Honestly, I don’t either. But it’s a super popular sub-genre, and I have gaming experience, so I thought maybe it’d be worth a try. The best explanation I’ve heard for the popularity is that it’s this era’s version of sword & sorcery power fantasies like Conan.

Specifically, I was thinking that the MC would be native to the fictional world (as opposed to a character from our world who is sucked into a virtual world or whatever). Like how the Tarnished in Elden Ring is aware of grace and runes and stuff, but most other NPCs aren’t.

My series, Apocryphon of the Unstar, is finally complete. The first book, The Warplands, is about siblings in a cursed wood and a witch hunter. www.amazon.com/dp/B09KZFGDMG

I mean, there is a pretty straightforward solution to that. He just needs to pull a Leroy Jenkins

Also, earlier this year, a New York times columnist on TikTok responded to my comment and sold me a shirt. 🤔

I try to think of each project as a brick. There are no successful (or failed) bricks. The bricks are just bricks. The goal is a wall.

Well, the reason I ask, isn’t about running away. If they are conscious and can still talk/interact/plan/have flashbacks/create drama, then I’d just cut back and forth between the fight and the prisoners.

What is incapacitating them? (Sorry for all the questions, I’m just trying to get a clear mental picture)

Are the captured PCs incapacitated? Like, are they in a cell or something (where they can move and talk) or are they frozen in a block of ice?

I don’t understand the question. Are some of the PCs captured and others free? Why would you need to roll new characters?
