Third graders in Steubenville, Ohio, are among the best little readers in the nation. For nearly 20 years, the elementary schools in this economically depressed area have produced better readers than some of the wealthiest places in the country. www.apmreports.org/story/2025/0...

“Some kids think faster than others, but that doesn’t mean that the kids who aren’t as fast don’t understand.” 💭 This instructional strategy encourages more students to participate in class discussions. #EduSky #MiddleSchoolTeacher

We tend to measure academic success by the big wins: Passing a test with flying colors, for example, or earning top grades in a demanding course. But it’s the small wins that motivate students to keep going amid the inevitable academic struggles, new research shows. 🧵1/6

I purchased *The Polio Pioneer* for my classroom library years ago — inspired by Pittsburgh history & my grandfather— who suffered from leg issues because he had Polio as a child.

It’s all I have at the moment— but much needed for my afternoon energy level. Tweaking a presentation for adults and then one more class to teach. Instant espresso.

📅 Great AI use case for my calendar! From a PDF of our district calendar for 25-26 I asked ChatGPT to write a Google Apps script to add all the non-instructional days/holidays to my Google Calendar. It worked beautifully. Pro-tip, specify your time zone or dates may be off. #EduSkyAI #EduSky

Is negativity bias bringing you down? 🌧️ It’s normal for negative experiences to capture our attention—it’s how our brains are wired! But if they’re overshadowing the “abundant positives” you’re achieving, these strategies can help you find a better balance. #EduSky

Guided Inquiry is one of many lesson structures I share in Teaching Reading Across the Day. It's a cold one in #Pittsburgh this morning, and the view from under the Andy Warhol Bridge reminded me of the 'Exile or death' scene from The Dark Knight Rises. This panorama stretches from the Rachel Carson Bridge (left) to the Clemente (right) with the Warhol Bridge overhead.

In our study, we asked how much time was needed to teach #phonemicawareness (PA) optimally. Results showed that PA instruction effects improved with increasing dosage up to 10.20 hours of instruction (max effect = 0.74), after which the effects declined (=progress got slower). 🔗 shorturl.at/SGqJn

A couple views from the Duquesne Incline in #Pittsburgh yesterday morning as the heaviest of the snow was moving through the city. The second image looks like a scene straight out of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Natalie Portman’s Fables are a favorite! And on the agenda today along with Model Drawing— a Singapore Word Problem Math Strategy. Staying warm & cozy today—

Finally sunshine…streaming on my desk… ☀️ as I look over last year’s presentation I put together. Every year for over 10 years now— I host my “Warm Up To A Good Book” for my students. Book talks & hot chocolate! Almost time for 2025’s round.

The NRP Report (2000) found that independent silent reading may not be the most efficient use of instructional time. In our study, we replicated the finding. We found that independent reading didn't contribute meaningfully to improved reading outcomes. 🔗 shorturl.at/ZeBJz 🔗 shorturl.at/BZBpt

Had a chat with a wanna be EdTech company They want to use AI to make worksheets and have teachers pay out of pocket as the audience. I asked how many teachers were on their team... Zero. Wanna guess what I told them 🤣🤣 #EduSky

It was a snowglobe kinda night in #Pittsburgh this evening, and I was down on the North Shore to capture it. The bridges are back to their traditional gold instead of the light show that played for the last month, and they looked beautiful beneath the falling snow.

1/ The reality is that AI detectors are built using the same systems that generate AI writing. The detector is going to analyze the writing, looking for statistical patterns of word choice, sentence variation, structure, transitions, and complexity.” www.edutopia.org/article/ai-d...

Really crazy morning in #Pittsburgh today. The rivers were legitimately mirrors...I can't remember the last time I saw them THIS still. It made for amazing reflections all around the city, from the North Shore to the West End. My first stop had to be that new lighting on the Sister Bridges.

“It’s easy to spot details but hard to see patterns. For students to think conceptually, they need opportunities to head up to the mountaintop, pause, & take in the entire forest. They need the chance to search for big ideas—to generalize, summarize, & draw conclus.” www.edutopia.org/article/3-wa...
