Make sure the only card you use today is a library card! 📚 📜 #EconomicBlackout

This Georgia weather is about to make me pull out both wardrobes, I swear. We had snow last week, and today it got up to the 70's (F). (Obligatory acknowledgement of climate change making this way worse)

We're doing a fundraising drive for one more year of librarypunk. Hosting and recording costs money, and we'd really appreciate your support to keep the show going. Everything we make will continue to be free for all, but we wanted to offer ways for people to show their support.

I never pay attention to when our monthly birthday celebration is going on for our population, but the guys know I have a sweet tooth which results in a surprise slice of cake delivered to the library 🍰 I never expect it and I think that's part of this fun at this point 😂

One of my many “unofficial duties” is helping my facility find DVDs of movies / shows for classes, events, and what we call the “weekend loop.” There have been multiple times where I get a request and can’t find it anywhere for several months (if ever) because it’s only on streaming.

A fun story that #TLSky #Skybrarians must read to believe. Take a break from today's hellscape and find out what some fifth graders did when an educator was out for a day. #EduSky www.slj.com/story/newsfe...

"This ... cannot be viewed in isolation. More than anything, this ‘transformation’ – presented under the rhetoric of modernisation and AI-readiness – represents a troubling shift in the power dynamics between academic libraries and commercial providers, especially those who hold (near) monopolies."

There are two town halls scheduled for this. I encourage librarians affected by this decision to register and make your voices heard. I plan to attend both. 📚 discover.clarivate.com/pq-books-upd...

Washington Post is reporting that the US Gov't program to send free COVID tests to households will be shut down tonight, and the remaining tests destroyed. If you haven't already ordered yours in the latest batch (autumn 2024's) it's super quick & easy, price $0.00 covidtests.gov

Here's a messaging toolkit if people want to use it to create your own handouts to share with your communities. Thanks for sharing Anat.

If you are interested or want to plan a data rescue event, get in touch with us. While our work has been asynchronous out of necessity, we'd love to hear about other efforts and get you hooked up with others in the community who might have suggestions for activities. #DataRescue

Just know that if I don't see posts uplifting Black voices on your page, I'm judging you. 👩🏻‍⚖️ You should be reading books by #Blackauthors year round but ESPECIALLY during #BlackHistoryMonth. Sharing lists and reposting #Blackbooksky creators' content is not hard. #blacksky 🖤🤎 go.bsky.app/E53tMV9

Encyclopædia Britannica will continue to use ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons: -We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S. -The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous. 🧵⬇️

Starting the interview process tomorrow for our library to find a new aide. I have to admit, it is very strange being on this side of the process for once! 📚📜

Shout out to everyone going through the motions, calling our reps, doing the dishes, meeting with students, knocking out a review as we watch the constitution slip away, knowing full well we're not the first to live through a political crisis, but knowing it still hurts.

one must imagine Sisyphus surrounded by tortoises

This happened to me in Trump 1.0 when I called in and the dude said, “wow lots of calls about this issue today!” and I asked how many is a lot and he said “Seventeen!” Motivates me to pick up the phone every time.

Was assigned a reading on anti-racist pedagogy that now leads to an "error 404" page when a week ago it was up and functional. Brb, donating to Internet Archive as thanks for making it still accessible!

Part of the problem is that libraries are often understaffed and Collections don't often have time to sort through each individual title, relying on vendor lists or quick surface-level checks instead.

As issues like this become more prevalent, I am seeing a need to better understand AI as it will affect the work I do (at the very least to refine my skills in avoiding it where it's not wanted). What resources are you all using to do this better? 📚📜

Okay, pals. Time for action this month. We're going to do that by funding classrooms that are specifically seeking out Black history books. These classrooms are those that are in historically underfunded communities. These asks are from teachers whose students benefit directly.

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines. The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds. It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

I wonder if printing+sharing free zines in your work/study/etc place is an inexpensive way to share info re:basic human rights+resources you can't make official posters/programs about???? Starting this Black History Month by highlighting the life of Jerry Lawson. Jerry was one of few black engineers in the 70s and even fewer VIDEOGAME engineers, he has been referred to as the father of the home videogame console for his innovations on cartridges. www.biography.com/inventor/jer...

each time I feel myself starting to panic about this godforsaken country, I try to take action. The action itself brings calm, proving to my body that hope is a verb, etc. calling my reps takes minutes, for instance, & the 5 calls app makes it especially easy: apps.apple.com/us/app/5-cal...

The Trump administration has begun removing datasets from the CDC website. Said datasets have inconvenient facts and numbers that disagree with the Trump administration's positions. Rumors are that there'll be a major purge of data later today and/or this weekend. PubMed may be a target.

If you're a journalist downloading CDC data today, please consider filling out this form so we have a centralized guide to who has what. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Lots of datasets are disappearing from data.gov. This is a good time to preserve critical data stored with the .gov. This piece focuses on climate and environmental research and data, as well as diversity-related data. I've also talked to people who are worried about COVID data.

What a time to start this but tomorrow marks day 1 of my facility's first ever "Winter Reading Challenge"! It's been hectic, but I appreciate the opportunity to channel my energy into something I think genuinely helps promote literacy and build community 📚📜

Deep dive on decoding propaganda w/ critical reading skills. Read, save, share. I just subscribed to their newsletter, too. Some of the best guidance I've found for media literacy.

I wrote a thing! It's about what information literacy can and cannot offer in troubled times, and my hopes for the future.

let this bring a smile to yer grim mug. you deserve it

What can you do about book banning? How can you support essential public institutions of democracy like public libraries and public schools? Want to understand why "school choice" is an outright lie? I've got OVER FOUR YEARS of those answers and more in this pinned thread.

We barely paid the last propane bill... just in time for them to deliver again. So that's another $350 we desperately need. #HelpSky #MutualAid

When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests. We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason. ALSO.
