In an attempt to stay on point with the 'checking the data' part of the conversation, ddi you look back 2 years and perhaps spring 2024 was exceptionally busy? (I say this with the belief that we will see a dramatic decrease in foreign tourists this year.)
This is quite stark. We do need to remember that Easter was March 31st last year and it’s April 20th this year, so I would like to pay close attention over the next several weeks.
Many of us feel so bad regarding treatment by the current "regime." Just know so many did not vote for this clown show but have been caught up in its wake.
I and my family know the real pain is still to be had, but we will do what is in our power to turn the tide. In the meantime, we understand and support your stance to boycott us in all forms. And will happily embrace our friendship again once we are on the other side.
Elbows Up! Slava Ukraini!
In Nova Scotia at least (where I have friends and family) the early season bookings from Europe and Canada are highest that they can recall. It looks like a banner year for tourism. Suspect some of it is at the US expense.
Never mind getting on an airplane, airports are swarming with gestapo now, they can grab anybody they want with no warrant or badge and who knows where you’ll end up? No thank you.
Just flew through Atlanta. Didn't see any gestapo. My traveling buddy who has a dual US-Brazil passport didn't even get hassled (As we were expecting.).
How many of tickets in this phase were already booked and not cancellable? This decline will accelerate as you get further into pure discretionary travel.
I don't understand this tbh.
Overseas travellers don't book just a couple of days in advance. And I don't think so many people cancel their travel plans, burning thousands of dollars.
Whether it's holidaymakers, large conferences, I would have expected much longer leadtimes.
What is going on?
Agree it's gonna accelerate, but it has only recently been in the news and creeping into mainstream consciousness here. Probably only since the Canadian actor was disappeaered and the French prof denied entry for posting lese-majesty, and that was a couple of weeks ago.
A lot of ppl look to book 4-6 weeks out from travel as that’s normally a good time for ticket prices…it was how many weeks ago we started hearing about ppl being black bagged to Louisiana?
People are not only politically against travel to US, they are afraid. ICE is randomly detaining foreign travelers and denying them due process. It has become dangerous to travel to US. I would not be surprised if foreign countries begin to reciprocate against American travelers
Tip: if your cancelling/ cancelled US travel Google website of the member of Congress, mayor, chamber of commerce etc in destination area. Tell them details why, estimated $ spend, etc. That'll also have an impact.
I do not think that will happen. A huge tourism imbalance will offset some of Donald’s damage to their economies. They would rather have us spending our money there, and many Americans will want to do that.
I also suspect they recognize that Trump's popularity is razor thin and there's a lot of Americans who don't support him. By not punishing them, they are supporting his opposition.
Even if they still want our tourism dollars, we will be pariahs socially. I wouldn't expect a warm welcome for Americans traveling abroad beyond the most facile greetings from service workers.
I don't think you'll be pariahs in W. Europe as long as you don't wear MAGA hats and are vaccinated against measles. You'll probably need more tourism dollars, though.
Certainly if you go abroad and where a maga hat you should not expect respect. If you travel as a humble respectful American they will realize you are on their side.
this is another thing that's entirely the point of this adm… excuse me… of the current regime's actions/policies. the Zarina of Doge & his handlers are forcing us to stay within our borders & buy/sell/trade with the same restrictions, while the rest of the globe shrinks back & stays away in horror.
I don’t blame them! I’m a tiny unthreatening blonde white girl born in America and Im minutes from the border to Canada and I’m afraid to go bc im scared of what will happen when I try to come home!
Undoubtedly, uneducated maga will say "good, we don't need them".
Too bad they can't think for themselves - if they did, then they would understand the economic impact.
Nah. It's still the white supremacy and racism that is important to MAGA. Trump uses things like tariffs to control, like he is using Musk to take the heat on the layoffs and Loomer to blame for firing NSC leaders. It's Mob Boss 101, control at any cost. But use others to do your dirty work.
yeah, nobody wants to get imprisoned on the whim of an over-caffeinated border agent, and held god-knows-where for god-knows-how-long, for god-knows-what-reason
Obviously the political situation is affecting international travel to US. But, the dollar is strong right now so it is extra expensive for international visitors. These factors are a one-two punch to international tourism.
