flowed out. Every writing encounter is different. After pulling three random words, this one just flowed. It was like an encouraging whisper, murmuring “You see, it’s not so hard.” Read "Like Mist" at flingingfiction.substack.com/p/like-mist #microfiction #insideout #contempt #mist #flingingfiction

The world is spinning off its access, and this project that has been years in the making is spinning into focus. What a whirlwind we’re living in. @epicreads.bsky.social

Goodreads is giving away ten galleys of Tempest. Warning: If you enter the giveaway, don’t read the reviews. It's all spoilers—and details about plot points that pissed them off, lol. Passionate readers for the win! @epicreads.bsky.social #galleygiveaway #tempest #ya #goodreadsgiveaway

Such a treat to see When the World Turned Upside Down anchoring a list of Scholastic books about belonging. Celebrating identity is my passion. I believe our uniqueness is what makes our world go round! Book list & activity guide here: www.scholastic.com/teachers/tea... #identity #belonging #kidlit

“A small arthouse cinema on Miami Beach faces the possible cancellation of its lease + the loss of $80K in grant $ promised by the city after refusing to cancel screenings of the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land (about 🇮🇱’s displacement of 🇵🇸) following rptd intimidation attempts by the mayor.”

Flinging Fiction is where I play with microfiction. The rules are: 1. No obsessing over craft, 2. No editing to "perfection", 3. Focus on surrender, 4. Follow the words to wherever they want to go. The latest: flingingfiction.substack.com/publish/post.... #microfiction #fun #creativity #writing

Hearing that my words made young people feel seen makes ME feel seen. I love that children recognize themselves and their identities in my book. Whether we are similar or dissimilar to each other, may we see the beauty in each other and celebrate it wildly. May we reflect the best in each other. ❤️

@ibizoboi.bsky.social reminds me that it’s been 25 years. 25 years of talking and learning, growing and writing. It was wonderful to participate in her book launch for her fantastic new novel in verse (S)kin @greenlightbklyn.bsky.social. Good luck on your tour, Ibi. May the book soar. —K.

I've always been good at giving myself grace—within reason. When things don’t go to plan, I become anxious and disappointed in myself. I’m learning to trust myself and life. My plans are my guide, not my master. With grace, I clear the space for self-love, nourishment, and the energy to go on.

How fun is it to see what you made become real! Dear Tempest, we have travelled many miles together. Now it’s time for you to stretch your wings and fly! Reminder: Barnes&Noble Premium and Rewards Members can get a 25% discount—code: PREORDER25. Sale ends today. @epicreads.bsky.social

NJ Gov. Phil Murphy did a big thing: He used the clemency power to free 3 incarcerated survivors of domestic violence; they'd been locked up for crimes against their attackers. Now there's a push in other states to rethink the treatment of incarcerated abuse survivors. boltsmag.org/new-jersey-c...

So excited to be in conversation with Ibi Zoboi on February 12 about her new book Skin. The writing journey is a wild ride so it’s amazing to have community for guidance and commiseration. Ibi keeps it real. And she has never failed to be supportive. I am looking forward to our conversation.

I am grateful to those who couldn’t and sent encouragement, and those who could and answered the call. Community is everything and I am blessed to receive the support of writers who have walked this path. Peace be upon their houses, harmony be within their community, and power be within their pens.

The book was an uphill journey, the announcement and book release were delayed, but we are here now, within sniffing distance of release. Whew. Veronique is ready to spread her wings. I hope you are ready to receive her. June 2025 #newreleasse #ya #elementalpowers #teenromance #familysecrets

Yep. As has become annual tradition, I highlight 10(+ more) excellent African SFF short fiction stories that really stood out to me in 2024. Some brilliant, timely stories for you to check out and consider as we wind up to the next cycle of awards season. Check it! ✨ reactormag.com/the-best-afr...

Ouch. I am both Frog and Toad. I developed a deeper need for solitude in the past few years. Sometimes to wallow in darkness and some times to revel in and celebrate myself. And for the friends I love deeply, I am Toad when they want to be alone. How could they not want to be around ME?

Play is essential to the creative soul. Flinging Fiction is the space where I practice creative surrender. The latest is piece is out. Feel free to give it a read. And feel free to interpret this as your sign to offer creativity a little surrender today. flingingfiction.substack.com/p/the-blood-...

Definitely have some ARCs and some author copies of When the World Turned Upside Down that I can donate.

1/ It's that time of year -- if you're book shopping, feel free to poach from my list of favorite books I've read this year. Bear in mind, these aren't necessarily 2024 books, but the books I've read in 2024. These are my faves, grouped by category, but in no particular order: (list to follow):

This week, I received my contributor’s copy of The Black Fantastic anthology. The featured story is a bit of a shapeshifter. The version in The Black Fantastic (reprinted from When the World Wounds) features a "he." The version in Sycorax's Daughters features a "she." One story, two pronouns.

These teenagers and young men — 95% of whom are Black, Latinx, or Filipino — earn between $2.20 and $4 per hour, plus an additional $1 an hour when they’re actively fighting fires, according to the DJJ. ⤵️

And that's how adjacent motivation works. Cautionary tales can be a public service. Whew.

Since reaching half a hundred, I’ve been marveling at how much of my evolution is a deepening into what’s been there all along. In the ripeness of middle age, I’m making space for a new identity that’s been here all along. Working on embracing all my selves. meetingmyself.substack.com/p/healer

Complete with teaching guide, this anthology explores human relationships, space, time, futures, and nature through speculative writing in all genres. On sale right now for half off✨✨

Breaking News: A Wisconsin judge struck down parts of a law that stripped government workers in the state of collective bargaining rights and set off protests.

New microfiction: "The Rattle. The Break." Thank you to the random word generator that gave me the word “rattle.” Just getting that first word gave me the opening to tumble into a conversation with a tree. I hope it speaks to someone’s soul. flingingfiction.substack.com/p/the-rattle....

It’s wild how often writing feels like a trust fall. At every stage, there are moments that you wonder am I onto something, or am I courting disaster? That’s why—alongside our development of voice, vision, craft—we must develop a profound comfort with uncertainty. In the midst, all we have is faith.

Self-reflection is the life blood of continuing on. My current newsletter reflects on the author pass of Tempest, how microfiction helped me start drafting my next novel, and community support. Here’s hoping that this share supports you just as others’ journeys support me mailchi.mp/9abe2ab32160...

There’s been so many times that I thought I was looking at the last draft of this novel. Now that it’s copy edited and typeset, I’m starting to believe that this author pass really is the last draft. Just 70 more pages to go. #ya #tempest #summer2025

"Part of the legend of Lorraine O’Grady is that she was already in her mid-40s when she made the decision to devote herself to art. After graduating from Wellesley with a degree in economics, she worked as an intelligence officer in the State Department, a rock critic, a translator, and a teacher."

Playing with microfiction has been a true pleasure—exploration with no destination and no deadline. If you like speculative and brief, check out Folding Filth Until I'm Free (which ironically feels like what I'm doing with my life right now. Lol.) flingingfiction.substack.com/p/folding-fi...

The poetic line about the “forethought of grief” has been a great guide for me. But in this moment of grief that isn’t so easily processed, we are reminded to feel the grief and not bypass it. Today, another line has became a guide: I feel above me the day-blind stars / waiting with their light

I've had an off-kilter relationship with my creative flow that's lingered for two decades. After clawing my way back from the most dark, desperate times, I am diving into microfiction as a pathway back writing that prioritizes curiosity over productivity. flingingfiction.substack.com/p/an-elastic...
