Great piece @fferrando.bsky.social on the need to "proletarianise the fight against climate change". He highlights governments' response to the gas crisis was "to establish temporary aid for consumers; not to change the poor functioning market that allows fossils to set the price of all energies."

In Lincolnshire, Reform mayoral candidate Andrea Jenkyns is pledging to stop solar & grid upgrades. Reform is gunning hard to win the May election. It bears repeating that climate breakdown is already costing Lincolnshire via heatwaves & floods, & could instead profit from being a renewables hub.

🔊"It is alarming that the UK is now following in the US’s footsteps and has accepted the false choice of cutting the already diminished UK aid to fund defence" 🔊Together with 137 INGOs in the UK, we have written an open letter to the PM and Treasury 🔊Read the letter www.bond.org.uk/press-releas...

Great framing by Miliband in the face of a right-wing media gunning against climate: "British people are paying for being stuck on a rollercoaster of global fossil markets controlled by dictators & petrostates. That's why we're sprinting to homegrown, clean energy." www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

Four years ago the government was poised to raise insulation standards on landlords, which would have come into force this year - but bottled it. As a result renters are going to feel this price rise the worst. Higher standards are back on the agenda but renters are looking at yet more cold winters

EU spends more on Russian oil and gas than financial aid to #Ukraine – report - Europe estimated to have bought €22bn of fossil fuels from Russia in 2024 but gave €19bn to support Kyiv www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

"Rather than securing affordable energy for its citizens, subsidising equity LNG risks shackling taxpayers to a legacy of costly, underperforming assets at a time when the market is poised for a significant downturn." www.energyflux.news/p/dismantlin...

The net zero economy grew 10% last year📈 so it's now worth over £80bn GVA and supports nearly 1 million jobs would be madness to advocate against net zero when it means growth & energy security according to a NEW report with analysis by CBI Economics: eciu.net/media/press-...

Useful intervention from 🇬🇧 National Infrastructure Commission on the need for a regulatory shake-up to align electricity DSOs plans with the clean power transition. "Investment costs could be cut if households became more flexible, reducing the level of peak-time demand." www.ft.com/content/933c...

Great work @citizensadvice.bsky.social @endfuelpoverty.bsky.social holding DNOs + Ofgem to account on profiteering. I wonder how much 💰 gas networks are also wasting on 'hydrogen ready' grids🤨 Spending should be assessed to ensure cost-effective alignment w climate plans. www.ft.com/content/68f8...

Sounds like it's time for Cyprus TSO to invest in the roll-out of batteries🔋 "Cyprus is facing an unusual situation where solar is being disconnected during the day due to excess production, despite potential evening power cuts caused by high heating demand." in-cyprus.philenews.com/insider/ener...

Energy prices are on the rise again in the UK - thanks to our dependence on burning fossil gas. Building out renewables, as well as grids & clean flexibility, is the way to go to protect households + industry from future gas price spikes. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

En la #SemanaContraLaPobrezaEnergética, compartimos este artículo de @fferrando.bsky.social  sobre la necesidad de impulsar reformas que no dejen a nadie atrás y que garanticen que la energía es un derecho

Equinor & its trading arm have been fined €12m by the French energy regulator for gas market manipulation during annual auctions between France & Spain, with an aim to "congest" the market 🤨 www.cre.fr/actualites/t...

Useful to see from @rspb.bsky.social & the University of Cambridge: well-managed solar farms can make an important contribution to nature as well as "provide relief from the effects of agricultural intensification". www.bbc.com/news/article...

Listen to my brilliant colleague @duygukutluay.bsky.social and learn about how the energy transition is happening all over Europe and why local communities must be at the heart of it!

Successful rollout of solar panels could lift 1.2 million people in UK out of fuel poverty, & help decarbonise the UK’s electricity system In fuel-poor households savings from rooftop solar panels could reduce energy bills by 24% say @resfoundation.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/environment/...

In a move to address the lengthy grid connections queue, NESO plans to charge blocker projects £2,500 per megawatt. Charges would increase by £2,500 every 6 months, to a max of £10,000, if a project lingers too long💰 Interested how this compares with other countries? www.edie.net/neso-unveils...

🎭 A magician never reveals their secrets—but we just did. EPH’s “coal exit” looks like a ruse, shifting polluting assets to its sister company, but behind the scenes it's still turning dirty coal profits. Read our new research in partnership with Re-set: beyondfossilfuels.org/2025/02/12/b...

The UK gov is consulting on beefing up the powers of it's energy regulator - Ofgem - to be able to better hold energy companies to account & protect consumers. Great campaign action from @38degrees.bsky.social + @warmthiswinter.bsky.social 👇

I can’t believe it’s 2025 & we still have to write briefings about why hydrogen for heating is a terrible idea, only benefiting fossil incumbents 😅 Chris sets out the case excellently in this new post 👇

Great to see a major uplift in businesses supporting clean flexibility in Denmark. New players - including rice rinks, saunas & horticultural farms - are realising they can "both make money & contribute to ensuring balance in the green electricity system of the future."

