The non-music work I have to do to be able to afford to do (even the most mundane aspects of) music.

Also nice that through this process I discovered that someone filmed & uploaded to YT™ this one-off solo drum machine (Boss DR-5, discovered through Jamal Moss' use of it, here flashed w/ insane patterns dumped via SYSEX out of Max) set I played at NEUMF '13: www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBcl...

Oh nice, still an amazing listen, although praise be to Jon Leidecker for the original tip! Discovered so many amazing things through his tutelage.

Yes the “Organic” ones are closer to $7, but the regular ones have been $4.19 forever; a friend said they’re $6 /18 at the Target around the corner, which is even cheaper but they can’t stock the shelves quick enough (which makes sense given the EGGPANIC).

Thanks Jake! This makes perfect sense as well. Does your main rb library live alongside your iT one? Space is at such a premium; it’s the eternal struggle between bringing everything on a 1TB thumbdrive vs. a 256GB - the latter will be snappier on the CDJ

This is all completely sensible, thanks for your insight! At showtime do you then drag the playlists to a further USB stick for the CDJ’s or do you bring the full library drive?

I highly recommend the Willisau 4tet set on HatArt if you’re just getting going; was my own entry-point & led to a lifelong love of his music/playing: www.discogs.com/release/1201...

(ashamed to say that I broke the tenet by finishing up a few commissions & a bit of rehearsing for the gig on Thursday over the weekend; so sorry to let everyone down)

Yep; I wonder when this will finally be available - it sounds very faithful to the original circuit! The implementation the Triglav folks in Hungary have done is very, very good; it’s a great option for DIY folks (the Mouser cart/BOM is ~$250) & ofc you also get the Ian Fritz Hypster in tandem.

I worry I come across as ungrateful (esp. to the people that have been on board for ages) but it’s important amidst all of the fearmongering & bad politics of streaming to show, also, that it simply does not work for many, even as something we’re programmed to tolerate in fear of “falling off”

Same argument for Patreon et. al I guess; I use the sub the way many use IG/YT, as a place to display progress in lieu of the kinds of chiseled & globally marketed album-statements that feel impossible at the moment.

Exactly; the data/math I’ve accumulated over the past year plainly shows that every 1 play (not even purchase, far far more scarce) on Bandcamp happens in the space of ~1500 streams on Spotify - it’s a hell of a disparity!

Exactly; I mean the sporadic $0.78 is nice, but I’ll gladly forego it in favor of a message on SLSK & the resultant conversation. I have time & energy for this, I imagine most artists do.

Feels like it reached critical mass ages ago; I’m essentially giving things away these days just to connect on there, groveling for the occasional $30 annual subscription. I see artists playing 500+ cap rooms here in NYC selling less than a dozen of their press-cycled albums on there, regularly.

@bandcamp.com is ofc completely fine; I’ve been enjoying it more recently as a sounding board for ideas-in-progress to an “elite” audience of the super-engaged, but certainly a thimbleful in the ocean of potential.

At this zero-sum stage: if it’s all sensible resources-wise I recommend physical for the intrepid souls who partake, and the SoulSeek/.torrent nexus for everyone else (which has been thriving) where there are no fees or excisions or “revenue shares” etc. Just raw audio/meta/pixel-data.

The number of messages I received after it all came down (the very next day after I chose to cancel & have the auto-bill refunded; funny how propagation took weeks, months) shows that people were listening, everywhere. I used to think of all of this as radio, but it’s closer to collecting for many.
