Canadian Makers and Manufacturers features an extensive list of Indigenous business people who are making a difference in Canada. manufacturedin.ca/products/ind... Really cool to see Saskatoon-based Nikihk, an Indigenous brand that offers eco-conscious household products. nikihk.ca

The same could and should be asserted here in Canada, where Jews and our very real fears are increasingly used as political footballs. Claiming to fight antisemitism while pitting Jews against other vulnerable groups does not actually make Jews safer.

Gender gap. Duh. But also wild. (Nanos data posted @338canada.bsky.social )

Just imagine, something real and concrete instead of endless restructuring, collapsing silos, re-creating silos, terminating executives & making severance payments, re-hiring executives ... #ableg #abpoli

Joining the voices of those gravely concerned about Bill 39, which provides the gov’t with extraordinary powers in deciding how legal services are funded in AB. This list of defunded organizations reeks of ideology and seriously interferes with A2J. Hands off! #albertalawfoundation #ableg

Excellent points made re the new Alberta Disability Assistance Program. As currently proposed, ADAP focuses on individual skills training, suggesting employment barriers are within a disabled person’s control, and not addressing society’s contribution to the systemic exclusion of disabled people.

The Alberta Gov't is in the process of passing legislation that undermines the independence of the Alberta Law Foundation & threatens the financial sustainability of Legal Aid Alberta. This article, from Jonny Wakefield, summarizes what's at stake: edmontonjournal.com/news/politic...

Important guidance on a neglected Charter freedom in "plain vanilla outdoor political protests." [30] Freedom of peaceful assembly advances collective democratic goals of self-government, truth seeking, and self realization and "empower[s] unheard, marginalized voices" [36, quoting Jamie Cameron].

Very, very proud of the Alberta Law Foundation for standing up to the UCP government. #ableg #abpoli

Earthquakes, right? "Induced seismicity" is about oil & gas industry produced earthquakes? And Alberta's regulatory regime is set up to only deal with one company after the shaking is over, and not everyone responsible before it happens? This sounds bad.

The case is set to be heard on May 21. There are many reasons Albertans should care about this lawsuit. One is that the cost of clean up after industry has finished extracting billions of dollars in revenue is going to fall on Alberta taxpayers. And it's a very big number.

@katyanderson.bsky.social: Corey Hogan emphasized his UofC administrative role in his campaign announcement, “yet as part of that role he has played a large part in the violation of students’ Charter rights & in making the campus he wants to represent less safe.” www.readthemaple.com/liberal-star...

Actually, were 2-3 just during my time at U of C, including one in 2008. Tent City was a pretty common thing done to protest for affordable student housing. Signed, a former Gauntlet Editor archive.thegauntlet.ca/2008/09/camp...

If the UCalgary facilities policy changed to ban encampments 20 years ago, why the panic to issue a "Direction" to ban temporary structures & overnight protest in April/May 2024 -- a Direction used to justify the trespass notice CPS relied on? The rules didn't change until the pro-Palestine protest.

One of many moments in Omar El Akkad’s new book, “One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This,” that will stop you in your tracks.

Or leave it to the ND candidate Keira Gunn - PhD in Mathematics. Hockey goalie. Looks good to me. Well organized. Lots of signs already. Perhaps the LPC shd just fail to nominate. I'd be good with that! Let's not split the progressive vote in #yyc confederation.

"they’re a stagnating mess desperate for someone to bail them out of their bad mistakes, trying to kick the can down the road one more time and pray that somehow that works" Perfect description for this out of touch, corrupt government

A tale for our times. Some bitcoin miners cut corners, act first & seek absolution later. And some oil & gas operators default on surface lease obligations or strip assets before turning the associated obligations over to the orphan fund. Sometimes, as here, the same people may be involved.

Just for the record, deeming smthg to be provincial property does not give it an immunity against valid federal legislation. The only property immunity in the constitution is immunity from taxation (s 125). An emissions cap statute is not a tax statute. #ableg, #abpooli, #canpoli

Premier Danielle Smith visited the University of Alberta Faculty of Law today. 👀 Lawyers and future lawyers know that Bill 26 and the UCP’s anti-trans bills are regressive, unconstitutional, and just plain wrong. And they had a message for her today. 👏

Lisa Young "As Cdns contemplate how to navigate our new circumstances, we must start by understanding that America is no longer a functioning democracy. The rule of law can no longer be taken for granted. We are not riding out four difficult years. Our old friend is, in all likelihood, gone" #ableg

Same as it ever was… (but now with a great quote from @drewyewchuk.bsky.social) #cdnpoli #ableg www.theglobeandmail.com/business/art...

