Awesome effort to organize rides! Thanks @margaret-eisen.bsky.social !

Standing up for science means standing up for knowledge, for democracy, for liberty, and for America. If you're based in Texas, rally with us on March 7th at 4pm at the Texas State Capitol. If we stand together, we will defeat the forces of tyranny. Also I bought a Beaker costume.

This is so awesome! Go @rnareylab.bsky.social !

In light of policies to defund biomedical research, and with judicial hearings happening today, we hope to highlight the many ways biomedical research improves people's lives, and to convey how damaging the proposed cuts would be... not just for us researchers, but for everyone.

🚨 WANT TO HELP US STAND UP FOR SCIENCE? 🚨 Here's a little update on where we're currently at with the planning process! Is your state red or grey & you want to see an event happen? Fill out our volunteer form or share with a friend! airtable.com/app4h5wUssMG... #standupforscience2025

Join us! Science Homecoming helps scientists reconnect with communities by writing about the importance of science funding in their hometown newspapers. We’ve mapped every small newspaper in the U.S. and provide resources to get you started. Help science get back home 🧪🔬🧬 🏠 sciencehomecoming.com

This thread makes an important point! When talking to Representatives or the media, focus on the health and economic impact. Republican members are usually terrified of China winning — this hands them biomedical supremacy on a platter.

The only times I haven't been thinking about current events have been times thinking about science with others. What a joy. Science is fed by a diverse community exchanging ideas, and solving problems with teamwork. Let's fight for it. So, what are you up to? Joys or advocacy ideas welcome.

Trainees who applied for an NIH diversity fellowship whose applications were withdrawn/not being reviewed, there's a NYTimes reporter who wants to talk, especially interested in applicants with disabilities. DM me & I'll put you in touch, will keep all contact confidential. Please amplify

A very helpful thread on communicating the value of what we do to the public

Having funded teams/contracts that required six figure+ funds a few times now, these numbers SOUND really huge in isolation to normal folks but they're not! Don't make floating numbers! I like to say things like this: "A cancer lab is basically a small business, with many jobs created by each grant"

Okay, I cannot recommend 5calls.org enough. Enter your address and it will find all your reps (federal and state). AND give you a list of issues to call about AND which reps to call about each of them AND a little script for each, in case it's helpful. They have an app, too.

🚨PIs of Training Grants and Programs, ESPECIALLY training grants that support students from historically excluded groups (T32s and T34s, IMSD, MARC, PREP, MOSAIC, etc.)🚨 We need to push back on the loss of information and the disappearance of websites about these resources.

Academic workers across the country are organizing to call on our congressional representatives on Thursday, 1/30, at 3pm ET / 12pm PT to demand these restrictions be lifted immediately. There will be a training over zoom at the beginning of the event. Join us! form.jotform.com/250226137228...

The talented @neurograce.bsky.social on the weight and necessity of agency.

The communications pause at health agencies has extended to external procurement orders for supplies for internal research @ NIH, sources tell @reportergoodman.bsky.social & me. Some researchers worry they won't be able to buy test tubes to draw blood or food for animals: www.cnn.com/2025/01/24/h...

Lots of haptic joys here. Pushing little rubber buttons on a calculator or phone was so satisfying. Screen typing isn’t the same. I also remember opening a flip phone with a wrist flick.

An important article describing the challenges of treating pain, and the terrible frustration and suffering from living with it.

Many of you already know about my battle with an autoimmune disease that started shortly after I got COVID in 2022. Here's a summary from a science/health blog aimed at battling disinformation. 🧪😷🧠 Separate from my story, there is a lot of other useful health content! www.youcanknowthings.com

I joined 75+ @nobelprize.bsky.social laureates urging US Senators to oppose RFK Jr.'s confirmation as DHHS Secretary. If you’re in a state with GOP senators, PLEASE reach out to them! I’d deeply appreciate it if you amplified this post! 🙏 www.nytimes.com/2024/12/09/h...

Absolutely fascinating survey from Pew Research on public trust in science came out today. If you are wanting to reach across the aisle and help restore trust in science, the very first step is knowing your audience. Here's what they found. www.pewresearch.org/science/2024...

I’m so proud of all the students who presented at the multi-institution Cooley Neuroscience poster session this morning, and extra excited for @brityag.bsky.social, who won second place! Congrats!!! The lab had 2 grad students and 1 PREP scholar present. It’s fun to see projects taking shape!

This was a wonderful meeting! Thanks to the speakers and attendees for making this so interesting. Also very grateful to Janelia!

Sensory Biology of Ingestion at Janelia. Organized with Zachary Knight and Kara Marshall. Thanks to everyone for coming and Janelia for their support!
