Briefly putting on my hat as @asn-amnat.bsky.social President: The ASN Council has just distributed an updated message to the American Society of Naturalists members with information about actions that can be undertaken to advocate for science, and scientists, within the US:

Kind of feels like there wasn’t a mandate to destroy the health insurance program that covers 24% of Americans in order to fund a giant tax giveaway for billionaires and corporations, but maybe it’s just me.

Are you a fish biologist or ichthyologist with a PhD looking for a job? We’re hiring! Review of applications will begin March 20th.🐟🐠🎣🐡 careers.eku.edu/jobs/5746126...

🚨If YOU live in 1 of these REPUBLICAN districts, these are the MOST vulnerable R's whose seats will be FLIPPED next year if they vote YES to cut Medicaid. Please CALL your representative the vote is TOMORROW & help SAVE this program. YOUR voice does matter and does make a DIFFERENCE. 202-224-3121.🚨

If only there was some historical precedent for understanding whether attempting to appease a hostile government and hoping they chill the f out and go back to normal ever works? Hmm. hmm. hmm.

Please share: @delauro.house.gov is cochair of the US House Congressional Rapid Response Task Force and Litigation Working Group. Apply for the #ABS2025 Turner and Career Diversity awards! These awards are aimed at supporting undergraduates from backgrounds underrepresented in science and those in career stages with less opportunity for conference support. See here for more info: www.animalbehaviorsociety.org/web/awards.php

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

Thousands of workers across the country hit the streets this week to declare their opposition to Trump and Musk who, under the guise of “efficiency,” are slashing and burning public services.

NIH indirects case update: Hearing ongoing now, and I'll try to live tweet some notable exchanges. Prior to more detailed arguments, Judge Kelley starts off with a few point questions to both sides: (I'm paraphrasing here)

Fwiw anecdotally the calls to elected are still at "very high volume" but slowing down. That's not good.

"“In the US, we appeal rulings we disagree with – we don’t ignore court orders or threaten judges with impeachment just because we don’t like the decision. This is a coup, plain and simple,” Arizona’s attorney general, Kris Mayes, said." www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

We'll be there!

It was awesome to see so many UC Davis profs (I personally recognized 5 faculty) there speaking up for our work and more importantly, all our trainees.

The main take home that I got from my congressional town hall tonight is that without a massive public uprising, it will be hard to stop what the administration is doing

If your senators are: Catherine Cortez Masto (NV), John Fetterman (PA), Ruben Gallego (AZ), Maggie Hassan (NH), Mark Kelly (AZ), John Ossoff (GA), Gary Peters (MI), Jacky Rosen (NV), Jeanne Shaheen (NH), Elissa Slotkin (MI), Mark Warner (VA), Raphael Warnock (GA) Then read this and start calling!

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

Today was the saddest day of my professional life. To see amazing scientists terminated from the NSF because they had worked there fewer than 2 years. The scientific enterprise is deeply wounded by these and similar actions across the government. Science denial will never make a nation great.

They screwed this all up.

The Democrats on the House Science Committee have set up a website to collect stories from fired federal employees, anonymously if desired democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

An inspiring article on courageous community college leaders who are *publicly* organizing and standing up against DEI attacks.. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

Do it @housedemocrats.bsky.social @senatedem.bsky.social.

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

Shout out to everyone going through the motions, calling our reps, doing the dishes, meeting with students, knocking out a review as we watch the constitution slip away, knowing full well we're not the first to live through a political crisis, but knowing it still hurts.

Effective today, new regulations on #NIH grants will gut UC research funding by hundreds of millions of dollars annually. The University strongly opposes this directive and has submitted a declaration in support of California Attorney General Rob Bonta's suit to block these cuts. bit.ly/3QfhNTv
