Minor correction. I don't think it is a "deep, persistent incomprehension of how scientific research works and what it provides" so much as a deep *rejection* of how science research works and what it provides. The Continuing Crisis, Part IV | Science | AAAS www.science.org/content/blog...

Not all university presidents are cowards. This, from the pres of Wesleyan, should be mandatory reading for leaders. “It's 1 thing to be reminded that "elections have consequences," but quite another to insist that the best response to the abuse of authority is to be restrained, demure, neutral.” +

Study sections dropping like flies. We are officially at a standstill at the NIH.

I know that there are lots of reasons to be scared and sad at the moment, but for folks who aren’t following what had been happening with the national park services, this is a good summary of what has happened and the potential implications. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Professors please pull up a chair. I’ve been talking to my classes about what has been going on. I explained indirect costs to them. I talked to them about what a probationary employee is in the government. At the end of class they asked if we could talk about it more. (1/)

There are actions in: Atlanta, GA Austin, TX Boston, MA Chicago, IL Los Angeles, CA St. Paul, MN Newark, NJ New Brunswick, NJ New Haven, CT New York, NY Philadelphia, PA Portland, OR Seattle, WA State College, PA St. Louis, MO and Washington, DC if you can make one of these actions, please join! 🧪

Does anyone know if NPI is still on? It's also supposed to meet tomorrow.

MCNP study section cancelled the day before it was supposed to meet, with no future date set or suggested. What a fucking disaster.

survey to help Higher Education Labor United get information and mobilize public statements, press conferences, and other public actions to fight current funding freezes and support of biomedical research

Got my first "Violating an Executive Order" and "I'll make sure you lose federal funding" parent threat today for teaching "DEI" books in our upcoming "Liberty and Justice" themed unit. Even in "Blue" Massachusetts we're dealing with this. Anyway, don't obey in advance, and don't obey later.

Icymi not one, not two, but three lawsuits were filed today against the Trump administration’s unlawful actions to de-fund science. The first one, filed by 22 state attorneys general, already led to a temporary restraining order. So, um, do lawsuits make the govt more efficient, or?

We have our answer, as expected. They’ll end every research program if it doesn’t make them money. Anyone thinking they can ride this arson into some kind of reform is gravely mistaken.

Just got the dreaded email. University of Iowa is halting all NIH grant submissions. Losing a generation of scientists here will send the state backwards. What a travesty.

Have any institutions responded to the NIH change in IDC policy this morning? Either internally, among their staff, or externally, by filing anything with the courts?

John is right. IF you have the stomach for it, push back against the ignorance and anti-science sentiment on Twitter. I can do it in small doses only, but I make the most of my time there by amplifying sane voices, posting facts and links, and rebutting the misinformation from some big accounts.

Get in Dorks, we are going protesting. STAND UP FOR SCIENCE. MARCH 7th 12-4pm. DC AND YOUR STATE CAPITALS. More information to come.

The illegal cut of NIH indirect costs will mean at least $115M cut to University of Pittsburgh @fetterman.senate.gov @davemccormick.bsky.social. This means huge loss of middle and working class jobs and research trials for breakthrough treatments for residents of Pennsylvania, Ohio, & West Virginia

Every single stupid conversation I’ve had with a scientist about anticipatory obedience and historical comparisons over the last week has had me thinking about how scientists’ political incompetence is one of the major arguments for a liberal arts education Like you’re literally a tool without it

Pro tip: when explaining the NIH cuts to friends and family, use "research infrastructure" rather than "indirect costs" or, godforbid, "overhead." DOGE just slashed the budget for research infrastructure. It's accurate and it drives home that the fight is over jobs and facilities, not "waste."

THIS THIS THIS this entire administration determined to undermine science and expertise and reducing indirects is one strategy of many to reduce the influence of expertise and higher education in our society.

“Maybe thèse drastic cuts will make things more efficient.” Please, shut up forever for the love of the universe. Gutting govt indirects is an attack on higher ed and should be seen through that lens only.

Trump & Musk are making massive cuts to the National Institutes of Health. I know there is a lot going on right now, but this is one of worst things they have done so far, will affect cancer research and trials, the search for cures, innovation and competitiveness, our universities. Your lives.

from a decade of comms experience my advice is to just call them cuts. they are making huge cuts to ALL the research on medicines we use every day, and cures for diseases like cancer. 1) keep it simple 2) keep it brief 3) make it actionable

This is dangerously irresponsible on every level. Indiscriminately slashing this funding will cripple lifesaving research on everything from cancer to opioid addiction.

Since there has been a lot of misinformation circulating since last night, I find this AAMC infographic helpful in illustrating which types of expenses are and are not covered by NIH indirect cost reimbursements.

Scientists having a come to Jesus moment about *Facilities* and Administrative costs is good, actually.

NIH has cut billions of dollars in biomedical funding, effective immediately The move halts a large slice of money for most universities and research institutions virtually overnight, imperiling vital research in everything from cancer to heart disease. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2025/...

They didn’t wait until Monday, nice! More of this! Including in defense of our trainees!

#lightsinlabs is a good hashtag www.aamc.org/news/press-r...

i get this sentiment, i really do. but looking at some of the replies to scientists & the filth that's there behind anon accounts is just not worth it. they could be russian bots at best & 4chan racist incels that'll never change at worst. people like that need intensive counseling to deprogram them

More unsolicited advice. Don’t tell your trainees not to worry and to just focus on their work. 1) you’re invalidating their very rational fears; 2) our institutions are NOT defending them; 3) you’re telling them “my data is more important than your future.”

I am starting this morning by reaching outside of my science echo chamber (posting on facebook) to explain why the NIH matters and why the new indirect rate policy will be catastrophic to everyone