Today we launched a new report on how data centres could derail the energy transition in Europe: new data centres risk increasing emissions in Europe - they must be powered by additional renewable energy or they must not be built 🤖⛽

We went to the #AIActionSummit today with an early Valentine’s message for Big Tech & industry execs: It’s time to dump fossil fuels. 👋 Powering data centres with fossil energy? Talk about a toxic relationship. We’re demanding a swift divorce, and a speed date with #renewables.

You don't beat the far right by becoming more far right. Between pandering to anti-immigration and failing (so far) to meaningfully challenge austerity or inequality, UKG is consolidating the exact conditions in which Farage & co thrive.

Given the media circus around nuclear & CCS, this is a timely analysis from BNEF that new wind & solar are already undercutting new fossil plants in almost every market globally. Cost of clean technologies are expected to fall further by 2-11% this year💰 about.bnef.com/blog/global-...

Good to see the UK gov finally confirm that from 2030. all private rented homes must be better insulated. However, action will be needed to ensure the 'affordability exemption' doesn't create a loophole penalising those who are worse off👇

Amazing to see 100+ civil society groups sign up to @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social & Green Web Foundation statement on AI & climate, calling for alignment with planetary boundaries 👇 Leaders should pay attention ahead of next week's AI Action Summit in Paris! greenscreen.network/en/blog/with...

AI is pushing our energy systems to the brink—& its reliance on #fossilfuels is only making things worse. Ahead of the #AIActionSummit, 100+ orgs, incl. us, are demanding action to phase #fossilfuels out of AI’s entire supply chain. Read the full statement here: greenscreen.network/en/blog/with...

Trouble with 15y capacity contracts for new fossil gas power plants: >2035 you're paying for something that will almost not run. How be sure that there won't be cheaper options? Annoted graph from @auroraenergy.bsky.social report for @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social 💡🔌 auroraer.com/wp-content/u...

Every euro spent on Russian fossil gas helps finance Putin’s war against Ukraine and locks Europe further into a destructive fossil energy system. The EU cannot claim to support Ukraine while bankrolling Putin’s war machine with its gas purchases. #StopFossilGas

Nice piece @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social report on Polish capacity market. Filip Piasecki @auroraer.bsky.social says 🇵🇱 "must shift from fossils to flexibility. Otherwise, for decades we will subsidize gas plants, which may be unprofitable much earlier than expected" biznesalert.pl/polityka-ene...

No gas plants were contracted at Poland's last capacity market auction - with the economics of storage winning over fossils. However, 🇵🇱 is now looking to run an extra auction. It will be open to all, but "parameters will be changed to advantage gas plants" 👀 www.energy-storage.news/poland-capac...

After Russia triggered the last energy crisis, it's hard to fathom how reopening flows of Russian gas into Europe could be seen as a better option than investing in homegrown renewables. Well summed-up by an official: “It’s madness. How stupid could we be to even think about that as an option?”

Breaking: Uplift welcomes a very sensible decision from the Court of Session invalidating the decision to approve the Rosebank oil field. Rosebank is a disaster for the climate & will do next to nothing to create the prosperity & stability that the UK needs. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Many local grid operators (DSOs) are owned by utility companies, who can have vested interests when running the grid. Interesting to see the UK competition watchdog probe into Iberdrola's £2.1bn deal to buy North West Electricity Networks... ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/competi...

Pleased to see this from @jrf-uk.bsky.social: "a stronger economy [makes] little difference to the poorest UK households". Theirs isn't a #Degrowth message per se - but anything that shifts the focus from growth to public services & community is much needed. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/jose...

🚨 Competitiveness Compass is out 🚨 Commission takes a big misstep by framing regulation as an obstacle to competitiveness. It is not the rules protecting people, climate & environment that hold companies back, but the lack of investment & high energy prices driven by the EU’s fossil gas dependency.

UK heat pump sales increased 63% last year and 15% more people completed a recognised heat pump training qualification! This is great news in a sector which has taken a while to get going. 1/4 www.heatpumps.org.uk/record-year-...

Since 2015, capacity markets have contracted an eye-watering €53bn to fossil plants -- to be paid via a little known levy on energy bills in 🇮🇪, 🇧🇪, 🇵🇱, 🇬🇧, 🇫🇷 & 🇮🇹. 🧵Key findings from @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social new report...👇

España se encuentra diseñando la normativa sobre mecanismos de capacidad. Ahora vemos que, en Europa, se han priorizado los contratos para centrales de combustibles fósiles. Esperamos que España no siga ese camino 👇

Some European gas power plant owners are raking it in... Often you see gas power plants squeezing the markets pushing electricity prices sky-high. AND on top of those wholesale revenues, they CAPACITY MARKET revenues. €45 billion for gas power plants and €6 billion for coal since 2015🙂

Great report from @julietphillips.bsky.social and Beyond Fossil Fuels on cost of gas dependence and the need for new policies to create green energy back up and stop gas companies from profiteering during this transition

Nice coverage @beyondfossilfuels.bsky.social: "From Italians' pockets to gas plants: here's what happened to 15bn to compensate energy producers" ReCommon warn that 15 year contracts to gas plants mean citizens will continue to pay-out long into the future. www.ilfattoquotidiano.it/2025/01/28/d...