I suspect that the declining surplus in travelers over 2024 is explained by the strength of the dollar vs. the actions of the administration in the past few weeks, which is causing the cliff.
I wouldn't be happy for my kids to even consider studying/year abroad in the US at the moment. I suspect numbers of overseas students are going to take a massive hit for the next academic year and beyond.
Or, it's when the stories about people being detained at the border, and shipped off to barbaric detention facilities hundreds of miles from the port of entry with nobody knowing where they are, started to break around the world?
Yeah that was the deal-breaker for me. Been to the US on a yearly basis for years, I've got family there. Also our state department has issued a travel advisory, which is pretty extraordinary. Last time I was there I had a nasty feeling it might be my last for a long, long time.
It’s shocking and outrageous. As an American all I can say is I support the EU and Canada. Don’t come here and fight back against the tariffs. Sadly, I think there will be a global recession. Donald Trump is completely insane.
Is the US a net exporter or importer of tourists overall? I expect you're right that the US will continue to lose inbound tourism drastically. Will US folks' choosing to vacation at home rather than abroad fill the gap?
No because mathematically it’s showing that the numbers of US passengers is not really changing. Especially as we head to a depression lol. The avg American does not travel compared to the avg foreigner traveling to America
I’d be curious to see how this looks after spring break ends. I’m guessing that a fair amt of US travelers is because they had trips planned for school breaks.
The plus side is that the waits at the theme parks aren't bad right now!
Went to SeaWorld, EPCOT, and DHS a couple of weeks ago and it felt like it was the off season.
🙄 Of course that's the only reasonable explanation.
It couldn't be that I live in Orlando, and have friends or family that work for Disney.
Or that I was able to get a great deal from SeaWorld for free annual admission for FL preschoolers and 25% off annual passes for FL residents.
Here's a breakdown of passengers processed -- US vs non-US in 10 major airports between 3/15 and 4/3 comparing 2024 vs 2025. Huge drop in international travelers coming here, no drop in Americans traveling overseas.
I have a feeling summer plans may have some unexpected, head in the sand, how could somebody do this to me changes. Staycations for the US, More Trump Inc winning.
Flew back home Wednesday to IAD on the 4:40 pm United flight from LHR, a flight I have taken many times. Less than 1/3rd full. Heathrow (Terminal 2) was similarly less busy than I have seen it since late Covid. My daughter's London
in-laws just cancelled their plans to travel to LA.
As much as I would like that, FIFA didn't move the World Cup out of Qatar despite the near slave labor used to build the facilities so I doubt they move it out of the USA
I transferred out of the American section of the business I work for last November, and despite offering a pay increase to anyone willing to take over my old role they still haven't managed to find anyone willing.
And I’ll make a prediction that outbound US travel to those international airports will also begin to drop as Trump effect of criminalizing dissent leads to more searches of for anti-Trump social media posts upon return to the States at Customs will become more frequent.
Immigration lawyers in Canada ARE recommending burner phones and leaving your main electronics at home. I still have a landline and have no sim card & can only dial 911 on our cell, but I almost think that having no real cellphone would ratchet up their suspicion. 🤷
Our government website has updated the info for travelling to the US. Warning that border patrol was probably going to be a lot harder on you and can detain you. Immigration lawyers are recommending using burner phones and leaving main electronics at home. I don't know who'd want to take a chance.
And this data from US ports of entry won’t capture the massive drop in traffic from Canada (which can be seen in airline stats), as CBP processes US-bound passengers from most Canadian airports through pre-clearance facilities there.
Also Ireland does pre clearance to US on the Irish side. Small numbers relative to Canada though, even though there's strong tourist links in both directions
They have pre-clearance in a handful of other places, too— Nassau, Bermuda, Aruba, Abu Dhabi. I imagine there are CBP stats on the flows through them? The Irish sites may see an increase in traffic as European travellers discover they offer a way to clear US immigration without risking detention!
