In libraries, we call this vocational awe. The idea that if you are invested in your calling, you should accept low wages/inhumane conditions is a nasty little trick of capitalism. I’m an author, I’m hungry, I care deeply about my work, AND I deserve to be paid for it.

It's very easy to be chill about an interview for a promotion when you don't think there's a chance in hell that you'll actually get it. But when you find out you're one of the preferred candidates? That's when the anxiety really takes the wheel. I'm going to be a mess until Tuesday afternoon.

It's kind of funny, being a Canadian watching, "No kings," becoming a rallying cry in the USA because, like, we have a king. He's got basically no power and almost entirely a ceremonial title, but like, there is 100% a King of Canada. Our king has less power than even the lamest duck President.
