🧵 I was at the velodrome outside Warsaw for some track cycling and decided to have some fun with phyphox. I turned on the accelerometer and put the phone in my pocket. Below is the acceleration in the y-coordinate as a function of time. As we can see, we get a nice wavy pattern, where each wave

This is not just a tragedy for the scholars now stranded, but for the trust in the US as a partner for anything. I guess from now, anyone dealing with the US will demand payment up front.

This is so true! After *counting fingers* 18 years in PL I’m just coming to terms with the fact that I can’t really say I’m here temporarily anymore.

So much for reducing government waste. It’s transparently obvious that it’s just a way to remove programs they don’t like.

I reiterate:

For a second I thought that this was a new live-action version of Shrek.

The 8th launch of a Vostok brought Yuri Gagarin into orbit. The Saturn V brought humans to the moon on the 6th launch. The 8th launch of this thing brought everyone a huge tax-funded lightshow.

The situation for academia was complicated enough as it was; if even running grants can be terminated at any time, who’d want to work in science. US science thrives on attracting talent globally, but with this, everything is up in the air.

In Poland we've had our share of politicians packing the constitutional tribunal with sycophants and it's eroded the present court's reputation so that hardly anyone cares about its rulings. Its one saving grace is term limits. Judges are appointed to a single 9-year term. Limits long-term damage.

personally would not describe the myth of a man cursed to roll a rock uphill FRUITLESSLY FOR ALL ETERNITY as “a reminder that you can overcome anything” but you do you, meta ad

Good and unexpected news.

I always liked the German names of “basic” elements. Stickstoff - suffocating stuff, nitrogen Sauerstuff - sour stuff, oxygen (they thought oxygen was part of all acids) Wasserstoff - water stuff, hydrogen Kohlenstoff - coal stuff, carbon

The Polish names of the elements always look strange to me. They don’t have the -ium ending, making some of the very short and awkward, like osm and itr. But more kiurious is element 96, curium or kiur. The spelling is weird and doesn’t give much hint to the origin of the name being… 1/2 #chemsky

Dear Media: Halting all aid to Gaza is not "pressuring Hamas." Collective punishment is a war crime. Starvation as a weapon of war is a war crime. Withholding medical care is a war crime. None of this is remotely controversial actually. Israel is doing war crimes, not "pressuring Hamas."

Imagine that we‘re back to the point that this needs to be said and you get applauded for it. It’s Groundhog Day again, throwback to March 2022.

I knew I shouldn’t have used that @!*$# AI!

NEW: A searing editorial in the The Kyiv Independent. “It’s time to say it plainly. America’s leadership has switched sides in the war. The American people have not, and they should speak up. “A president just disrespected America in the Oval Office. It wasn’t Zelensky.” @kyivindependent.com

I couldn’t not think about Johnny Cash when hearing Zelenskyy’s answer. “I'd love to wear a rainbow every day […] Until things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black” genius.com/Johnny-cash-...

Your dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President Zelenskyy. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.

Well, at kudos to Zelenskyy who couldn’t let these malevolent nincompoops spread their lies unopposed.

Pretty cool visuals of what goes on inside a synchrotron www.ansto.gov.au/news/photogr...

This here! I am just in awe of the self-restraint of people who can talk to trump for three minutes without a meltdown.

It's not like Muslims, Palestinians, Israelis, or virtually _any_ other nation, tribe or group have been saying this for-fucking-ever! But now liberal Americans feel it, so it's gotta stop.
