An incredible view of a dust storm charging south across Mexico.

The Trump admin aims to zero out funding for NOAA’s 16 cooperative institutes, which study everything from extreme weather to fisheries to toxic algae. I spent last week talking with folks about the losses — & potential threats — to society if these institutes close. www.eenews.net/articles/tru...

Learning so much from @adamjkucharski.bsky.social’s “Proof”—for example, I certainly didn’t know before that Francis Galton published a Nature paper on how to cut a cake so that it doesn’t dry out. www.nature.com/articles/075...

Seeing a number of fed friends announce their "retirement" on FB today. This is probably not what they wanted, but in every case there was a sense of relief to be out of there. Lots of experience and institutional knowledge in critical areas is now just gone with no replacements in sight.

“We've had to essentially go dark and we're waiting to hear when and if the next year contract does get approved,” said Nielson-Gammon, the Texas state climatologist and professor at Texas A&M University. www.kcur.org/news/2025-04...

Saturday is looking like an active day of both severe weather and Excessive Rainfall. At least 20 million people are under a Slight Risk.

more insanity from noaa probationary firings…they are saying since our firings are now retroactive to 2/27 our health insurance has ended…despite our insurance premiums being taken out of our admin leave pay

reading the news is like a DDoS attack on my brain

You may see messages like this on parts of our website, including the drought page. We rely heavily on maps & data from the High Plains Regional Climate Center, which no longer has funding. We'll do our best to point to alternative data sources, but many of these products are not easy to replicate.

visited nws performance branch, which is back up. they are working to restore warnings, LSRs, and such back to March 5th or so. I cant stress how hard it is to backfill near and real time data, across an agency, that operates 24-7, and is reeling from <gestures wildly> all-the-things.

I am once again begging people to realize that the law is words on paper and is not self executing. "That's illegal" is not and has never been synonymous with "that's impossible" or "that can't be done." "That's illegal" means "you might get in trouble for that depending on who you are."

Many NOAA databases are scheduled to be decommissioned, including several I frequently use (IMLGS; sediment core database) and are crucial to my work. But there's also databases that normal people care about (earthquakes!). Can we download these in their entirety and host them somewhere else? 🌊🧪

NOAA budget proposal would affect weather satellite, other space programs The White House’s budget proposal for NOAA would seek to make major changes in a weather satellite program as well as transfer other space programs.

I wrote a post with my perspectives on the reports today about NOAA's FY26 budget passback and the implications. I will admit this was really hard to write - it's almost inconceivable to me that we are really doing this. open.substack.com/pub/balanced...

with stn spacing near 350-450km, removing sites and limiting launches, we lose resolution. introducing more synoptic scale errors from cycled models will be weird for predictability. the fun will be in trying to detect these effects on forecasts. stats riders, mount up!

my fav part of IT is how no one checks their work. just check the box. pass the buck.

I'm devastated and heartbroken. Staff at the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) got the ax. Most likely means the Sixth National Climate Assessment (NCA6) is also cooked. USGCRP was the glue across the Federal family on all things climate - reducing duplication and making efficiencies.

Biggest commitment to a 3 second joke I've ever seen

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

Historic rainfall across the Ohio River Basin (watershed average of 5.13" in the last 7 days) has caused widespread flooding along the River and its tributaries. The Ohio River at Old Shawneetown, IL is expected to crest over 53', the 6th highest crest on record and the highest since May 2011.

This is a huge problem for helping the public understanding the value of emergency management. FEMA and emergency management agencies are saving lives everyday but how can we prove it?

We often (rightly) see maps like these showing how good SPC convective outlooks are; let's also give some kudos to WPC for some outstanding excessive rainfall outlooks for this event. Especially impressive are the day 5 outlooks, giving advance notice of prolonged excessive rainfall and flood risk.

Here's the status of river gauges over the flooded areas. Blue circles indicate record flooding levels, and black indicates they are within a foot of the record. #StateOfFlood #KYwx #TNwx #INwx @nws.noaa.gov

Flood/flash flood reports as well as top rainfall reports going back to last Wednesday. Over 15 inches in parts of western Kentucky. ☔️🌧️

I smiled at this interesting post tornado damage survey from NWS in North Webster, IN, after a tornado in southern Michigan at Bethel Township. The meteorologists surveyed within a day or two of the tornado, and the Amish community had all the home damage already repaired. #miwx

Old meme, but I'm getting a laugh out of "months"
