the most annoying thing about Thomas chatterton williams is that he only really exists because the atlantic is desperate for someone like him to exist. 1

Every time one of these reveals happens, I think about how the FBI put out a report **in 2006** warning that white supremacists were actively taking over US law enforcement organizations, and no one did a damn thing.

I'm the one in the middle.

Yet another reminder that businesspeople are manifestly unfit for elected office "Give us your minerals or we'll let Russia kill you all" isn't negotiating. It's extortion.

White Christian Nationalists "are not ‘good Christians’ tricked into going along with bad political values. Their bad political values have led them to Christianity." (via @polphilpod.bsky.social) www.liberalcurrents.com/trump-the-re...

Let me respond to a cluster of comments saying "MAGA can't be Christian because XX Bible verse says YY" OK, sure, but to quote Reverend Lovejoy, "The Bible says a lot of things"

Once again, invoking the @kenwhite.bsky.social Goat Rule.

There’s no evidence that Dan Caine will not be an effective chairman of the joint chiefs relative to his peers, but it is certainly saying something to the services that we are replacing a highly qualified black man with a white man who literally lacks the command qualifications for the job.

Pathetic. I'm seeing way too much of "Welp, I guess we just have to figure out how to deal with things," and far too little of "Dammit, we have to draw the line here." Living to fight another day only works if you actually end up in the fight.

I continue to find the ominous anti-phishing tags that get added to corporate email darkly amusing. My current favorite: "EXTERNAL SENDER - PROCEED CAUTIOUSLY" (in a garish red font)

And as @himself.bsky.social and @abenewman.bsky.social point out in their book and elsewhere, the negative effects will not be limited only to those technologies directly involved in the weaponization. This is potentially toxic to all US-identified businesses.

Thinking of this from Steven Jay Gould, which is especially apt in the context of our current xenophobia “I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein’s brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.”

Forget the legal requirements for the job of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Trump's only real requirements are (1) unquestioning loyalty to him, (2) not Black or a woman, and (3) a willingness to commit war crimes, if asked. wapo.st/4kpm6JV

The originalist case for a presidential cult of personality

The MAGA Movement in one, simple to understand comic strip.

1/US demands Ukrainian minerals or face cutoff from Starlink. It is the most venal form of economic coercion. And it will only accelerate the backlash to US tech platforms. Now Starlink = AWS = Facebook for friends and foes alike. www.reuters.com/business/us-...

Now why do you think the Trump/Hegseth brain trust would want to fire all the senior lawyers in each branch of military service?

This is quite significant in many ways: the overt thuggery, Trump’s barely suppressed fury at being contradicted by a woman, the governor’s standing up, the total abandonment of the pretense of federalism, the continuing use of trans Americans the way Hitler used Jews.

How can any current or former members of the US military support this administration?

One thing this little bleat from Chad “Damp Little Britches” Mizelle demonstrates is the duality of Trumpism: it’s about simultaneously being (1) a tough truth-telling masculine elbow-thrower and (2) as fragile as a porcelain goose. Bullies who can dish, but weep at the slightest pushback. Losers.

I generally try to keep my feed pretty PG, but I feel I just have to point out what a giant asshole this guy is.

Usually when states go to court alleging federal coercion in violation of the 10th Amendment there is not a literal video of the President doing it.

I think @kenwhite.bsky.social's Goat Rule applies here as well.

Doesn't know what AI is, doesn't know what duplicitous means, doesn't know what the CDC does.

It turns out that weakening security for good guys also weakens it for bad guys. www.bbc.com/news/article...

There are many mysteries and ambiguities in life but the nature of this gesture is not among them. It's a Nazi salute.

I will add folks obsessing about "high IQ people" to this list.

This Red Sox fan agrees.

The Silicon Valley series merged with real life and we're living in its latest season.

elon musk at cpac was so fucking weird you guys I know this reads like a parody but I literally just wrote down what happened www.theverge.com/elon-musk/61...

If you squint *really* hard, you can see a lesson about power in this tableau.

Russia and China can sit their starters for the rest of this game, I think. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/b...

We need a mass media campaign on the concept of regressive taxation, it seems.

Hearing folks talk about "rebuilding western civilization" gives me the same kind of queasiness as the use of the term "homeland."

Have we lost our collective short- and long-term memory? Have we become a nation of rubes?

Musk’s ROI on the purchase of the US government is over performing

Appeasing Russia will cost US Firms. Great piece @felixsalmon.com "As U.S. companies become increasingly viewed as a mask for U.S. power... the rhetoric surrounding them will move from complaints about fair competition to worries that they represent a security threat." www.axios.com/2025/02/20/t...

1. The Philadelphia Inquirer has 2 journalists - our chief political writer and foreign affairs columnist - in Germany for its critical election. A friend yesterday called us "a regional newspaper" but I'd say we're a historic legacy news org (with 23 Pulitzers)... www.inquirer.com/politics/ger...

Here's @bluestein.bsky.social's uncensored thread of the town hall held by Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA), in which an unhappy audience pushes back against DOGE cuts: threadreaderapp.com/thread/18927...

Elon Musk’s actions are leading Afghan refugees who fought alongside our soldiers and have escaped the Taliban to be evicted from their houses.

The waters are constantly being tested and Overton windows expanded.

What would @dicknixon.bsky.social say about this state of affairs in the GOP?
