Majority of universities now have only four options: 1. Specialise, shrink, give yourself a skinnier USP; 2. Federate, group together with regional partners; 3. Merge, as a uni with less-bad finances absorbs one or two others; 4. Go for training, become an FE and apprenticeship hub.

More and more people want to study Engineering at university. But UK universities can't afford to teach them. Good luck with your long-term growth, you idiots. 🤡 wonkhe.com/blogs/more-e...

I’m glad Labour is supporting these workers, who are at risk of losing 400 jobs. Would be nice if they were also supporting university workers, where 10,000 jobs are at risk. In the first week of February alone 1,000 job cuts were announced. Nothing from Labour at all in response.

BBC News on hour reporting straight that Trump has got rid of military chiefs because ‘they’re too mired in woke culture’ 🤯🤯🤯 Traditional liberal democratic media still hasn’t learned how to report on authoritarians, even now when it’s almost too late

We need to re-emphasise the idea that politicians going abroad to slag off this country to foreigners in return for money or prestige is a shameful thing to do. Because even though I would guess 75% of normal people instinctively understand this, certain others do not.

Two Weeks In The Death Spiral Of Cardiff University, by an anonymous academic. This is truly shocking read. The Cardiff executive board should hang their heads in shame. voice.cymru/two-weeks-in...

I’ve said to a few people that I feel like Trump’s statements on Ukraine, and by virtue the split from traditional allies in Europe and potentially building of relations with Russia, will be this generations Berlin Wall moment.

Implications of the end of NATO for Europe facing Russian aggression,.

Estonia’s Foreign Intelligence Service reports that Russia is expanding its armed forces in a way that prepares for a potential future war with NATO. ukdefencejournal.org.uk/intelligence...

I'm less concerned about normal peoples reaction than that of the politics It seems many are in shock and denial. We are seeing our entire security and foreign policy strategy since 1945 collapse. NATO is quite possibly done. The US is no longer reliable. Multilateral action done. A new world

Trump could have pushed for an end to the war in Ukraine without becoming actively hostile to Ukraine. Instead, he has imbibed Putin’s lies. Have written about the emergence of a new US/Russia axis, where it comes from and the staggering implications for Europe. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

This. There are really severe pressures on low-income households/those on working-age benefits)some renters. And widespread and serious destitution. But this is driven by *policy* (especially benefit cap/LHA/2CL) not "inflation", and is not a generalised "cost of living crisis".

The reason why we need to spend more money on 'bombs and guns' is because Russia is trying to remake the borders of Europe by force and people who live in Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland and the Baltic states have as much right to live freely as you do.

Want to go visit the national parks this year? Sorry. The reservation system is shut down, EMT personnel are gone, so don't get hurt or lost. No one can clean the bathrooms or cabins, so they'll be closed. Rangers are fired. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

Move fast and break things or be nice and fix things...tough choice

My district council has a new draft plan. Can I find it anywhere? No, I cannot. The website is like some kind of choose your own adventure, trying to find the right way of navigating. The news story of the new plan, gives a link to the agenda of the next cabinet, but no actual link to the plan.

As was inevitable, the Welsh Government has intervened to stave off the possible collapse of its university sector. There's quite a bit of extra money, but note that it's for estates and new tech - signalling more mergers and redundancies ahead. (1/2) www.timeshighereducation.com/news/cash-st...

UK universities contribute over £265 billion to the UK economy annually There were 240,420 academic staff & 398,170 total staff (FT & PT) employed at UK universities in 22/23 Screaming into a void though, if only we weren't all lazy woke feminist Marxists trying to destroy the brains of the young

The Welsh university system is in such dire straits. For a small, mostly rural country that needs economic growth, and is trying to build a sense of itself, that's a disaster. Yet the whole reaction (unlike steel) is like *shrugs shoulders, whatever*. I don't get it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Crystal clear perspective on the lines that are being drawn vis a vis US/Europe open.substack.com/pub/adamtooz...

The fall in international student numbers is putting fragile university finances under further pressure. The Observer reports a new study from @britishfuture.bsky.social showing most of public would not want to see a drop in students to cut immigration numbers www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Tristram Hunt's proposal should be no-brainer for any government strapped for cash to spend on key public services but that doesn't want to trash UK arts and culture. But headline is horribly misleading - he's proposing a tourist tax/hotel tax *not* charging for museums! www.ft.com/content/2175...
