But is is limited. Assistant professorships are often broken into multiple pre-tenure review periods at which stages the person could be not renewed. Some have 2-year periods, some 3. Ours is 3 plus 1 if not renewed, 3+3 if renewed. Nothing is unlimited until tenure.

Arguable. But that doesn’t make him either 1. Better judge of what makes a good drama that Aeschylus or Euripides, nor 2. A particularly exceptional literary critic. Just because the name on the cover says “Aristotle” doesn’t de facto make the arguments strong.

There is a grave marker in Greek in the Diocletian museum for a Jewish woman named Faustian. It’s one of my favorites.

The American rule is jus solis. Like the English rule: if you're born here you're a citizen, unless you're subject to some foreign sovereign's direct authority (i.e. you're a diplomat or a member of an invading armed forces following that sovereign's orders).

I just did a class for "lifelong learners" (retirees) at our county library on ancient Athenian democracy (and I did it for parent weekend and for a group of BoT/alumni) and they all found it scarily relevant.

Deadlines are very different from timed in class writing.

I wrote an article in 2013 on Aeschylus’s Persians arguing that he defends certain forms of monarchical power, just not others and it isn’t all rah rah democracy. I still agree with myself (which is shocking).

I can’t believe I have to go out into those too few degrees. Fortunately, my cat won’t let me get up.