I have spent time visiting with colleagues in Finland over the last twenty years. A large part of their response to living next to the Russian bear is to assiduously cultivate international connections. We have a bear of our own. We must do the same. This requires govt support & $$ #canpoli #abpoli

My colleague, Jared Wesley raises a valid concern here about creeping MAGA Ideology infecting new Alberta’s election policy. It’s a threat to a more inclusive democracy in our province. www.ctvnews.ca/edmonton/art...

A new @ablawg.bsky.social post by @roberthamilton.bsky.social, @jwatsonhamilton.bsky.social and me exploring the teachable moments in Dickson v Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, focusing on the SCC’s different reasons for finding the Charter applies (or not) to the VGFN. TLDR: Team Rowe on this one.

Bitcoin generators are the new scofflaws of the west. In this decision the Court grants a permanent injunction against an oil & gas company operating bitcoin generating facilities on a surface lease: Flowers v Persist Oil & Gas 2025 ABKB 142 (CanLII), <https://canlii.ca/t/k9xdv> #ableg #abpoli

When @jwatsonhamilton.bsky.social and I began a series of posts on the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act in 2020 we were critical of its breadth but this red zone was far beyond the hypotheticals we imagined. This UCP giveaway is troubling in the extreme.

From my colleague Saun Fluker on @ablawg.bsky.social "It is truly shocking how quickly the UCP cabinet gave away Alberta’s portion of the world’s longest undefended border, and created a quasi-military area now referred to as the red zone." #ableg #abpoli #canpoli

I don’t like official “days” - but this year, International Women’s Day hits a bit differently. So this year, instead of being an official “day” curmudgeon, as is my usual practice, I want to say this. I stand with all women who fighting for equality, resisting tyranny and longing for peace. #IWD

Confirmed: "RCMP have confirmed a set of human remains found in a landfill outside Winnipeg late last month are those of Morgan Beatrice Harris, one of four victims of a convicted serial killer." www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Beaver Lake Cree Nation progresses in an epic struggle for its rights. After 16 yrs of unwavering efforts, its rights claim is moving toward trial. A decision can’t come soon enough to transform land use relationships with #Indigenous #rights holders. tinyurl.com/4kev7r6s

The decision of Justice Bokenfohr in the matter involving Mraiche & Nathan Pike and the Breakdown is now available on CanLII. The decision dissolves the injunction originally granted against Pike & the Breakdown. Worth a read. #ableg #abpoli MHCare Medical v Pike www.canlii.org/en/ab/abkb/d...

Jeff Rath. Let's remember this name Alberta and Canada. Rath by name, Rath by nature. He and Trump are soulmates. They resonate. A Quisling. #ableg #abpoli

An example of using every tool available to undermine the credibility (& apparent recognition and respectability) of those who seek to destroy democratic institutions and the rule of law. #canpoli

In the calls to defend Canada, we’re getting a one-dimensional perspective: increased resource extraction & exploitation. But what if your #cdnpoli includes its wilderness, which sustains us & the good life we enjoy here? Thanks @wcscanada.bsky.social for this piece: thenarwhal.ca/opinion-worl...

The delayed @ucalgary.bsky.social response to a Freedom of Information request for correspondence between UCalgary & the Calgary Police Service on May 9, 2024 said they had "no responsive records." The same request to CPS turned up responsive records. UCalgary has some explaining to do. #abpoli

In 1890, the Tariff Act came into place in the United States. It placed tariffs on imports of up to 50%. While touted as a way to build American industry, there was also the hope it would force an annexation of Canada. It backfired. Let's learn more. 🧵1/10

This should be re-posted and read broadly; so much for non-political interference in policing. #ableg #abpoli @jwatsonhamilton.bsky.social @jenniferkoshan.bsky.social

This freedom of information-based story details police use of violence unleashed by @ucalgary.bsky.social handling of a peaceful pro-Palestinian protest last May and the related political interference - both swept under the rug in UCalgary's review of their actions. #abpoli
