Going to sociology and psychology tends to humble physicists, because they find out just how complicated humans are. Going to economics makes them insufferable, because it confirms for them just how simple humans are.

Putin deals in threats, kompromat, and poison. Not bribes. Who needs money when you have assassins? Moreover, who needs bribes when you own the U.S. President, who currently controls the majority of your business?

If you want to defend free speech, do it by promoting an issue you care about that gets censored.

Right wing authoritarians always target education and you know that. In America, they've been targeting education for decades -- particularly the evangelical right. You just unwittingly provided them with some momentary cover and fun new vocabulary words that they could use on NPR.

I'm sure J.K. Rowling is really reassessing her views right now, free speech warrior that she is.

As we know, the right has always given such weight to credibility. I'm sure Trump will turn it all around if you just give him a call. Your commitment to balance over scope is your weakness, and the right wing "free speech" grifters exploited it. (It's also what kills your credibility on the left.)

It's hard to believe you're this naive. Your obsession with college students fed the hysteria. Now they're not only banning books, but entire concepts. You have always been part of the problem and your inability to see that is a testament to motivated cognition.

Dem politicians need to start getting arrested for stuff. The only way to gain trust is by credibility enhancing displays. If you say democracy is collapsing, you have to do the kinds of things one would do if that were the case.

You're actively endorsing bias, the very thing you people claim to care so much about. Maybe if you focused on reality rather than distorting it out of boredom, we wouldn't be here.

we are absolutely deluged with media about the world of faculty meetings and student protests at elite universities but know essentially nothing about the country's largest megachurches

At a certain point, MFQ just needs to join the trash bin of poorly devised questionnaires. "We tortured the questionnaire until the fit was okay, but it still doesn't explain behavior."

They weren't just silent... They were inviting academic speakers who were parroting sanitized versions of right wing attacks on academia to give talks to their donors... Many of the folks who are now scared were complicit.

The racists revel in plausible deniability. It's all about being in on the joke. It's like when racist white guys call Black people "Canadians". It sounds innocuous, albeit odd to someone who isn't in the know, but their buddies know what word they really mean.
