With the benefit of the flu vaccine this year, “86 children and 19,000 adults have died from flu this season. About 430,000 people were hospitalized.”

We’ve already kind of seen it with Musk killing tens of thousands in the developing world and nary a peep from all but a handful of folks, because his victims lacked the greatest privilege you can have in the world: being an American.

the current head of the FBI has 8 separate appearances on this show

Read every word of this article reporting how immigration detainees were abused in Guantanamo. 1 hour a week outdoors, shackled. Otherwise solitary. Military guards. Leaders and unfortunately apparently service members guilty of humanity’s worst. www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/...

This is premature. First, it reduces “great power competition” to the Biden approach to China. But the term was only ever a euphemism encompassing a wide variety of China exclusion policies, often in tension with each other. Trump is throwing some aside but intensifying others. 1/

This is the first death from measles in the US since 2015. Measles is a horrible disease that used to kill millions of people every year. But today in the US any death is an entirely preventable tragedy. If the US continues on its current trajectory there will be more and more tragedies... #IDsky 🧪

If they are successful in eliminating those parts of the state that keep the economy going and allow people to lead minimally tolerable lives, we’ll see an upsurge of everyday disorder and social violence. They would then dramatically expand the state in response—in this direction.

this action has already murdered ~14,000 adults and ~1,500 children pepfar.impactcounter.com bsky.app/profile/bran...

It’ll be fun to see where they stand on personal liberties when the Army starts shooting protesters to safeguard “free markets” (i.e. the unconstrained power of billionaires).

Bezos destroying the post opinion pages is just another reminder: Conservatives think free speech is when they can say what they want and when you can say what they want.

Massive encroachment by Bezos into The Washington Post’s opinion section - makes clear dissenting views will not be published I still have not felt encroachment on my journalism on the news side, but if Bezos tries interfering with the news side I will be quitting immediately and letting you know

It’s not the most salient at the moment, but I feel like one of the central things about this moment is the insane sinophobia of so many of our journalists and politicians. www.axios.com/2025/02/18/u...

Brazil, Chile, Morocco, Nigeria, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan each bought enough solar panels from China in 2024 to meet between 3% and 5% of their annual electricy demand. www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

Democratic Leaders Stand Real Still In Hopes No One Notices Them

When OMB head Russ Vought talks about deliberate efforts to put federal employees "in trauma" and make them quit their jobs, he's talking about people like Michelle, recently fired by Musk/Trump. www.sfgate.com/california/a...

Interesting that WaPo misreported Iran as voting with Russia and the US against the resolution. Iran, like China and India, in fact abstained. The error is still there many hours later. Possible to correct this, @johnphudson.bsky.social @siobhanogrady.bsky.social?

A literalization of the “you pretend to work and we will pretend to pay you” model of late Soviet Union

The destruction of the state is a disaster, yes, but it’s producing some incredible content

The US joining Russia on this vote is astonishing. Compare: China and India—trying to balance support for territorial integrity with consideration for Russia’s interests—have consistently abstained from such votes. Today the US tossed aside that sort of ambiguity and simply aligned with Russia. 1/

This is a real statement put out by the real (interim) U.S. Attorney for D.C. It’s almost impressive just how much it gets so wrong in so few words.

Trump has finally put an end to the US double standard on the wars in Ukraine and Palestine. Might makes right, no matter who you are!

In Indiana, 16 and 17-year-olds can now work the same hours as adults and are no longer restricted by school hours and days. They also can work overnight without an adult and perform hazardous agriculture jobs. Many 14- and 15-year-olds can now work during school hours as well.

"If you were to ask top chief executives in the world to name best strategy to attack waste in their organizations & balance the books, there is one answer you would be very, very unlikely to hear: Take an ax to accounts receivable, the part of an organization responsible for collecting revenue"

@faiz.bsky.social on Dems’ opposition strategy: “I would like to see [Democrats] get out of DC… The power right now being a working class party is out there in the country. People who are hurt… they work at Walmart, they work at McDonalds… They need to have their stories told.”

Wow…I had to double, triple check to make sure this tweet from Senator Smith was real. Rare to see a US Senator tweet like this. Not complaining, just surprising.

Jeffries: hey the GOP controls the government, absolutely nothing i can do, gonna work on my personal book tour Sanders: brb i am going to personally barnstorm strategic GOP house districts and try to peel off 2 votes so we can block Trump's cuts to Medicaid www.commondreams.org/news/bernie-...

In modern history, what is the least popular that party leaders have ever been to their OWN voters? Second place was the GOP in 2009, where their net approval with Republican voters was only +6. Currently Dems are -8, shattering all previous records.

Just look at these paragraphs from the AP story. Hegseth called Brown unqualified solely because he's Black. Then they fired him... and replaced him with a white guy so indisputably unqualified that he requires a Presidential waiver. This is what "merit" means to them. apnews.com/article/trum...

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

"The Trump administration fired the only locksmith on staff on Friday...the sole employee with the keys and the institutional knowledge needed to rescue visitors from locked restrooms." www.washingtonpost.com/climate-envi...

Excellent points. It’s worth adding that this is only a specific symptom of the deeper sickness: huge capital surpluses without any productive outlet because inequality deprives viable businesses of consumer demand. In a healthy economy, investors would never fall prey to these scams.

this could be overreach, and backfire or, AOC could be the first sitting US politician to become a political prisoner in -- well honestly i don't know if there's a precedent

Conservatives claim critical race theory is confusing but they sure are devoted to seeing the white male as the "unmarked default" human category.

Strong as in: masculine! No patience for effete accounting balances. And masculine as in: men conquer! No patience for effete ideas of mutual gain.
