When I first knew my wife we used to talk a lot via SMS, which as she lived in Ireland was about 10p per 160 characters of text. My mobile bills were absolutely crippling, and then one day it just suddenly became ordinary unmetered data.

Is there a corollary for ‘the purpose of a system is what it does’ but for people? Because I’m bored of hearing somebody’s ‘brand’ being used to defend that person’s consistent pattern of behaviour. I don’t care how smart you think they are, if they consistently do objectively bad things.

There needs to be a movement away from centralised corporate provision of encryption and back towards distributed, open source tools. Encryption is maths, and you can’t ban maths.

Seconds Out is such a fantastic live album. Firstly for the cornucopia of prog rock goodness in one place, but also because it demonstrated how perfect Phil Collins was to succeed Peter Gabriel.
