My Labour MP tells me ..
"I understand your concerns about the current rules regarding political donations, and I recognise that there have been longstanding calls for change. I know that the Government is currently developing proposals to give effect to this, which will be published in due course."

I wonder how many Reform voters understand that such a move would allow them to be arrested and imprisoned without charge, just as Trump is doing in the US ?

A deal limited to defence, fishing and youth mobility does not fit my understanding of the term "very ambitious" !
Please do not go down the route of Trump superlatives where everything is the "greatest ever"!

I would rather wait until it is actually done before applauding it !

Why has his invitation not been withdrawn because of his threats towards Canada, a Commonwealth country. He can no longer be considered an ally!

Why exclude the press in the room, they are also complicit !

So all those votes for him on the basis of his promises, can be considered "sarcastic", and therefore invalid ?!

Don't react to the headline, read the whole article. Most of the assumptions seem probable, and the whole article is very thought provoking.

Thanks for this , really appreciated 👍

We can get deals with other markets when the EU negotiates them for all member states!
If we are a member then we have to make more of an effort to guide the "club", and not just sit back, as we have in the past, criticising France and Germany for seemingly running the show!

I cannot see us getting any closer to the EU without removing the red lines. The EU has so far refused to consider any "cherry picking". and without re-joining the Single Market and/or Customs Union that is exactly what the government are hoping to do !

I would have reversed those priorities !

Where can I find details of these ambitious plans that are not behind a paywall?

This has to be an economic decision, not an emotional one, and I would like to hear an explanation of how the UK taxpayers can benefit from this action. The notion that a single steel plant can supply a growing armaments industry is simply ridiculous.

The second problem is that they would not be able to cherry pick, as they want to do, and seem unwilling to compromise ( e.g. student visas).
comment in response to

IMHO, they are overestimating the opposition Reform and the Right Wing Media would incite, and the votes they might loose. The problem with this is that they are currently losing many who voted for them!!

I would like to think that this is a small element of a well thought out plan to increase our self sufficiency in defence !

It is not a public service as the railways, or water are.

Interesting to know if they believe they can make a profit from the business, and expand it, or if it will just become a money pit !!

Anyone involved in recommending companies to the VIP list during Covid should be refused such honours !

Yes, it seems our universities are now focussing on profit rather than educating the young in the UK !

However it seems as if they are making all of the preparations to do so! Digital services taxes ?

It seems that Labour are even adopting the Tory approach to the EU !
Inventing sticks to put between the wheels of recovery. Plus their apparent belief that public opinion is against better alignment.
Unbelievable !

I believe that a perfect solution would be to leave the HoC elected by the current "first past the post" system, and the HoL elected using proportional representation.
Best of both worlds !

Do you think that the Swiss have the same self-imposed red lines ?

Watching the US today, it seems to me that they are discarding any possibility that negotiations could end up with no deals in many instances. The fact that nations are wanting to negotiate does not mean they will give in to all of Trump's demands !

The US markets are down more than 2% overnight! Trump's insiders cashing in on their huge profits ?
comment in response to
post
IMHO the US market is not unfazed, it has lost 12% of it's value in the last 4 days. It is hoping that Trump will do a U-turn, or that negotiations will lead to lower tariffs than those announced by Trump. while trying to move it's focus to the long term, somehow ignoring the current volatility.

How is the government involved in this ? Is Comcast benefitting from a Special Enterprise Zone that is stopping us from re-joining the EU because of the subsidies?
comment in response to

This would be another problem for closer trading ties with the EU. When will they be able to do some "joined-up" thinking ?
comment in response to

You are correct, but these are self imposed barriers that could be removed instantly if the government changed its strategy !
There are no legal or commercial restraints.

I suspect that these are external contractors if they have been "recruited" at such speed! If so, they are expensive !

£5,000 + VAT to participate in a meeting with the Chancellor !
I would be interested to know where this money goes, The treasury ? or the Labour party? or Rachel's bank account?
comment in response to

The use of "Freeports" to produce growth will prevent any closer ties with the EU !! We must abandon that Tory policy, which Labour supported, in order to get some widespread and sustainable growth!

How long will it be before we will see the effects of the "turbocharging"?
Genuine "reciprocal tariffs" can be in place within days, and have an almost immediate effect, particularly as they should have already been doing all of the necessary analysis !

When Trump announced "Liberation Day", I hoped he was going to stand down ! No such luck !!

If it keeps going like this, they will soon not have enough funds to pay Trump's protection charges!

B) companies like Apple who decide to move production to the US will loose enormous amounts of money, and be under the control of Mafia Don Don : once the investment is made to build the production infrastructure, the prices of the articles will have to include labour costs at US rates.
comment in response to
post
Dumb Dunce Dom presents it as a win/win to the US voters. It only needs a moment's thought to realise what is happening :
A) US consumers will pay the tariffs, not the originating countries, increasing indirect taxation on them.

She must follow Elon Musk! He is among the many who believe it is based on a murder that actually took place after Adolescence was finished, and in which the perpetrator was a black youth !

I would refer you to a recent statement from a government minister who says they are not contemplating any move in that direction !!
Musk could also offer £1M prizes to people who sign a petition in support of a political party ?!

It would seem that we cannot get any closer ties with the EU, even on defence, without sorting out fishing rights !

Would we not get more growth by re-joining the EU than we would ever get from Freeports and SEZ ?

It should not be a "knee jerk" reaction, Starmer has had plenty of time to prepare !!
