Maybe overkill but I have a few cube boxes with major type (electric, audio/MIDI, computer, video) and then have categorized huge zip bags like USB with smaller zip bags containing the various subtypes, written on the bags. Also every cable is rolled up and tied with velcro.

Wasn't that the ZX81? My dad got so frustrated with the RAM extender losing contact due to the membrane keys being pressed, crashing the whole thing, that he soldered a huge wooden switchboard to the whole thing, replacing the keyboard.