I wouldn’t come to this shithole country either. Why, dtrump and Melvin Elon Leon took the fun out of our country. If they come they might just end up in a prison in El Salvador
America is doomed , even when Trump will be out of office if it ever happens, the Trust has been broken forever.
No one will ever trust USA anymore because they will all be afraid that it could happened again as it just did now.
Trump destroyed the trust toward America forever and it will be costly
Let's go to #Canada instead. Maybe a stop-over in #Greenland. But let's not forget to support the millions of courageos Americans that did not want this, and fight for #democracy in a fascist dictatorship.
Never in my life had I thought to encourage the US to be boycotted - externally / internally. Until we get the "clean-up on aisle 47" thing figured out, the US must be avoided. Until big business pays attention via falling business/stocks, we will not see change - that is a sad state of affairs...
Why would you want to have your phone confiscated and scrutinized, thrown in prison for no reason, and then deported just because you came here for a visit??
Ditto. Much as I have I enjoyed my various visits to the USA, no way am I spending my money there. Not until this administration goes and is replaced with one that is rational and has a degree of humanity and intelligence (doesn't need to be a lot, just more than this bunch of fools).
It's kinda a valid comparison to other authoritarian countries but there is a really nasty tendency to refuse to admit that this is all American homegrown fascism.
Unfortunately the $ losing value will be an incentive to visit the US at cheap price for people with little to no awareness about the situation. 🤬I know a few here in 🇨🇭
Purely anecdotal but my brother flew out of MCO on Friday…he said he hasn’t seen it this light since 1999! People definitely aren’t leaving so probably not coming in either.
The data looks decisive but just to make it really tight, we need a 2-year comparison as well to rule out the possibility that there was some unique unsustainable spike in inbound visitors in Jan-April 24.
As one minor quibble to what I just wrote, there IS something different between last year and this year: Easter is much later in the month, so that probably describes the truly drastic change we see so far, but I think we'll potentially see an even larger drop once Easter is finished.
The rest of the world had been experiencing an economic downturn, while the US was not. Plus, no one has been happy with the US political situation since last spring, not hard to imagine it chilled international arrivals during 2024, too.
Looking at just Seattle it seems additional delays for Non Citizens was not a factor in 2025 numbers - these seem even between Citizen and Noncitizen passengers. Flights are up in recent weeks relative to the first weeks of the Admin.
The cheapest airline tickets in Canada are the ones to the USA, completely undersold and empty aircraft heading to the fascist country that is America.
Derechito que ha ido al Readwise esta mañana! Fun fact: he declinado viajazo a San Francisco a gastos pagados porque yo y los USA en las aduanas no nos llevamos bien.
Given the seasonality of travel it’s not great to look at period to period data. A chart showing changes va year ago would be better. Although I still expect it to show the underlying point…visits by foreigners will decline
It would be interesting to see this year compared to the past few years. I'm assuming there's an annual pattern and that this year would show a striking difference from a normal year.
My guess is it reflects increased travel post COVID that was starting to level off. Not really a decline but just less of a steep year on year increase.
World Cup next summer will be interesting. While Mexico and Canada have record attendance, no one will come to the U.S. and we will have to attend and cheer like North Koreans.
Interesting that the trend was already on the slide but not surprising. I have friends in several countries that were afraid of coming to the US long before these lawless detentions began.
Seems like not so many foreigners want to roll the dice on getting jailed for weeks and deported due to the smallest or most inadvertent of immigration violations, eh?
Belgian here, I've visited the US at least 17 times (for work and holliday) but as long as there's even the tiniest chance that a visit can lead to me being shipped to a prison in El Salvador, I will not come back.
So CBP says they only allow you to download 3 years back, so Jan 2024 is comparing to Jan 2023 but I can't go back as far as Jan 2022 to include 2023. It's a shame since it looks like they've collected since 2008.
I'm in the UK. No longer interested in visiting the US and it's purely Trump and his behaviour. Don't trust your authorities to not act illegally or fairly to visitors. Happy to boycott the US for the foreseeable future. It's destroying the world order.
