This is a great explainer of just how much trouble NIH-funded scientists are about to be in. 😨

Well, I no longer has an administrative position at my current institution. This is allegedly due to cuts in administrative staff caused by the threats of changes to the indirect cost rate.

Does anyone know of GAL4s that drive expression in the oviduct? #drosophila @armstrongflylab.bsky.social @lesleynweaver.bsky.social @jocmcdonald.bsky.social

Y'all...there are 3,000 colleges and universities in the US and fewer than TWENTY (20) have taken a stand for higher education and academic freedom. I think they need a little reminder of our core values...don't you think? #standupwithus

🚨Georgetown University Law Center students are detailing which law firms have caved and which have stood up to the Trump regime. They have created this spreadsheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets... Please share widely.

UPDATE: Here's where we're at w/ NIH grant terminations: ❌ 429 NIH grants terminated* ❌ 137 related to HIV/AIDS prevention ❌ 27 on cancer ❌ 16 on Alzheimer's The full Airtable, thanks to wizardry of @noamross.net👇 *This is just what we know. There are certainly more we don't know about yet.

HEY DORK! Chin up! All is not lost. Reset. Do something today that brings you some joy. There is ALWAYS hope when we stand up together ❤️✊🏼

STAND UP FOR SCIENCE SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT! ☀️ Dr. Francis Collins will be speaking at Stand Up for Science in D.C. on March 7th! More speaker announcements coming soon, stay tuned! 👀☀️

Where will you be on March 7th? 👀 @standupforscience.bsky.social

BREAKING: We're sending an open letter to universities across the country, offering support and urging them to reject pressure to punish international students and faculty for exercising their First Amendment rights. Schools must hold firm against the Trump administration's censorship attempts.

Imagine DOGE opens your mail and finds your household electric bill. To eliminate this cost, they burn your house down without warning. Then they total up the bills that, as a homeless person, you will never again pay. On its website, DOGE boasts about the money it has saved you.

If you're in the US, considering Europe for your PhD, and you identify as a minority, I will chat with you and review any application documents you need 🧪

Folks, if you want to help protect science funding in this country, today is a really good day to call your US House Representative. A budget bill, likely filled with massive cuts, is going to the floor for a vote as soon as today.

1/ FOR EVERYONE LOOKING TO TURN YOUR ANGER INTO ACTION, here's some advice from a high-level staffer for a Senator.

NIH indirects case update: Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges. Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides: (I'm paraphrasing here)

New: DOGE's spending has been secret. No longer. My colleagues have uncovered it. www.propublica.org/article/doge...

Sorry, copyeditors. Wing imaginal 'disks', instead of 'discs' just looks so wrong. #drosophila #proofwoes

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said “wow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

Whoa, a lot to digest in this article. People being REclassified as probationary in Jan in advance of this directive. Ppl getting fired on a zoom call effective immediately with no severance?! Ppl with Director awards fired for poor performance?! It’s a bloodbath. Lawyers, do your thing.

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home 🧪🔬🧬 🏠 sciencehomecoming.com

next time you’re having imposter syndrome, just remember that you have more clinical experience than the HHS secretary plus the NIH director combined 🫣

For early folks, I'm going to be on @npr.org Morning Edition at 6:11 am eastern (and repeated through the am) talking about indirect costs.

BREAKING NEWS Court issued a NATIONWIDE TRO in the action brought on behalf of the AAMC, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the Association for Schools and Programs of Public Health, the Conference of Boston Teaching Hospitals, and the Greater New York Hospital Association.

Just got the dreaded email. University of Iowa is halting all NIH grant submissions. Losing a generation of scientists here will send the state backwards. What a travesty.

8 years ago @asbmb.bsky.social gave me +18 more trainees a crash course in advocacy for their DC Hill Day. With NIH slashing indirect costs effective immediately, university Govt Affairs teams will be swamped. Here's 10 tips for scientists contacting lawmakers +pics from Denver's 2017 Science March.

Organize your own! Book a room, order some food, and send some emails to your favorite science people to get calling. Copy and modify my NJ-specific slides here: docs.google.com/presentation... Copy and modify my handout here: docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Rutgers phonebank I helped organize got 25 people to call 3 legislators about NIH funding "pause." Most trainees and faculty were calling legislators for the first time ever, and said it was easier than expected! Happy to share resources if you want to get your lab/dept/student group to make calls.

AAUP statement www.aaup.org/report/again...

“Trump is acting like a king because he is too weak to govern like a president. He is trying to substitute perception for reality. He is hoping that perception then becomes reality. That can only happen if we believe him.” This by Ezra Klein struck me as a really important perspective.

I just heard the news that R Scott Hawley, meiosis enthusiast and founding Dean of the Grad School of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, passed away today. Such a loss for the science and education community. I will miss our zooms and his deep, deep wisdom

The antidote for despair is action ❤️ * Dial (202) 224-3121 * Enter zip code * Leave voicemail * Say “My name is ___, I’m a constituent in [town]. (If clinician/scientist, say so) “The NIH freeze harms research and patients and must be lifted immediately.” Be brief. Staffers tally all calls. Go! ✅

I suspect most of my followers know but this is a case where actual scientists calling Congress — both houses, both parties — and making a BIG stink FAST can possibly make a difference. Gonna make my calls as soon as I'm out of lab
