Wilkerson tells a story in "Caste" about a young boy in Indiana in the 1950s who was not allowed to swim in a pool to celebrate his baseball team's win because he's black. It's a humiliating and sickening story that left me in tears, and made me wonder if there's any hope at all for the human race.
