A ray of solidarity and sunshine in amongst an otherwise awful story: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

❗❗❗ former leader of Reform UK in Wales has appeared in court accused of accepting bribes in exchange for making statements in the European Parliament that would benefit Russia, a court has heard www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

JUST IN: NASA says there's now a 3.1% chance an asteroid will hit Earth in 2032, up from 2.6% yesterday. This is the highest risk assessment an asteroid has ever received, surpassing 2.7% in 2004

Why are sections of establishment opinion not only waking up to Labour's counter-productive positions, but are fretting about it?"

More of the approach that's never worked once in political history: screaming "we're racist!" at the far right in the vain hope that people *who despise you* will switch from more racist parties, without your horrified base switching to less racist ones. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

We revealed Nigel Farage’s voting record to his constituents in Clacton. They weren’t happy.

"Reform voters won’t think: ‘Ah! Labour are serious about immigration. We no longer have to vote Reform.’ …Why vote Labour when you can have the real thing?" @mrjohncrace.bsky.social nails why Labour's display of inhumanity is as ineffectual as it is despicable. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

New: When Do Parties Lie? Misinformation and Radical-Right Populism Across 26 Countries "...we find that radical-right populism is the strongest determinant for the propensity to spread misinformation. Populism, left-wing populism, and right-wing politics are not linked." doi.org/10.1177/1940...

LONG THREAD: Okay, let's break down a few things, both about ID cards and Labour's ill-advised tactics on "fighting Reform". First off, I personally don't think ID cards would work in UK, because we are objectively bad at things like this, but they work elsewhere so this isn't about them per se. 1/

Ooops, hahaha, he's not wrong you know. That is Millwall's away strip – not Plymouth at all!

This is so utterly obvious that when Labour *refuses* to do this, it behoves us to ask why.

This is ghoulish from Labour. Using people's suffering to try and appease Reform, which is something no-one will ever go far enough for. Labour has the potential to actually be doing something to reduce hostility. Instead they are stoking anti-migrant attitudes just like the Conservatives did.

Look what I saw today! @needhibhalla.bsky.social @dereklowe.bsky.social

Ideology will shape the questions scientists ask. It's counterproductive to think otherwise. But the minute it's allowed to shape the answers, we are not doing science anymore.

Great read this…

Latest Hiding in Plain Sight column for the Nation. Document every misdeed. Document every outrage. Make sure these people do not get to define this and future chapters in US history on their terms. www.thenation.com/article/poli...

This is quite a graph (although it is important – as ever – to read the note at the bottom). But still, taken with GDP per capita, it speaks to the UK's inequality

Personally if there was a discussion on whether I'd just performed a Nazi salute I'd probably avoid saying that it's a bad thing that academics were writing about antisemitism in the 1940s.

I actually now really want to visit this coffee shop to savour the "aromas …form places only eyes can do justice"!

The last moonwalk began #OTD in 1972. No one has set foot on the Moon since Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt, 52 years ago today. 🧪 🔭 🧑‍🚀 Images: NASA

Another reminder: Respiratory infections spread mainly through the air. That’s why they affect the lungs. Masks, worn correctly and consistently, reduce the spread of respiratory infections. Respirators work better than masks. Washing hands isn’t wrong, but it won’t stop airborne transmission.

You know you’re overstretched when your desk looks like this by 9am!

Here’s what Renoir & Monet saw one day in 1869 when they sat side-by-side to paint the scene at La Grenouillère, a popular meeting, eating & boating spot on the Seine ~ Renoir's emphasis on pleasantness contrasts with Monet's vibrant treatment of the water www.artinsociety.com/floating-ple...

1. The implicit deal behind Starmerism was this: you might not like what he stands for (or fails to stand for), but at least he knows how to win elections. If you want the Tories out, he’s your only hope. But now? It’s as if he’s going out of his way to lose in 2029. 🧵

Starmer’s incendiary nonsense about immigration being "off the scale" reminds me of Thatcher claiming the country was “swamped” by people with, err, “other cultures”. Dog whistle politics then, dog whistle politics now. You don’t beat racism by joining in with it! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

As someone who lives in the shadow of the A12, thanks to all who tried so hard to stop this urban motorway madness

May yet come to nothing (let’s hope) but the #H5N1 warning lights keep flashing. Interesting thread…

When I was 5, I loved science, which I took to be planets and magnets and chemicals and shit. Soon I realized science was a collective human activity, and these were just the objects of its attention. Anyway, whenever I read an OpEd on how science isn't political, I think "Are you 5 years old?"

Half a year to wait but this book looks fascinating (& it’s a great cover too!)

🧵SALT🧵 It's been snowing in the UK and the road gritters are out in force, begging the question: Have you ever wondered where that grit actually COMES from? The answer is more magical, beautiful and fascinating than you probably realised. 1/14

“Behind the laudable slogan there’s a morass of conspiracy theories” His three most dangerous ideas: 1. Anti-vaxer views 2. The “benefits” of raw milk 3. Anti-pharmaceutical conspiracy theories Great piece from @profdevisridhar.bsky.social https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/nov/17/ro…