Your polite neighbours to the north are having none of this 51 state stuff. Many of us are boycotting travel, purchases etc. Many of those ‘missing’ passengers are us.
Chances are I would have done a trip to New Orleans in the summer and a winter cruise departing from Florida this year or early next. I'm going to Italy instead.
A friend flew from Toronto to Florida yesterday. There was 22 people total on the 737 including flight crew. Making America Great I see eh Shitzenpants!
But please be at least accepting of Americans like me travelling to Europe like my upcoming trip. We're spending time and money outside this flaming disaster.
Traveling Americans are usually not the problem. MAGAs are rarely world-savvy. At least for me, you are welcome. Not only for the money you bring, but for your interest in Europe.
I loved the USA and wish the land of the free all the best!
Thanks. I never thought I'd be trapped in an outcast hellacape despised by the free world.
If I were a European leader, I'd ban X, Star Link, slap 200 percent tariffs in Teslas and cherish your educational systems. Look what book burning here has brought us.
8 know they're many ugly Americans but good news is only half or less have passports. The really bad ones we can't have as neighbors mostly have never left the US or if they have on a gross cruise ship with 24 food troughs like cattle
Why that’s not gonna 47 policy do you believe if he said trust me it’s safe to come.So he doesn’t say anything that’s truthful or trustworthy so why would you buy that BS or support that BS?
I have recently pre-cleared at the Toronto airport. I've done that often for the past 20 years. There was no line at US immigration, I've never seen that before and was almost 2 hours early at the gate.
Yeah, for work reasons I needed to go to Atlanta and I was much afraid of what happens at the border so I changed my trip to go through Dublin instead and it was more or less empty. Instead of hours it took minutes to get through.
And traffic is significantly down at Canada US land border crossings. Choices being made by the Trump administration are driving choices being made elsewhere. That shouldn’t be a surprise.
Why would anyone even want to come to the US if it’s not forced on them by work or something? It’s simply not worth the risk. It’s not even worth the risk for citizens abroad coming home to visit, now that we know they’re harassing citizens as well (and unlawfully detaining them).
I'm abroad and not coming back anytime soon. If there's a family emergency, I will take my chances, but not a chance in hell for vacation visits, which is sad for my 9 year old who would love to see her grandparents and cousins.
News here yesterday stated that our various travel agencies report 25-50% less interest in travel to the USA this summer. Interest in Canada and destinations within Europe are up. Tourists are voting with their feet, and their toes are NOT pointing towards the USA.
What does Trump expect?
We’ve all seen the treatment you can get and anyway who has posted detrimental things about Trump may well be arrested and kicked out, why risk it?
There are many beautiful places on the planet…
Difficult choice to make between losing thousands on a wasted vacation vs being imprisoned for months in an ICE detention centre, sleeping under fluorescent lights, not allowed to shower, eating poor food.
Tip: if your cancelling/ cancelled US travel Google website of the member of Congress, mayor, chamber of commerce etc in destination area. Tell them details why, estimated $ spend, etc. That'll also have an impact.
The telling thing with so many chARTS FOR THE ECONOMY, SENTIMENT, UNCERTAINTY and things like this is how sudden and sharp the changes are. No building or progressions, just immediate sharp moves up or down.
There will be many seen and unforeseen impacts of our government’s draconian policies. High stakes trial and error is the worst approach to governance, and it will adversely affect everyone in one way or another.
i've visited the usa several times and love the landscape, but everything human is pretty much dismal & shallow. everything seemed to get worse, and then there was 2016, trump, and it felt like staring into an abyss of nothingness. i hope you all can turn it around, but until then, you won't see me
I have a colleague that has been invited to a wedding in Florida later this month(from Europe). He is seriously considering skipping it. And then you have the tourists that would not consider a vacation at all in the US. And a boycott of US goods is building up as well..
My next international flight plan: Drive to Canada, fly to Europe and Asia through Pearson Airport and back via the same plan. Fuck ‘em. I ain’t giving my hard earned dollars to these mutha-fuckers.
