Open corruption of state and federal funds has been the norm in the FL GOP since at least 2010. The legislature was the most active back then but that’s only because Scott was already wealthy.

They continue to violate a court order to retrieve someone they illegally deported. We’re now well beyond a constitutional crisis. If they’re allowed to do this, their secret police can sweep up anyone, for any reason, deport them & refuse to bring them back. That would be the end of democracy.

Given their trolly nature I swear some group in the White House has a King George / Declaration of Independence bingo card they are trying to complete.

APOLLO: “.. Consumer Confidence Is Weaker than During the 2008 Financial Crisis .. “.. sentiment is declining rapidly both for households making more than $100,000 and less than $100,000 .. “.. Consumers’ worries about losing their jobs are at levels normally seen during recessions ..”

Serious point: This might be the most interventionist American government in my lifetime. The price of just about every good reflects the good thinking of the Commissars in Washington DC implementing their 5-year plan for National Greatness, rather than market forces.

In fairness 25% of people wanting to work in a factory is a lot of people. Which is a lot of people. I doubt it but still.

This also drives me crazy about the US higher ed sector. Foreign students bring $40b a year into the us from their home countries — compare that to $25b in grain exports or $20b in iron and steel.

A helpful guide to the current state of US trade policy:

After reading this ... good luck convincing people to give their data to the government again. State capacity is not just ruined by firing people and eliminating programs but by reducing trust.

74% of EU citizens think that their country benefits from EU membership. And for a number of years every single UK poll has shown a majority now want to return to the EU #RejoinEU www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/pres...

This will be the first time since we started counting that the United States will not have a travel trade surplus.

Depressing yes, but also very funny in light of the admin’s goal to reduce the US current account deficit

NEW 🧵 The number of people travelling from Europe to the US in recent weeks has plummeted by as much as 35%, as travellers have cancelled plans in response to Trump’s policies and rhetoric, and horror stories from the border. Story: www.ft.com/content/6dc1...

This is literally something they could do for themselves. Ironically it's one of the few thing that DOGE and the FL version could do with couple decent programmers and some interns. It's also chilling and if I was faculty I would quit as soon as possible.

This is the right mov, it hit the US where they have a surplus and accomplishes existing goals of many in the EU.

Seems the President is not only trying to kill tourism but specifically targeting Florida tourism with attacks on Canada & Europe and now this.

While appreciate the sentiment there is no way this so true. Employers in the UK don’t need to give you any sick days or pay you while you are out sick. Therefore people absolutely have gone bankrupt in the UK due to illness related work loss.

I'm as big a USA booster as you'll find. But why would people from anyplace else *risk* coming to the US right now? What if Customs/Border people at the airport find something about you they don't like? Good luck to US travel/tourism industry h/t @beijingpalmer.bsky.social @swiftonsecurity.com

Voting with your feet and revealed preferences in moving is something that gets a lot more complicated when you look at actual patterns. Also, if the way Americans move reveal any preferences it’s they like where they live like about 5 times more than they used to.

At the same time. after living Europe, Americans are generally wealthier than I ever realized. Yes even MS. But it displays is different: like grocery store variety & huge cars. The thread is of course correct but American are richer than they realize, even if their quality of life can be lower.

If it weren't for the tariffs, this would be one of the biggest stories right now.

Imagine not realizing who looks bad in this scenario

I have a nitpick about the bond vigilantes claim — it was systemic stress/deleveraging that happened to wreak havoc in global bond markets this week that forced the issue, not some discretionary fundamental repricing of government long bonds.

I am little less convinced — I think people will say they got theirs because Trump et al are smart and they are all crooks — but if Democrats want to say this they need to make a pact to stop trading stocks even before they pass a law.

Depressing. 1) it’s only that low because some amount of hostility is seen as unavoidable. 2) I get why it’s written this way, but the dryness one reason academia is hard for people to engage with.
