👋 I'm Aaron. Laravel developer, database educator, conference speaker, YouTuber, and dad to two sets (!!) of twins! I'm the cofounder of Try Hard Studios. We make videos that developers want to watch. Here are some things we've made recently 👇

Who is the Zynga of atproto? Who is making the next viral FarmVille for Bluesky?

Oracle justified its JavaScript trademark by claiming Node.js — now it wants that ignored #FreeJavaScript deno.com/blog/deno-v-...

I'm incredibly excited to announce that we've partnered with @fractaledmind.bsky.social to produce our first course on Ruby on Rails. Sponsored by @hatchbox.io and @honeybadger.io, High Leverage Rails is an in-depth video course on Rails + SQLite for beginners. Coming in February!

I find people can struggle coming to Livewire from Inertia/Vue. See my responses to @marty.friedel.au below on why I think that is. TL;DR - Livewire components don't work the same way as you'd expect. And also Inertia/Vue might just suit you better, so it's great Inertia and Livewire both exist!

Astro 5.1 is now in session Introducing Astro.session, an experimental utility to share data between requests. This is for you PHP lovers. See what else we launched 👇 astro.build/blog/astro-5...

`margin-block: 1lh;` is such a better default for paragraphs of text than `margin-block: 1em;` I highly recommend it.

As 2024 starts to wrap up, we decided to take a look back at a busy year. Check out our Tailscale Wrapped post for all the details, milestones, and maybe even some inspiration

Today we saw a wild black bear during a spiritual retreat. It came down looking for food and grabbed a garbage bag to go.

Found the Hogwarts Legacy sale last minute and bought it without thinking twice. First ~30min gameplay is really good, although Switch graphics aren’t the best, but really enjoyable nonetheless 👍

Will be doing PoE to simplify wiring. At the camera end, as they do not support PoE, I’ll put some PoE splitters. Longest run is ~37m away (not straight line) from where my router currently is. Not too far away tbf.

Parents in law also took a chance with the Black Friday deals. They bought some security cameras, and now I’ll be wiring it all. Also, found out I can proxy them to HomeKit (they do not support it natively) and have 10 days of recordings in the cloud. Good stuff

His arrival has been fulfilled

Black Friday deals came right on time. Just ordered 6 more switches. * 4x 3-gang * 2x 2-gang

First Matter device in my hands, a Sonoff Smart Light Switch. It’s way snappier than the smart light bulb that wife bought, and it being “Matter”, I can actually use it with HomeKit, so HomePod can control lights without any problems. Think I’ll buy 6 more to fill first floor.

🌠 So let’s say you want to use a modern CSS feature like container queries. According to caniuse, the feature is at 93% support. Is that good enough? How do we evaluate this number? I dig into this question in my brand-new just-published blog post, “A Framework for Evaluating Browser Support”. 🎉

As of Chrome 131 you have more options to style `<details>` and `<summary>`. You can now use of the `display` property on these elements, and also use a `::details-content` pseudo-element to style the part that expands and collapses. developer.chrome.com/blog/styling...

First time visits to the new house, we made some “Carne Asada” 🥩. Loving the feeling to finally have people over in “my house” ❤️

i think it’s not that “choosing a server” is confusing to non-technical folks — it’s more that it does not have the same kind of consequences as on mastodon. on mastodon, choosing a server is like choosing where to build a house. on bluesky, choosing a server is like choosing an internet provider.

Let's build together go.bsky.app/CUmM1XS

I just updated github.com/ericclemmons... with all the Starter Packs I could find in @gergely.pragmaticengineer.com's thread below 👇

Last year, in an attempt to escape from Twitter, I tried Mastodon, but the UX didn't click for me. Then a Bluesky invite showed up. It was the Twitter clone I was looking for. I started crossposting as a hedge, I even started sending invites of my own. I was all in. Then I went back to Twitter.
