Hey @1goodtern.bsky.social How is the "respiratory season" going ? An increasing number of radio and television presenters are breathless and hoarse, and MPs are clearly suffering with cold-like symptoms. Anecdata coming from schools, too.

omg? lol

Here are some nice mushrooms

CANADIAN Version of this series would have been boring. Man gets cancer... Man goes to Dr. because they have universal healthcare. The End.

Thanks to all the atheists out there just doing the right thing without me threatening you with fire and brimstone.

Involved in family care of elders today. God TV is on. The preacher is praying for healing for people. Suddenly I have insight. Many ordinary Americans are thrown on the mercy of Jesus, because they can't afford healthcare. Let's get back to the communal welfare of the Acts of the Apostles.

And exactly how many times lower would it have to be to get R<1… Clue. Not 9 times.

New modeling study finds that if everyone in the United Kingdom had worn N95 or FFP2 masks from the start of the pandemic, the rate of COVID-19 transmission would have been 9 times lower.

Just because a bunch of professors at Stanford say COVID’s no big deal doesn’t make it true. You know this. You know someone who’s died from covid. You know someone with long covid. You’ve probably had covid several times yourself. They are spreading misinformation because it fits their ideology.

In 1888, a course at MIT taught how to use CO2 measurements to determine whether a building was properly ventilated. The CO2 thresholds recommended in 1888 are exactly those used in 2024 by a large number of official agencies: 600, 800, 1000 and 1500ppm. Public health is also a matter for engineers.

It’s alarming to think #H5N1 is just one mutation away from human-to-human transmission. If we had acted decisively when it first emerged in March, we wouldn’t be playing Russian Roulette with this threat now. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

🧼✈️ Norovirus Prevention at Airports A new @plos.bsky.social study finds that disinfecting public surfaces every 2 hours can reduce norovirus infection risk in airports by up to 83%. How will airports adopt this change? 🔗 doi.org/10.1371/jour... #SciComm 🧪 🍎 #PublicHealth

Even if you believe that Long Covid is caused by viral fragments and not replicating virus. Do you really think reinfection is going to improve that outcome? Why not fight for better vaccines to target these stubborn antigens.

Good morning to all the kind smart people in my phone. Yes, you with the bed hair and not enough caffeine. Especially you.

I asked my aunt, the doctor, to help me make sense of the new article in Science titled: “A single mutation in bovine influenza H5N1 hemagglutinin switches specificity to human receptors,” and my aunt replied: “it means that we are a single mutation away from catastrophe.”

Q: What's worse than having a quad-demic? A: Having a quad-demic straight after a large wave of Covid infections that have damaged people's immune systems.

Before 2020, I was sick pretty often and it was a really big obstacle for me academically. Now several years wiser, I'm teaching classes of >80 undergrads and not even catching a sniffle all term. Getting sick this much less this easily has been a huge quality of life upgrade; I highly recommend it!