Just got back from Europe. Several locals mentioned wanting to visit the US someday. We told them, Don't come now!!!
They didn't even need to ask why. ☹️
None of my colleagues can visit the US safely at this stage, due to 1) belonging to some demographic or the other that is subject to targeted searches; and 2) protecting intellectual property on our devices. No more collabs. Sorry.
The only thing that surprises me in that chart is the strong downward trend over last year. Any idea why? (Not to downplay the more recent crash, I'm just curious.)
We're not coming! Why would we when we can be treated badly because we might disagree with Trump etc al. Is it true they're inspecting devices and demanding passwords to SM to check what is being posted?
Not without a warrant. IF anyone needs to travel in suggest turning off any facial ID access and going strictly password to unlock phones. can’t be forced to provide a password without a warrant. Of course you will also be turned around at the border, but meh, I dont really want to be here either!
I don’t think his supporters in FL thought he was gonna go after those with tourist visas. This is gonna hurt FL badly. Foreign tourists are not going to risk imprisonment to work at or visit Disney World.
Why would they come to a country that they despise? And we are pretty much hated world-wide now, so lose those superior attitudes - #47 has ruined our reputation in his first 100 days.
I’ve spent hundreds of thousands of $ US vacations over the years. CA, NY, FL, ARK, DC, NV, PA, you name it. Loved it, by all means possible! But now I will not. My profession is persecuted in the US, and I don’t trust that I and my family will be safe anymore. Hope to be back soon, in better times.
Thank you. I would do the same.
My family will not support US Red States or businesses run by billionaires.
I hope you come back when we get our shit together!
It’s not showing a decline in 2024. Everything above the line is an increase year over year. Those gains are smaller as the year goes on, but they are still gains.
That’s not how that works. Growth is growth. A slower rate of growth is not a decline in anyway, especially when we don’t have data for previous years to compare trends. That’s capitalism brain ruining data for generations.
No, the graph is showing change. If April 2023 is X, it shows April 2024 as roughly X+150K. Then it shows April 2025 as April 2024-150K, which brings us back to X.
The post I initially replied to was about the line in 2024, not 2025. Yes! 2025 shows a decline because we also have data on 2024 (and implicitly 2023). The downward trend of 2024 isn’t meaningful because it show raw number change. Are January and July comparable?

Oh wait, they can all go work at the new garment factory opening in a few years….🏭

What is going on?
People are SCARED.
It’s like travelling to Russia.
It’s come to a place where even if my work asked me to travel to the USA I would decline for my own personal safety
-150,000 travelers?
What is a negative traveler?
Too bad they can't think for themselves - if they did, then they would understand the economic impact.
Get it through your head.
People are SCARED.
It’s a repressive regime with no free speech and arbitrary detention and deportation to gulags.
People are SCARED.
Also angry at the CUNT Vance.
Punishment (tariffs on goods, detentions) will continue until morale (inbound tourism) improves!

What has to happen for 2028 to be any different?
As a European, I wouldn’t dream of travelling to Trumpistan.
I wouldn’t travel to Barbados or Jamaica if it meant a stopover in Miami.
If my employer ordered me to go to Los Angeles for a business meeting, all costs covered, I would refuse.
No one will ever trust USA anymore because they will all be afraid that it could happened again as it just did now.
Trump destroyed the trust toward America forever and it will be costly

Basically I’m wondering if there are any destinations that have had immunity. And Orlando is one of the only ones I can imagine. Maybe Vegas as well?
weekend 29 March - 1st April 2024?
Travel advisories do that.

I've been to the US twice last year, no current plan to return.

I'm surprised it's even still available.
I'm sure the douchebag doge's will get to it soon.

Sorry to all the fine folks there, but Florida governance needs shaking.
They didn't even need to ask why. ☹️
What we do think is that the country was fake all along.
The traditions, the constitution, the laws, the co equal branches, the checks and balances.
All an illusion. It was always an autocracy in disguise.
Now we know this, the relationship will always be different.
