maybe this will be on the word list. Narrator: It wasn’t.

I have to admit that for a second I wondered if this was Ai, but it's been on the internet since at least 2019. All I know is that it supposedly shows people throwing typewriters into the water near Bergen in Norway, somewhere in the 1930s. As an old typewriter fan, this hurts.

Me: so the reason they think AI is good at writing is they think writing is about creating content quickly when in reality writing is thinking so it helps you to create clarity slowly and so the mess of making is really the most important part of it. Uber driver: why did you sit in the front?

BlueSky is emerging as a potential game-changer in social media. Publishers like The Boston Globe report 3-4x higher engagement, and its open-web approach to link sharing makes it marketer-friendly. It’s early, but worth keeping an eye on. #SocialMedia #BlueSky #Marketing

Around 700 BCE ‘January’ and ‘February’ were added to the calendar, initially placed at the end of the year. When these two months were later bumped to the front of the calendar, ‘September,’ ‘October,’ ‘November,’ and ‘December’ found themselves at odds with their roots.
