Once those new rules are allowed to stand, they likely won’t go away; there’s little evidence in this type of “lawmaking” that doesn’t come with a struggle taking them off the books. It’s the price we pay keeping good rule & laws in place.

I suppose that since before the dawn of civilization humans have embellished our bodies in one way or other to attract mates or show superiority. We are, after all, part of the animal kingdom. Self-mutilation however is human. Yet many good reasons for cosmetic changes exist. Gender-affirming etc.

Exactly! Those reasons are a given. One person’s idea of beauty is another’s idea of what’s repulsive. Peoples all over the world have resorted to some very odd methods of cosmetic treatments, often with health detriments. Foot binding, neck stretching, lip plating & skin cutting are a few.
