Thanks Garth, glad you liked it. My book, that is, not Nick's. I'm furious you liked his.

It's definitely preferable to please DO die soon, though I've had a couple of those in my time too.

This week's Devil is the laughably out of his depth Brother Diaz. All he wanted was a middling post in the church bureaucracy. He's ended up in charge of a set of literal monsters. Will he get to Troy before being eaten by any of his own congregation?

Partly it's the problem of ultra-high level D&D - scrappy origin stories are a lot more interesting and relatable on the whole than the doings of godlike beings who defy understanding. More focus, or more room, would've been a great thing. But I'm grateful for what we got.

But characters, situations, whole themes would be in your face at one point then drop away entirely. Characters would have whirlwind changes of heart. What had been a story of class struggle was jettisoned in favour of magico-philosophy that didn't do much for me...

As if a plan for a much bigger story had to be all finished up at breakneck pace. It was best when it digressed, took time to focus on a given character or situation for an episode and really dig in. Brilliant music sequences, powerful and affecting moments at times...

This week's Devil is the man who once called himself the Terror of Damietta in the hope that it would stick, one of the four (possibly three) best necromancers in Europe, Balthazar Sham Ivam Draxi.
