“Migrants, illegal or legal, weren’t responsible for austerity. They weren’t responsible for Brexit. They weren’t responsible for Liz Truss’ failure. Because of populist policies in the ‘30s Hitler was elected. If we follow the same blaming of migrants we will go the same way” #bbcqt

Word of the day is ‘sequaciousness’ (16th century): the slavish and reckless following of another person in matters of thought or opinion.

Trump’s previous Surgeon General.

In today's #vatniksoup, I'll introduce an American political analyst and media executive, Steve Bannon. He's best-known for being Trump's chief strategist, "flooding the zone with shit", and for attempting to unite far-right, pro-Putin political parties around Europe. 1/23

To be fair she does look like a chicken.

Hello. This is your friendly reminder to tax the churches.

'A phantom political force was born: oligarchical money + psychographic information about individuals + social media delivery system + demotivational message.' Absolutely spot on from @timothysnyder.bsky.social snyder.substack.com/p/the-phanto...

Russia did exactly this to HRC in 2016, aiming to suppress her vote, and probably did. Musk no doubt did suppress Harris voting as well with these demotivation techniques. This should be illegal. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Final thoughts today. My conclusion is that many in the US have no idea what's coming for it. Can't/won't believe. 'The institutions will hold'. 'There's always the courts.' Let's hope so. But the plan is shock & awe. Think high-profile scapegoats, a climate of fear, institutional cowardice.

This is a great community ethos. Did you know there’s also a “Newskies” feed with first posts from new users? I sometimes go in there and say hi to new folks coming on.

A few weeks ago I asked the Deputy Prime Minster what the govt was doing to reduce #Brexit red tape and delays affecting British business. She didn't give a clear answer. Access to the European customs union would mean issues like this just wouldn't happen. www.theguardian.com/food/2024/no...

This is a Constitutional crisis and it’s a family emergency. Yes, our Democracy is in peril, but our most treasured relationships with people are in tatters too. We are trying to salvage both and it’s exhausting. johnpavlovitz.substack.com/p/yes-world-...

fascism is stopped when enough people say one of two things: 1) "nah, I'm not doing that" 2) "nah, you're not doing that" a lot of people want to imagine how they'll say the second thing, but you should *really* start practicing the first one

I wake up as always, every day after November 5th, frankly stunned at the short sightedness of American voters. Most of them have no idea what they’ve wrought. My guess is only a small percentage of Americans are actual, knowing fascists. Most just don’t know basic things about government.

NEW: The great Trump-Musk crackdown is coming. And it will hit hard & fast. Journalists will be first. But everyone else is next. I urge you to read my 20 lessons in How to Survive the Broligarchy, inspired by & featuring the great @timothysnyder.bsky.social 1/ www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

We now have a starter pack for the signatories of our open letter from UK journalists who are ditching X With thanks to @jamesmoules.bsky.social for assembling the pack. Do give them a follow and share go.bsky.app/7ZiGEcP

Is America an oligarchy? Even a system that calls itself a democracy can become an oligarchy if power becomes concentrated in the hands of a few very wealthy people and corporations.
