“The Office of Personnel Management does not have any authority whatsoever under any statute in the history of the universe, to hire and fire employees within another agency,” www.nbcnews.com/politics/pol...

I made this the other night while procrastinating, mainly because I thought all the posts about the blackout were boring. It feels like there is momentum bringing people together!

I sit on a committee for the Excellence in ScComm awards. This afternoon, I wrote to my fellow members that unless & until @nationalacademies.org “actively combat political censorship instead of capitulating to illegal, racist demands, I will not participate in any further service on their behalf.“

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

@matthewherron.bsky.social is an amazing person and #scientist. What happened to him and other federal employees is #terrible and seriously damages #science and the American people!

Happy Darwin day, everyone! Charles is 216 years old today. He is not here anymore, but his theory is still alive and well!

Just received an NSF panel availability request…

If you are preparing to talk to people about the economic impacts that the budget cuts to NSF will have on your states, consider reading through the relevant NSF fact sheets first. new.nsf.gov/about/fact-s...

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

America is the country where I was trained to do science, and I’m proud of all that we’ve accomplished. I’m not going to let one man, who is trying to dismantle so many of our scientific institutions, claim our flag. It doesn’t belong to him. It belongs to us. 🇺🇸

SICB and its members have had a great relationship with NSF for decades. Our members have pushed US science into new frontiers and trained new scientists to work in public and private sectors of the "bioeconomy." We have helped prepare the nation for the future. arstechnica.com/science/2025...

Continuing to screen existing (and new) grants to comply with the EOs appears to be in direct violation of the restraining order. Funding agencies should instead be using this window to award as many grants as possible. What am I missing?

SICB is back! Please follow the society's new BlueSky account: @sicb.bsky.social SICB recognizes that the scientific enterprise is only successful because of the people performing that science. Without those people, science and all of the political and economic strength that it provides, stops.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

We will never stay silent. We are so proud to have joined thousands of marchers from across the nation at the People's March in Washington, DC to send an important message to our elected leaders: You work for the people. ALL the people. Take action! Learn more: www.peoplesmarch.com/act

Just bought $60 worth of @benandjerrys.bsky.social. Who knew fighting fascists was so delicious?

First post on a new social media platform (as everything else seems to be sinking like the Titanic)!
