Just remembering all the senior scientists in my field who criticized me for speaking out against Donald Trump’s plans during the campaign. Stick to science, they said. Hard to do that when all the scientists are getting fired.

I’ll be there too!

Many Medicaid recipients do not know they receive it because Medicaid is called different things in different states. The public narrative of Medicaid focuses on a distant other, but 40% of US children and 60% of nursing home residents receive Medicaid. Just SOME of the names by state are below:

This helps to understand what's going on with the REUs (Research Experience for Undergraduates): On Feb 13, NSF said: "Although we [had earlier] sent many of you emails expressing our plans to recommend for funding...We deeply regret that we are not going to be able to hold to all of those plans."

Studies show that funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) contributed to 354 of 356 drugs (99.4%) approved by the FDA from 2010 to 2019. Recklessly slashing NIH funding will mean that patients will be waiting much longer for life-saving treatments.

Please enjoy my last ever post at Climate.gov/ENSO Blog. This afternoon I was fired by the Trump Administration 15 days before my 2yr probationary period ended on March 13. I have worked at NOAA since 2010, and I'm so incredibly proud of the work I did. If anyone wants a quote, let me know.

By @katherinejwu.com "The NIH... supported 99 percent of the drugs approved in the U.S. from 2010 to 2019. The agency has had a hand in “nearly all of our major medical breakthroughs over the past several decades,” The NIH is in a struggle for its (and our) lives. This is existential to America:

All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

BREAKING: The NIH summer internship program (SIP) has been officially cancelled, across all institutes. It’s a sad loss for the brightest science students in America, for American science, and for future cures for diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. 🧪 1/

Happy #MicroscopyMonday! Walter Wanyoike, an undergrad in the lab, caught some really cool cytokinetic mishaps! Cytokinesis is the last step of cell division, where the daughter cells pinch apart. The 1st cell divides into 3, and the 2nd cell tries and tries but doesn't quite get there.

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE) If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread. There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.

Here are some facts about "facilities and administrative" (F&A) costs, what we in the business call "indirects" and what Musk is calling "overhead" as he tries to convince Americans with being ok with cutting billions on dollars from medical and public health research at universities & hospitals 1/

also governors - this is going to have a huge negative financial impact on every state that has universities doing research, which is all of them. big state universities will be particularly impacted since they don't have other sources of funding. make the call/ send an email, sooner the better

Let’s be clear about something that maybe the wider public will get. Not only will this destroy research but it will also lead to huge tuition increases. Your kids’ college is about to get a lot more expensive.

Your Action Is Needed! Congress needs to hear from scientists. Call your representatives to oppose funding freezes and restrictions on research. Find contact info at govtrack.us and make your voice heard today! #SciencePolicy www.ascb.org/science-poli...

Hi all, I am in contact with a reporter at Science magazine who would like to talk with a trainee or mentor who successfully applied for an equity/DEI-related NIH training grant or a training supplement but have not received the Notice of Award and probably won't get the grant.

Some quotes from the email. "...the NIH has instructed us not to issue any diversity supplements that are pending award and are not yet issued." "The NOFO... has been cancelled and will no longer receive applications." "...we have no further insight about the future of this mechanism."

If anyone has the resources to resist, its HHMI. Ending this program with no notice and literally scrubbing evidence it ever existed from the website is shocking and dosappointing

I just heard the news that R Scott Hawley, meiosis enthusiast and founding Dean of the Grad School of the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, passed away today. Such a loss for the science and education community. I will miss our zooms and his deep, deep wisdom

My letter to ASM leaders that I sent is too long to be posted here, so I'm going to post highlights in case anyone else needs information for their letter. 🧵

Happy #MicroscopyMonday! The last rainbow amoeba poster I made seemed a little too subtle, so here’s a new version! Download any of my posters at: katrinavelle.wixsite.com/science/prin...

If you have been affected by the fires in LA, or are concerned about your ability to keep precious Drosophila strains going during the latest funding crisis, we will host your strains as a backup. Please email me. Please amplify. If you are also able to host fly strains, add your name as well.

Calls are being registered--when i spoke to someone in Senator Tillis' office this morning they told me many people had called already today. Call tomorrow!

Kudos to @asm.org I have never in my nearly 25yrs as a member been sent an "ASM Action Alert" asking me to contact my members of Congress. Make those calls. Write those emails. There are extraordinary times and we must make ourselves heard

#CellMigration for #FluorescenceFriday 🧪🔬 If a metastatic #cancer cell is offered 2 paths it decides very fast, bc it does matter where it goes... OTOH, if a non-cancer #cell is offered 2 options it takes some time to explore and decide. More in the paper: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Hey all! I’m looking for a virologist who would be willing to zoom with my virology class May 6 between 10-11:15 to give a talk on your work and take questions from 9 undergraduates. I’d make them read a paper of your choice in prep for your talk. Please share in virology circles! #microsky

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH** * Currently paused by Executive Order ** Grant reviews now all canceled www.kcur.org/news/2025-01...

I just reached out to my senators about the NIH situation. If you need to find out how much impact NIH has in your state in terms of dollars in and their economic impact here's a link: www.unitedformedicalresearch.org/nih-in-your-...

I loved capturing this bdelloid #rotifer last night. That "beating heart" is its grinding organ, a "mastax", and there is a large egg in her body cavity. I also appreciate the Chainsaw-like wheel organ that creates currents to "inhale" food particles. Motic BA310e /Labcam Ultra/iPhone15 #microscopy

🌟@askennard.bsky.social @katrinavelle.bsky.social @fritzlaylin.bsky.social et al. published a beautiful paper in @currentbiology.bsky.social 🌟 @gilh.bsky.social & I 👯‍♂️ highlighted this exciting work! Article: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
 Dispatch: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

We got to write a dispatch on @askennard.bsky.social 's cool new paper on the evolution of tubulins and their interactomes, using Naegleria gruberi as a model.

Had an amazing time at the Directed Cell Migration GRS/GRC. Sally Horne-Badovinac, @robinsall.bsky.social and Rebecca Jones were awesome as co-chairs and made the whole organizing process so much easier. I met so many old friends and made so many more new ones! 😊

Just making sure that everyone is aware of this crab that NOAA scientists found

Happy #MicroscopyMonday from the Directed Cell Migration GRC! This video was taken by @arzaf.bsky.social, a graduate student in my lab. Nice imaging, Zaf!

#CellMigration meets #SciArt Naomi Wee (naomiwee.com) did this great movie to explain how amoeboid migration works (also mesenchymal & cancer migration) Wanna know what happens if this leukocyte chooses the wrong path? Watch this ! www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPwn... @focalplane.bsky.social #SciSky

I released the LUT finder: A plugin to see all your ImageJ / Fiji LUTs in a table with previews, auto generated descriptions and filtering! You can try it with the KTZ_LUTs update site or from github.com/kwolbachia/L.... I'm looking for your feedbacks! #FluorescenceFriday #MicroscopyMonday
