the most annoying thing about Thomas chatterton williams is that he only really exists because the atlantic is desperate for someone like him to exist. 1

Really the most annoying thing is that, desperate for someone like him to exist, this is the someone like him they settled for. They apparently couldn't find a better someone like him, which is frankly an appalling indictment of the whole "someone like him" ecosphere.
he has one argument (as jbouie says) and he keeps writing it over and over, and places like the atlantic keep publishing it, because there's a massive hunger to tell white people that the problem is people criticizing their bigotry.
My (white) sibling is obsessed with him and after regularly reading all his pieces and feeds has started calling things like black people expressing love for black American culture “anti-white” now. Sorry to offload my personal experiences but I resent him deeply for this experience alone
Obviously it is her choice to go down that path but it’s deeply frustrating when she used to be a mostly normie lib and now has this type of writing to justify this kind of thinking
"maybe the trump admin is bad, but the real problem is that people clear their throat mildly when I announce that I think trans people should be rounded up and shot"
which is depressing. they have a lot of resources; they publish enough good people and good articles that it's clear they could consistently enlighten/educate/inspire readers if they wanted.
I will admit I'm impressed that he's so committed to the bit that he won't reconsider even as Trump resegregates the federal government and opens concentration camps.
That's the thing about TCW, they don't need him to exist when they already have Friedersdorf and at least 2-3 other perpetually "woke is why things are bad" writers, including the odd month for Tom Nichols.
If only one of these very reputable ancient publications had permanent roster spots for more valuable perspectives. But no, instead we get anti-anti authoritarians complaining about being complained about.

It's 40% of their staff.
