1/4. On the White House’s theory, if they abduct you, get you on a helicopter, get to international waters, shoot you in the head, and drop your corpse into the ocean, that is legal, because it is the conduct of foreign affairs.

1. Truth Social, Trump's social media platform, announced an audacious scheme yesterday to profit from Trump's tariffs Truth Social will offer actively-managed INVESTMENT ACCOUNTS composed of stocks in companies who benefit from Trump's policies It's a jaw-dropping conflict of interest

Sen. Cory Booker has the floor.

The incompetence of this Administration never ceases to amaze. Waltz and other NSC members used Gmail to conduct official government business, with Waltz’s staff even sharing information about sensitive military positions and advanced weapon systems tied to an ongoing conflict.

A federal judge in Maryland ordered federal agencies in 19 states, including Oregon, and the District of Columbia to reinstate thousands of probationary workers who were fired as part of White House adviser Elon Musk’s government-slashing agenda.

President Trump's new executive order ends collective bargaining for wide swaths of federal employees, as part of his broader campaign to reshape the government's workforce. Unions are vowing to sue.

Since January, SpaceX has received over $560 million in government contracts—an amount projected to surpass $2 billion in taxpayer funding by year’s end, averaging roughly $6.1 million per day. Follow the money and see where it goes.

“The zeal with which these guys are engaging in increasingly open, authoritarian behavior is unlike anything [we’ve] seen. Erdogan, Chavez, Orban — they hid it.” But it’s an illusion to think this all happened overnight. The judicial path was prepared for 50 years www.nytimes.com/2025/03/20/w...

A court finding that the Trump administration did not comply with an earlier order and a recent statement by Vice President JD Vance have some experts warning of a potential constitutional crisis.

The ‘American First’ crowd is awfully quiet about Trump’s pledge to build free housing for 2 million Palestinians in some random country they don’t want to go to that also doesn’t want them. I’m sure this will all work out fine and that’s what people thought they were voting for.

We can’t let a mega rich dude shut down the main foreign aid program created and funded by Congress just because he doesn’t like it and has our president by the balls www.foreign.senate.gov/imo/media/do...

Apparently naming the six unqualified college students currently taking a wrecking ball to USA is not just a "crime," per Elon, but a violation of Twitter's rules. [exhasutedly] Elon is a free speech absolutist/who knows what his politics are. www.wired.com/story/elon-m...

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

1,100 EPA employees have been notified of imminent termination.

There is simply no plausible argument that the president has the constitutional authority to refuse to spend appropriated funds because he doesn’t like how the money is being spent. The legality of policy impoundments is just not a close question.

John Ratcliffe has a record of ignoring the law, misrepresenting basic facts, and has shown he's willing to do or say whatever will please Donald Trump. Pretty much the opposite of what you want in a CIA director. I'll be voting no on his nomination.

"'He is now a communications director covering the same area that he scammed. It's almost laughable.... It's an eyebrow raiser. It's a head shaker. It's like, what the hell is he [Congressman Rulli] thinking?'" www.cleveland.com/open/2025/01...

Oregon on Tuesday joined a growing list of Democratic-led states suing the Trump administration over its efforts to roll back birthright citizenship in the country.

This order is unconstitutional and un-American.

PEN is offering emergency assistance to writers in crisis at this horrible moment, including trans and nonbinary authors. Here’s the app page. @penamerica.bsky.social pen.org/us-writers-a...

A nurse or a firefighter in Philomath, Oregon doesn't get to pick and choose if they pay their Medicare taxes. On day one Trump will have a billionaire Treasury Secretary that plays by a different set of tax rules than the rest of us.

My message to Zuck

We are facing a moment when much will change for the worse, not just in policy, but in the structure of politics itself. We need to be imagining a better America. A Shadow Cabinet would be a positive form of opposition. snyder.substack.com/p/shadow-cab...

With all the talk about Judge Merchan’s plan to impose a sentence without jail time or fine & with an unconditional discharge on January 10, I’d urge him instead to condition Trump’s discharge on obeying the presidential oath he will take on January 20. That’s a promise we know Trump won’t keep.

Jeff Bezos never wanted this cartoon to become public. He killed it, and as a result, pulitzer prize editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes quit. Make sure everyone sees this cartoon.

A train bridge over the Marys River in Corvallis collapsed on Saturday, sending one train car filled with agricultural materials into the river.

BREAKING: Federal appeals court in New York has upheld the E. Jean Carroll verdict against Donald Trump. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Donald Trump’s 2024 Christmas Day Message to America ended by referring in all caps to his critics, foreign and domestic, and writing: “MAY THEY ROT IN HELL. AGAIN, MERRY CHRISTMAS!” The man who wrote those words will take (and thus defile) the Oath of Office as President on January 20, 2025.

A fair question.

“As a result of information gathered by subpoenas, we know the extent to which the Supreme Court is mired in an ethical crisis of its own making.” www.cnn.com/2024/12/21/p...

Why the "Mump Regime"? For a new world we need new words. Facing the coming Musk-Trump regime, it will not be enough to rely on the standard terms ("administration," "presidency", and the like). That normalizes the abnormal. snyder.substack.com/p/why-is-mus...

Trump was indeed found guilty of “insurrection” after a 5-day civil trial by a Colorado court, and the state’s highest court affirmed by a 4-3 vote in Dec 2023. SCOTUS could have but did not disturb that finding or hold the process defective in any respect.

"The strong economy and tight labor markets that Biden has overseen have dealt workers their best hand in decades." From @brycecovert.bsky.social: newrepublic.com/article/1892...

Say goodbye to your smile and say hello to polio - that's what's on the horizon if Robert F. Kennedy Jr. becomes the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

#POTUS noted that Trump is inheriting a strong economy. 🇺🇸 Biden shifted the U.S. economy from 40 years of supply-side economics that had transferred about $50 trillion from the bottom 90% to the top 1% and hollowed out the #middleclass. @hcrichardson.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

Republicans have used public concern about Social Security’s future solvency as a cynical excuse to demand cuts in benefits. But Social Security could easily pay everything it will owe to everyone for the next 75 years if the cap on income subject to SS taxes were eliminated. Let me explain.

DOGE is nothing more than two billionaires cosplaying as government officials. I’m all for making government for efficient, but these guys just want to slash resources for agencies that help working people. thehill.com/homenews/adm...

Nicolle Wallace, “As Tim Snyder author of On Tyranny puts it, quote, taken together, Trump's candidates constitute an attempt to wreck the American government.”

Bravo for @harrylitman.bsky.social’s selfless decision to resign the LA Times in protest. “The existential stakes for our democracy that Trump’s second term poses” make Soon-Shiong’s “currying favor with the President-elect . . . repugnant and dangerous.” harrylitman.substack.com/p/why-i-just...

This is what oligarchy is folks.

"Trump won the crucial blue wall states... by 231,000 votes? So if just 116,000 voters across those three swing states – or 0.7% of the total – had switched from Trump to Harris, it is the vice-president who would have won the electoral college … and the presidency" - me for the Guardian:

The key to preventing the worst kind of legislation from passing is to pressure vulnerable swing district GOP House members. All it will take is one or two defections! The GOP House majority is smaller than ever. Let’s paralyze it.

I’m going to try this. Wonder if they’ll recognize my voice.

Trump is flooding the zone with staggeringly bad nominees for key posts, each one worse than the last. He clearly figures he can overwhelm the already weak GOP resistance to the point where most if not all will get through, given Musk’s threat to fund primary opponents to all who say no way.

This is both thoughtful and alarming. Years ago when I read his book “On Tyranny” I thought he was an extreme alarmist but now, sadly, his words are all too true…
