Working with an interdisciplinary team, we have developed a website to communicate how the White House's proposed cuts to health research would cause losses of $16B and 68,500 jobs. Find out how your community may be impacted. Explore more at SCIMaP: scienceimpacts.org a 🧵

The atomic spectral lines in this app come from the NIST atomic spectroscopy group, which has provided the world with spectroscopic measurements for 120 years. Today we got word that the federal government is laying off the entire group. 🔭🧪

Jessica Spake's work centers on characterizing the atmospheres of giant, gaseous exoplanets passing in front of their stars. In 2018, she made the first successful observation of helium in a planet outside of our Solar System. Last year she joined the Observatories as a Staff Scientist.

Not bad news!

“I wouldn’t say that it’s a proof that there’s helium in Earth’s core, but it suggests that it’s possible,” Ronald Cohen, a computational physicist, said.

Here’s another win, from our favorite allergist @rubinallergy.bsky.social We will have a flu vaccine for next season!!! There was a lot of concern that it wasn’t gonna happen but a meeting was held and they did decide which strains to target So bravo to the amazing fighters who made this happen

We can upload 3 minute videos now. YOU KNOW THE RULE

Help our friends at the NSF: Seeking scientists based in California who are willing to attest to direct harm caused by NSF firings. If you’re in the science world, please RT this to widen the net— a lawsuit on the unjust mass firings needs these comments. (comment briefly here and I’ll follow up!)

We got some honks and lots of waves!

Omg! Y’all. This has been such a great conference @kavlifoundation.bsky.social @sloanfoundation.bsky.social

CNN [Mar 3] -- Senate Dems don't drop a single vote as they filibuster Rep anti-trans sports bill on a party line vote: 51-45 (60 needed to pass). Dems only lost 3 in earlier House vote. Sports is the best issue for Reps with nearly 2/3 of voters supporting. Go Dems! [@rikiwilchins.bsky.social‬]

Starmer to Zelenskyy: You are very very welcome here in Downing Street. As you heard from the cheers outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom.

HEY SOCAL & LA FRIENDS! We’ve gotten a TON of questions about how to get involved in SoCal/LA—and here’s the answer! ☀️🌎⬇️ Spread the word & tag someone in LA that should check it out!

“As science strives to learn more about invisible matter, let us hope that we don't see a halt or even a reversal in the struggle to use all available brains in confronting the deep mysteries of the universe.” - @e-astronomer.bsky.social #VeraRubin

Apparently, between the switch to Bluesky and my defense and move, I've neglected to post about the last paper of my PhD. Now that it's been published in ApJ, here's a thread on how upper atmospheric opacities can alter escape rates and whether sub-Neptunes can retain primordial H/He 🔭🧪 1/10

If you're looking for details for your calls, House Dems produced this tool where you can how many people in your district are at risk of losing jobs, health care, and food on the table from the House GOP budget. "For the sake of the X people in CA-54 who will lose their Medicaid, please vote no."

Tired of wondering which atomic lines are in your spectra? You need: *whose line is it anyway?* An interactive tool for identifying atomic spectral lines. 🧪🔭 #stars install: pip install whoseline source: github.com/bmorris3/who...

I will be watching this on repeat for the next little while.

I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖

On the cutting room floor is the bit where the host introduced their interview series, The Interview, and I asked how long it took to come up with the name. Anyway, here’s me talking about birds and science and burnout and moving through the world. The photo’s nice! www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/m...

Nearly one in 10 adults in the U.S. identifies as LGBTQ, according to a large analysis from Gallup released Thursday — almost triple the share since Gallup began counting in 2012, and up by two-thirds since 2020. nyti.ms/42ZZGIN

Oh wow! I don't think I've ever seen so many people I know who are all so deserving win a prize at once! Congrats, all!!!!

DEI policies are 15 points more popular than Elon Musk. Let that sink in.

Major news! A court in Montana has just declared SB458, a bill that "defines sex" in a way that ends the legal recognition of transgender people in Montana, as facially unconstitutional. This is the first time a bill defining sex has been ruled on! Huge win for trans people in MT!

Hey scientists, if anyone out there wants to do this but is unsure about writing for a newspaper/the public, I'm a professional science writer and would be happy to work with you on your piece.

This morning, the US National Science Foundation fired 168 employees, approximately 10% of its workforce, for no cause other than they were the agency's most recent hires. 🧪 Co-workers are leaving supportive messages before they have to clear out of the building at 5 p.m. Sent to me by a source ⬇️

My biggest story I worked on last year is up, on the Dragonfly mission to Titan! Featuring @planetdr.bsky.social , @spacewhalerider.com , and (the awesomely named but not on bsky) Zibi Turtle. This is an amazing mission and one I hope to see come to fruition with some surprising science. 🧪🔭🪐
