But I haven’t yet seen a business take on the role/capabilities of WEA. It’s a complicated partnership that, with all its temperamental problems (I’m sure you’ve read about them), works to reach the most people who are in danger. I’m not holding my breath but…8/

I’ve been waiting for a company to take on this task of alerting and we’ve seen Google jump into the fray with their earthquake warnings (it’s very cool - uses the seismometer in the android) and they work internationally. We see lots of weather apps that recycle data from NWS. 7/

I have been holding onto hope that this system will survive the purge. Perhaps it needs to be said that this is also the system that enables the president to broadcast a national alert to everyone everywhere all at once and without IPAWS, that wouldn’t be possible. 6/

We’ve spent 75 years studying how to improve communication in disaster and IPAWS has revolutionized that capability. WEA is being copied around the world and our research on how to construct effective warnings is being implemented globally. 5/

And it’s really a marvel of public-private coordination. Those cell carriers aren’t mandated to participate but they do. And the alerts that arrive on your phone with seconds or minutes to act can, and have, saved lives. It’s not a partisan thing. It’s about keeping people safe. 4/

They manage EAS and, the channel I have focused on for the past 10 years, WEA. Wireless Emergency Alerts are the equivalent of a siren in your pocket and they enable emergency managers to reach you without requiring you to sign up (opt in). This is the system that sends AMBER alerts 2/
