Scientists are very mobile. They will flee to less authoritarian regimes like Canada, Europe, Australia. There are greener pastures just as USA was such a green pasture after collapse of Soviet Union. The West got excellent highly-educated scientists without paying $$ for education and experience

Now, we have "liaisons" to talk to ICE officials w/ instructions on our rights & our patients' rights, we no longer hold Saturday clinic, & no OT allowed for hourly employees. What matters here is less what "most voters" feel, but rather what senators and representatives are hearing from the people who contact and influence them. These institutions are *huge* parts of state economies. For example, UAB is the biggest employer in Alabama, by some estimates.

Without the negotiated indirects they lose money. They need to cover IRB, maintain labs, data security, admin support etc.

Indirects are calculated by a formula submitted to the US government by each institution and are set so universities can cover costs. Without them, they lose money

I highly recommend considering a German University. I heard that a non-German can get a masters degree for very little money. I bet the undergraduate cost is also low. German Universities focus on academics and don't build gyms and football stadiums, I heard. Education will be better & cheaper?

That's a problem indeed. But it depends on the town. German universities are fairly uniform in the level of their BAs and MAs, so you can go to a smaller place (Munich is crazy expensive). For the PhD it matters more where you go, but there's a lot of funding for PhD students.
