Today’s Daily Cartoon, by Paul Noth. #NewYorkerCartoons nyer.cm/dE5ukWH

Auchincloss: "It would help if the administration would stop telling Russia that it has all the cards. It's not a great way to negotiate when you grant leverage to your enemy. Russia does not have all the cards. They have double digit inflation ... "

The government claims Mahmoud Khalil was already in NJ on his way to Louisiana by the time his habeas petition was filed—an argument that the NY federal court lacks jurisdiction. But Khalil's lawyer checked the ICE locator when she filed and even 4 hrs after, and he was listed as still being in NY.

Today is the 35th anniversary of the Capitol Crawl, in which disabled activists discarded their mobility aids at the foot of the Capitol steps to climb them in support of passage of the Americans with Disabilities Ac. Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins, 8, told reporters "I'll take all night if I have to!"

Trump has delegated to Musk extraordinary power over the government. Yet Musk is almost entirely unfettered from mechanisms of basic accountability. New piece from me on Trump, Musk, the Tesla stunt and patrimonialism in government: newrepublic.com/article/1926...

For all the silent colleagues, including the decolonizing Classics bunch who has had nothing to say about Palestine, remains silent on Mahmoud Khalil, and obeys fascism in advance: No, you won't be "questioned on Greek mythology" x.com/danpjsheehan...

I just heard this as well. The entire staff of the National Center for Education Statistics, created in 1867, has been fired.

35/100 #BookSky 📚 Art made during & about unprecedented times is fascinating so I’ve been reading books processing the pandemic & wow, this is a really good one. Not surprising given the authors. Also, knowing the answer made me want to reread it to see if I could find the clues to the answer.

You know I kind of feel like reckoning with the one million dead and counting might have helped us avoid getting to this point in public health where measles deaths are being excused by saying the dead kids had pre-existing conditions.

Research from 2022 that every Democrat apologist should chew on: “We do not find any evidence that accommodative strategies reduce radical right support. If anything, our results suggest that they lead to more voters defecting to the radical right.“ www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

You give an inch they take your home. Haven't you learned this by now?

Something to understand about Newsom: He knew and was friends with some of the most far-right/fringe Trump figures, before they went MAGA. Elon, Sacks, RFK Jr. He's not sure why they, and not liberals, won the moment. I think he's working it out with these interviews.

The institutions of the American economy depend on the institutions of American democracy; rule of law, consistent regulation, stability, and all the rest. That’s what’s being destroyed and that’s what risks the *entire economy. Saying that out loud shouldn’t (and can’t) be a risk

The whole thing is important, but listen until the end: the US depends a lot on the flow of capital into the country because it is perceived as the safest port in a storm. Once that is no longer true, a lot of things Americans take for granted go away.

Musk has now poured $8.3 million into buying the tie-breaking Wisconsin Supreme Court seat for Brad Schimel. That is vastly more than any other single donor—to eliminate a state-level check on his and Trump's power. Help us fight back and elect Susan Crawford: PeopleVMusk.com

A lot can happen in five months. 🇺🇸

Information produced by the state is a public good. This administration seems dead set on destroying basically all public goods, from public health to education to weather forecasting. It’s breathtaking in its simplicity and its harm.

The city’s payroll data show, out of its top 100 earners, 91 worked for the Boston police and each made more than $380,000 when combining their base pay, overtime, retroactive pay and other compensation.

The CR, unless it’s changed, will block the District of Columbia from spending about $1 billion of its locally raised revenue (from local taxes, fees, etc.), forcing sweeping cuts for a city that had passed a balanced budget www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

DC has a large Black population and that’s reason enough for Republicans. Bigotry through policy is their governing philosophy.

My daughter's daycare just sent out an email about potentially needing to layoff staff because new babies about to start withdrew because of parental job losses. So if you're wondering how government layoffs and mass contract cancellations will affect the economy, here's an example

Recklessly firing thousands of workers at the U.S. Department of Education is an assault on our students and educators. This will undermine public education, threaten civil rights enforcement, and harm our most vulnerable.

🫠

We are rapidly heading towards no more civil rights in education. This is a nightmare for students of color, disabled students, LGBTQ+ students, pregnant students, girls’ and women’s athletics, girls and women. Which is, of course, what they want.

The wanton destruction of the edifice of American science. It will take at least a generation to recover from this, if we’re so lucky.

The fact that a good percentage of Americans are actually just fucking stupid, watching this makes me want to bash my head in a fucking wall. This is exactly why civics classes should be mandatory in all public schools across the nation. Like, you cannot fix this level of stupid otherwise.

More of this!

Republicans' shameful bill would make people in my district hungrier, poorer, and sicker. And it would embolden Musk and Trump to continue gutting essential services, ransacking federal agencies, and attacking our democracy. I voted NO. My full statement.

How could you possibly vote for a funding bill that the Vice President is telling you will be overruled by the executive? www.politico.com/live-updates...

Mahmoud Khalil should be at home with his pregnant wife. Instead, he's been illegally abducted & had his constitutional right to free speech & due process stripped. We're demanding his immediate release and we cannot allow this abuse of power to go unchecked. #FreeMahmoudKhalil

We only rate dogs. This is a very cuddly croissant. We understand the confusion between puppies and pastries, but please only send dogs. Thank you... 12/10

#KingArthurFlour has about a dozen rye bread recipes & I’m probably going to try most of them to figure out which one is my favorite. I started with the caraway rye recipe & it’s pretty good & pretty easy.

Musk claims Social Security is a "gigantic magnet to attract illegal immigrants." In fact, immigrants here illegally do not collect Social Security. But they pay $25.7 billion a year into it, a recent study found, so these undocumented workers are actually subsidizing Americans.

This is insanely idiotic of course but also comes a few days after “being aligned with protests I don’t like gets you deported” so treating it as *only* idiotic is probably ill-advised.

Musk and Trump could not possibly be sending a clearer signal that the Tesla protests are working than this pathetic stunt today.

Maaaan… this sucks.

Am I the only one who thinks this is sad and pathetic??

it'll genuinely terrifying what's coming down the pike if he does this.

To go with the news that all ED staff have been ordered to leave their offices by 6pm tonight. This is almost certainly why. #EduSky
