Sad to hear. But what a life. And arguably his best years came after he stopped being president

Sure one of the best views there is after take off

My piece for @the-independent.com on Peter Mandelson becoming our next ambassador to Washington. Risky? Maybe, but overwhelmingly a smart move

www.cnn.com/2024/12/11/p... Suspect that facial expression captures his mood

“Assad’s men surrendered and walked away with barely a shot fired - 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 how brittle this regime was.” In an emergency episode, The News Agents discuss the geopolitical impact of Damascus falling into the hands of rebels. @lewisgoodall.com @jonsopel1.bsky.social

"Jubilation and euphoria now. but what next? What about the hard yards of actually governing this country?" Despite the liberation of Syria from the brutal Assad regime, its future remains uncertain

"The seeds of its own impending implosion." Journalist @carolecadwalla.bsky.social of The Observer describes the "crisis" caused by the sale of the publication to Tortoise Media, calling it a blow to her defence of mainstream media.

"Nobody in Syria wants a regime like in Afghanistan. We want to see a genuine representative democracy." Why the cousin of Bashar al-Assad believes removing HTS from the UK's terror list would be a mistake

Momentous events in Syria this morning. The 54 year rule of the Assad family appears to be over, with rebel forces taking to state TV claiming President Assad has fled Damascus. The prime minister has said he will hand over power to the opposition and has called for elections.

Astounding news from Syria overnight. But what a price the world - and not just the region - has paid for Assad’s determination to cling on: a refugee crisis that jolted European politics and still does, Obama faltering over red lines etc etc

“He’s talking to the men who he thinks will rally around him, he can say: Guys, if you don’t back me up - you’re going to be next.” Emily and Jon discuss Gregg Wallace’s “dog whistle” social media statements.

What do you mean you haven’t ordered your tickets yet….?! 😉

What a grievous loss for the BBC and us the audience. Brilliant journalist, and such a fine person and role model www.bbc.com/mediacentre/...

Lose to Ipswich at home two weeks ago. Beat Man City away 4 nil. Oh the joy of being a Spurs fan #COYS

And so Matt Gaetz withdraws. It was kind of inevitable. But does this embolden senators to go after other wacky nominees?

“It’s not just farming, it’s civil liberties. We’ve got people locked up for tweets and paedophiles walking the streets.” @lewisgoodall.com talks to farmers protesting Labour’s inheritance tax plans outside Parliament.

@thenewsagents.com now has an official domain. Something tells me I’m not the only digital person sorting that this week.

From 2026, anyone inheriting farm assets worth over £1 million will have to pay 20% tax, interest free, over ten-years. For farmers, it's "the straw that broke the camels back"

🥇🚨 Top of the Pods 🥇🚨 @thenewsagents.com latest pod is the top episode in the Apple charts… & @thesportsagents.bsky.social is the number one sports show! Well done @maitlis.bsky.social @lewisgoodall.com @jonsopel1.bsky.social Gabby and Chappers! 👏

Hope to see you here on December 2. Great cause, lovely church and always a beautiful service……

The footwear tells you this isn’t a normal protest marching on Whitehall #farmersprotest

There’s an excellent breakdown of free speech absolutism by @lewisgoodall.com in this one.

A word on the Allison Pearson free speech row, and what she describes as a ‘Kafkaesque’ threat to it. We asked her on @thenewsagents.bsky.social to discuss. She said: ‘No. And if you get any aspect of the story wrong my lawyers will be watching.’ Gotta love a free speech warrior 🤷🏻‍♂️

Umm. This is like first day at school. I’ve joined up
