I say this a lot to clients and here is why. Do not depend on an app to use an appliance you expect use in terms of decades. arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025...

So half the ships bringing cheap stuff here to the US. I'm pretty sure we're gonna notice that.

JD Vance joins Liz Truss on an inauspicious list

Again, I’m totally fascinated by how EASILY and QUICKLY the US turned into *this* type of country. Teeniest, tiniest of nudges was all it took 🤏

Thanks to Trump’s tariffs, American exports are falling off a cliff. In March 2025, loaded exports through the Port of Los Angeles dropped 15.02%, while empty containers surged 23.15%. A clear sign that ships are heading back to Asia without US goods. That’s brutal for American exporters.

My Trade Secrets today. It's a longstanding American grievance that predates Trump: US companies can't sell cars in Europe & elsewhere because of evil trade barriers. It's actually because US protectionism has encouraged its carmakers to make clunky great gas-guzzlers no one else wants to buy.

I was in Uni around the time of the US invasion of Iraq, as well as its after effects. Anyone who did IR or US foreign policy especially around this time knows of Bill Kristol and his diehard Republican views. This is not a comment I ever expected to read from him, even 20 years later.

Wow. Seth Rogen with more guts than most administrators and CEOs, right now. 😂 www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general...

Bonkers chart from Canadian election polling.

This is important. It might not change anything but speaking out is the right thing - “Silence is seen as support for policies”. Letter: As British Jews we can no longer stay silent on the war in Gaza www.ft.com/content/6a50...

Wrote a thing at how the Bukele/Trump meeting, full of absolute nonsense and bullshit in support of out-and-out fascism and despotism, is yet another dark day in America. www.techdirt.com/2025/04/14/t...

About 1 in every 60 people in El Salvador is incarcerated. That is more than twice the runner up (Cuba, which is around the same ballpark of estimates for North Korea) and more than three times the notoriously high rate in the United States. It is about on par with the gulag population under Stalin.

My and every normal person’s reaction:

Hours ago, @politico.com revealed that DOGE is working with DHS on automating mass deportation efforts — likely explaining why many US citizens, green card holders, and even a Canadian (in Canada) got threatening emails last night terminating “your parole” and telling them to leave the US in 7 days.

I see we've reached the "don't worry, the Finance Minister is a Western-educated former fund manager" stage of the emerging market crisis playbook. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Hah. For all their joy at having Trump in charge, Russia has screwed itself. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/10/w...

what a delightfully charming oopsie from the septuagenarian with the nuclear codes 👍👍 www.cbsnews.com/news/h-r-mcm...

This is a 12 alarm fire for the economy. If being friends with the president and giving him kickbacks makes you exempt from large import taxes Vs your competitors, it will stratify the whole economy and push corruption and loyalty and political controls deep into the private sector

okay now that you all have gotten a taste of America's rational and predictable new trade policy, everyone who wants to build your new factories here just form an orderly line

Conversations about and minute tracking of 10 year government bond yields again? Memories of the 2007/2008 Financial Crisis and the delightful PIIGS moniker is coming screaming back to me. Great stuff.

As the author of a history of concentration camps, I would like to emphasize that this is a very bad idea, and we should definitely not do it.

If anyone bitches about the usefulness of History degrees again, I’m watching BBC news and they’re trying to explain how the world ended up in the Great Depression - but explaining it like it’s to 5 year olds.

Leavitt confirmed that the WH is working on deporting US citizens to El Salvador

“The beatings will continue until morale improves”

Playing around with CBP airport processing data this morning to see how much air travel by non-US passengers is cratering.

Hmmmm sounds … credible 🤨 www.bbc.com/news/article...

Well it is heartening to see that 90% of voters in an Irish presidential election would NOT vote to the adjudged rapist McGregor. Take heed of that Oireachtas members & local authorities. #speirgorm

“having to flee the UK” High net worth individuals don’t flee. They hop onto private planes and leave at leisure. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

*looks at the European economy* *looks at the American S&P 500 losing $2.4 trillion in market value in one day* hmmmm….

NEW 🧵 A quick thread of charts showing how Trump’s economic agenda is going so far: 1) US consumers are reacting very very negatively. These are the worst ratings for any US government’s economic policy since records began.

So the reason Norfolk Island copped a dramatically higher tariff than the rest of Australia is two shipments of Timbaland boots from the Bahamas and some aquarium supplies from the UK that had their point of origin mislabeled or misrecorded. www.theguardian.com/australia-ne...
